My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
I just checked the forecast for this coming week and with the exception of one day, the temps will be in the lower 70’s to upper 60’s. And of course you know what that means, right? Black long sleeved tees and a zip up puffy coat in the mornings…. Weeeeeee. I love this time of year and I am looking forward going to bed earlier and to spending a little more time with the puggle princess snuggled up on the couch.
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
Currently harvesting:
- Tomatoes, Tomatoes Tomatoes
- Eggplant
- Zucchini
- Peppers
- Blueberries
- Sunflowers, Herbs and I should probably check on the carrots
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one for this year.}
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
This summer hasn’t gone as exactly {or even remotely} close to how I had planned it to work out. Back during the depths of winter when I sat down and mapped out my goals in December of 2018, I truly thought I’d have oodles of time to dedicate to growing vegetables this summer.
But life has a way of throwing you for a loop sometimes, and my attention has been needed elsewhere this summer and keeping an eye on succession planting, dealing with Mr. Peter Rabbit stealing vegetables straight out of the garden and carving out the time needed to set out the vegetable stand each morning and taking everything back in each night hasn’t been at the top of my list lately.
I’m trying not to beat myself up about it, but not reaching an intended goal is still disappointing.
But hey, there’s always next year, right?
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.
I finally had to put the pumpkin runner I was working on aside and get to work on 2 promised special orders {a cat pillow and a turkey rug} so there will be no new treasures for the Etsy shop this week.
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 37}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 133, now down to 51}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones} DONE!
So far this year I’ve added 12 new rug hooking patterns and 13 beginner rug hooking kits to my Etsy shop.

- Tullia and Thomas Turkey
- Double Nantucket Whale Runner
- Miss Henny and Penny

- Fat Brown Hen
- Busy Little Bee
- Queen Bee

- Small Nantucket Whale

- Sunflowers
- A Basket of Spring Posies
- Fat Brown Hen
- Chicky’s Garden
Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next Winter
So far we have 3 1/2 cords for this winter. I say we need more. The HH disagrees. But what do I know.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone
Because of the babies turtles hatching, I didn’t make a dent in my photo purge this week. This photo of me and Lucy standing on a bed of cherry blossoms though…. I just can’t part with it.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
Maybe if I just ate a few more muffins it would round things out a bit and then loosing Muffy wouldn’t matter.
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
Well, after waiting 71 days the turtle babies to finally hatch {we ended up with 8 turtles, that we know of} I suppose I can’t stall any longer and I’m going to have to find a 5K and a half marathon to walk so I can knock this goal off my list.
We kept Lucy inside during the hatching process and kept her away from the general area the next day but now there’s no excuse to get out there and get those races done.
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books {16 down, 10 to go}
I have An American Princess: The Many Lives of Allene Tew on my nightstand, Mr. Sunday’s Soups on my kitchen counter, On Writing and Mistress of the Ritz ready to listen to on audiobook. If anyone out there knows how to stop time for 72 hours, please let me know. I need to catch up on my sleep, get some serious hooking time in and read a few books.

- Marilla of Green Gables #1 Still my favorite
- The Great Alone #2
- The Aviator’s Wife #3

23 down, 31 recipes to go. The HH has promised to make eggplant Parmesan today. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
9 down, 44 to go. I’ll get crackin’ once fall {and cooler temps} come around.

- 7 jars Peach Jam
- 7 jars of Strawberry Jam
- 15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
- 15 jars of Spiced Pear Jam
- 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
I wasn’t able to find anything good this week, but I did score a new Kenny G Christmas CD. 😉 There were about 5 things I would have liked to have dragged home from the recycle center but Mr. Debbie Downer was there with me and gave me the eye no second hand treats for me this week.
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
Coffee table for the family roomConsole, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.Long rectangular table for the craft room.- Table for the formal dining room.
- 2 wing back chairs for the family room.
I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping roomas well as put up some sort of decoration above the other321 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {26 down, 28 to go}
Last week we celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I guess the highlight was that we didn’t spend it at The Cracker Barrel.
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education Class Done {I’ve taken 3!}
- I’m keeping the first class I took with my neighbor top secret for now
- Spoon Carving Class with Heather.

Goal #19 — Secret {for now} Holiday Project
The big reveal… Friday, September 13th, 2019.
Goal #20 — Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
4 down, 8 to go. {I’ve decided to wait and work on this goal during the fall/winter months} and honestly at this rate, it will be a party platter palooza this fall.

Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
And last but not least, the sunflower has been hung on the front door. I widened the center like many of you suggested {but didn’t bedazzle the center because it wouldn’t have been seen from the road}. I don’t know though…. I think the tin star looks better on the door. What do you think?
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
- Late January : Valentine Heart
- Late February : Shamrock
- Late March : Giant Carrot
- May: White wave petunia hanging basket
- June/July: Tin Star and Flag Bunting
- August : Sunflower

How about YOU? What are your goals for 2019? If you told us about them HERE, check in! We want to know how you are doing. Because seriously, it’s so much easier to get those goals checked off your list when you have people rooting for you! 🙂
Have a great Sunday everyone, I’m headed back to bed.

I love the sunflower! I think the issue might be the yellow and white don’t have a lot of contrast, so it would stand out more against a darker- colored door.
Gale says
Since you are a “turtle mama”, why not a turtle on the front door. No one else will have one of those.
Robin in WI says
How about an acorn for your next door bling? 🙂 With or without an oak leaf or two.
chickengrandma says
I love sunflowers period. Maybe add a green stem and leaf. My goals …haha. Fractured my ankle end of July and spent 4 weeks on the couch. Now walking a bit but get very tired quickly. This recovery is taking a long time. My list of goals—no hope of finishing most. I did get some work done on Christmas craft sale items.
Caitlin says
I feel like the sunflower needs a bit more depth. Maybe a big old leaf tucked behind the sunflower, so it has a bit more going on, as well as physical depth. (and that would be quick to bang out!)
I put on socks and a sweater this morning, in central vt, and it is justlovely!
Christa H. says
Maybe type up a little survey of things you could offer at your stand and put that and some pencils out there to see what people are interested in buying from you.
Rebecca in MD says
Well, I am confessing that I have not done very well with my list of goals thus far, other than my travel goals which I completed. I LOVED the trip to Ireland and the week at the beach with my grandsons.
Perhaps I can still knock a few things off my list…………
Mavis, your accomplishments are amazing!
LaToya says
My goals are in a state of disarray. Because, you know, life happens. But like you said – there’s always next year. Though with 4 months left in the year I do have more than a couple that are still achievable.
I was delighted to read your story about the turtles coming. That may be one of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of things that most people will never get to experience; super cool.
I’m on the fence about the sunflower. I do like that it adds some brightness and it stands out. But it needs something else because it almost looks more like a sun to me. But hey, it’s a sunflower door decoration, and that’s all it needs to be. I have some hanging baskets on the front of my porch with dead flowers for the last 4 months. So I’m in no position to judge – LOL
Congrats on 25 years!!; we’re 2 years behind you.
Did you get corn for your anniversary?
Mavis Butterfield says
I had to move the hanging basket to the side of the house because I kept forgetting to water it when it was at the front door. 😉 Maybe that’s the trick. And I too think the turtles hatching in the driveway was a once in a lifetime opportunity too. I so wanted to keep them.
The corn comment. Priceless.
Helen in Meridian says
Or something from Fred Meyers? Where’d you Go Bernadette movie opened 2 weeks ago.I got a Josh Groban Xmas CD at the thrift store this week. I remember driving to Salem, OR to catch a Kenny G concert.
Teri says
Love the sunflower but miss the hanging basket.
You are amazing with what you accomplish.
Linda says
I think the sunflower looks great Mavis, and hey, do you know of anyone else that has a one-of-a-kind sunflower on their front door.
Vicki in Birmingham says
Where are all your readers with their goals? Hmmmm. This should clue you in on me and mine, What’s a goal?!
Mel says
My original sewing goals didn’t pan out for a number of reasons (I might still get to one or two, but we’ll see), so I switched to mini weekly goals. I got those done every week this summer, but I’m taking a break until the school year is under way. Perhaps I should just count getting settled into the school year as a goal.
E in Upstate NY says
Health issues continue to haunt me. No energy, get bone tired doing very little. Have to schedule my trip up the stairs so I only do it once a day. That said, traveled to son’s house in Maine for a visit. Together we made 112 containers of Maine Blueberry Jam for wedding favors. He’s getting married at the end of September. Took a long afternoon. Brought a stool with me so I could sit at the stove stirring. For me, that was a major check on my to-do list.
Signed a contract to sell my house, now the clearing out of said house. Have to have the kitchen and back porch broom clean (water turned off) for the closing sometime this week. Because of being ill and the wedding, the house will get 100% turned over Nov 1. So I do have some time…
Life sure gets in the way of expectations.
