A Man Called Ove. Have you seen it yet? I must confess, I started to watch this movie not once, but twice and turned if off both times about 3 minutes into the movie because it’s in Swedish and there are subtitles. 😉 I normally work on rug hooking projects when I watch movies so I just couldn’t hack just sitting there with nothing in my hands. I know, I’m weird, right?
But after the post about my neighbor at the first house we built my friend Jennifer kept telling me I REALLY needed to watch the movie. Like REALLY REALLY needed to watch it. {My guess is she thinks Ove and I have a lot in common!} Anyway, I finally watched the movie, and you know what? It was AWESOME. And if you haven’t seen it yet you totally need to watch it too. 😉
If you are an Amazon Prime Member it’s available right now for free.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it.
Peace out Girl Scouts & have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

I loved it! It’s really heart warming. I didn’t even notice the subtitles after a while but you will have to read the screen. I am unable to crochet when I am watching a show with subtitles.

I didn’t see the movie, but read the book through Audible. Out of 30 books I “read” last year, it was one of my absolute favorites! If the movie is half as good as the book, definitely worth watching!
I enjoy your posts Mavis!
Linda says
I read the book and I loved it. I should see the movie.
Christine Nutterfield says
The book is on our bookclub list! I hear Tom Hanks is producing (acting in ?) the Hollywood version of this movie.
Lisa says
LOVED it. No clue why they need to remake it.
Mavis Butterfield says
I know, right? If they do, I am not going to watch it.

A movie? I need to see it! I loved the book and made my husband listen to it. (They have so much in common) Now I just need to find someone with Amazon prime…

I just saw this movie at our local library about 6 weeks ago. The subtitles didn’t bother me one bit! I loved it.

Oh yay! I’m glad you liked it! Did you feel like you and Ove were kindred spirits?!
Mavis Butterfield says
Absolutely. Ove and I would have a morning cuppa before going on rounds together. But the Saab thing…. Volvo’s are way better so he’d have to get over that. 😉

We haven’t seen the movie, but hubby and I both read the book and it reminds me of my husband. LOL. He loved it. We’d still like to watch it, but, like you, those subtitles are a little off-putting! 🙂

I read the book first. It was hysterical! Also my family is Swedish so got a kick out of some cultural jokes in the book. Of course, the movie is not the book…but I was disappointed as how much was left out of the movie.
So…READ THE BOOK to get more of the story.

I loved this movie. I loved the book even more.

The book was good, I enjoyed it.
Defrosting trays work because metal conducts hot/cold so much better than countertop for example. I defrost by putting foil-wrapped frozen meat in the stainless steel sink. Foil directly touching the metal. You can also use a large aluminum or iron pot or skillet. The mass of the metal will determine how much cold will transfer, more mass = better. Once the metal becomes cold, switch to another room-temp pot and repeat. You don’t need to buy a special piece of metal.

I read the book a while ago, and watched the movie more recently. I enjoyed both, although the little movie that was playing in my head while I read was much different than the actual movie (sometimes I don’t like the movie for this very reason…it doesn’t match up with the vision I had). I also read all of Fredrik Backman’s other books this fall…I enjoyed Beartown (I think you had it on your “looks interesting” book lists a while ago).
Lynda says
I agree with Patty P^^ about the movie and book.
I also read all his other books and liked them too.
Becky says
Book was amazing.
I have tried the movie several times too, but I don’t want to read subtitles. I like to multitask when watching movies.

I’m the same way as far as “watching” movies. I always have a knit or crochet project going and prefer to mostly listen and have my husband tell me if I really need to see something. He’s quite patient about rewinding, if necessary!
AlysonRR says
I rarely watch films with subtitles because I enjoy multitasking. Usually I’ll have windows open in my browser and a book open on the kindle app on my phone while watching a video…
Lissa says
Either read the book or listen to it. Please! The book gives much more background and nuance to Ove. There is also so much more minutiae– the little details that you thrive on. YOU WILL LOVE THE BOOK.
Dayna says
I couldn’t get through the book. What am I missing? It was boring, blah…not my cuppa tea at all.

So glad this was recommended as I’d not heard of it. I thoroughly enjoyed it from many perspectives (despite the subtitles 🙂 May have to check out the book now. Thank you Jennifer and Mavis!
