Local Bakery/Eatery $14.23
Crab cakes, biscotti and Boylan soda {their Shirley Temple is my favorite, but really hard to find for some strange reason}. I’m not really a soda drinker, mainly because I don’t like the way it tastes and it leaves a weird nails on the chalkboard feeling in my mouth. And then of course there’s all that caffeine.
BUT, I do like to drink a real old fashioned soda with real sugar in it about twice a year. Grape soda, root beer or a Shirley Temple are usually my go to choices, but this time around I went for black cherry, and it was really good. It still doesn’t beat a Shirley Temple or a grape soda though.
Mother’s Day Treats $13.50
Seriously. Does it get any better than a pear tart and a lemon meringue tart? No, no it does not. Pastries, they are the breakfast of champions.
$6.56 Milk and Ice Cream.
Now that’s my kind of shopping. 😉
$11.07 Milk and Bread
Same window different day.
Because you can never have enough bread. 🙂
Have you tried making the no knead dutch oven crusty bread or the No Knead Sun-Dried Tomato, Olive and Feta Bread I posted on the blog like 10 million years ago? YOU NEED TO GIVE IT A GO! This time around I subbed Parmesan for feta and omitted the olives because I didn’t want to use any of the HH’s fancy olives. I also added a couple of shakes of red pepper flakes and the bread turned out WONDERFUL. It’s so good toasted and topped with butter or cream cheese.
Salads and pickety bits. Ham, with a toothpick. F A N C Y.
All I do is eat, sleep, garden and work in the basement on craft projects these days.
I might have to book a trip to Scotland when this is all over. Anyone want to explore Shetland with me? Not much is going on downtown on the CCTV, but the Shetland blog is a pretty good read.
Monday, let’s do this. Tomorrow, I’ll post the new pantry pics. 🙂
Peace Out Girl Scouts.

Looking for ways to save on your grocery budget? Back when the kids were in school, I used to cook loads of freezer meals in bulk, and preserved as much food as possible from my vegetable garden. I have written about the list of pantry staples I always have on hand and The Best Foods for Eating Well on a Tight Budget. I’ve also written about How to Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half and even did a series on 52 Ways to Save $100 a Month.

Scotland? Absolutely. I’m dying to go across the pond again.

Have you read any of Ann Cleeves mysteries? Her Jimmy Perez series takes place in Shetland. The audiobooks are great because of the Scottish accent of the reader.

Have you ever made your own soda? It’s really easy and potentially less nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling. I occasionally drink real soda for headaches, but for actual drinking I prefer homemade ginger ale. I still don’t drink it that often, but you can freeze the syrup and add it to tonic water.
Mavis Butterfield says
The kids made root beer when they were younger, but we wouldn’t drink enough to make the effort worth it. I think it’s interesting that you drink real soda for headaches.
Mel says
Yes, I freeze the syrup so I can just make a glass or two at a time. Otherwise it’s hard to finish it. And it depends on the headache, but sometimes the pure sugar/caffeine of real soda does the trick. Caffeine is an active ingredient in a lot of painkillers, so it makes sense I guess. I do get sinus headaches any time the air pressure drops because I have a rare sinus deformity, and nothing works on those headaches.
Rosaleen says
Some of the headaches I’ve had that just didn’t respond to NSAIDs, even prescriptions, have been conquered by adding coffee and chocolate. It wasn’t the sugar for me.

Hi, Mavis-
If ever I am comfortable with flying again, YES, I would be interested in exploring Scotland with you! You may have to set this up as a drawing, so many of us will be interested. We finally planned that trip to Ireland for which I asked you and your readers give input. Unfortunately, Covid 19 put the kibosh on our trip, scheduled for last month (April 2020. I figure most of the places we wanted to visit will still be there when we can go.

Everything is so pretty! Nothing of what I make is very pretty, haha, but it tastes good, so I can live with that. 😉

If you ever find the Boylan Creamy Red Birch you need to try it. It’s my favorite! It’s similar to root beer but so smooth!
Linda Sand says
I rarely eat sweet treats but that Pepperidge Farm cinnamon raisin swirl is GOOD!
Marcia says
That bread with sun dried tomatoes looks so good. I make have to try it. I don’t eat wheat anymore, but still bake bread for the husband and kiddos.
I would love to visit Shetland because I used to watch that show…

I’m one of the few guys (okay, maybe people :)) that actually loves the Brussels sprouts. I see you guys cook them often, good stuff. You should put a few ideas on how you prepare them up. I hope you guys are doing well!
Debra says
One way of cooking Brussels Sprouts for me is a light boil. Drain, add butter and 1/4 tsp nutmeg. Melt butter on Brussels sprouts and mix in nutmeg. You may add or use less nutmeg according to your taste.
E in Upstate NY says
Scotland, particularly the way north for wool, yarn and knitting, is on my bucket list that like above reader Rosaleen was killed by COVID-19. And next fall should find me in the hospital for a long “visit” and afterwards will have to keep to myself for at least a year. So perhaps in two years I will be healthy enough for traveling across the pond.
Rosaleen says
Hey, I’m not dead! My plan maybe was killed off for now, but I’m OK. 😉 Sounds as if you have some serious health things going on. Wishing you the best of luck, E. Two years may be about when the world is safe for travel again, especially if the researchers are successful in developing an vaccine.

Our family loves the no knead oven crusty bread. So delicious and so easy to make. I highly recommend everyone tries it….. you won’t be disappointed.
