On Saturday, the HH and I hopped in the car and went for a nice long drive to check out a pie stand in the town of Newry, Maine thanks to a comment left by One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Linda. Newry, Maine is a small town with a population of just over 350 people people and it was a wonderful and scenic drive.
A pie stand alongside the road? Seriously, how cool is that?
I counted not one, not two but 25 pies {!!!} out for sale at the stand when we arrived around 10 am. When we pulled into the parking lot, we were the only car there. By the time we left, 4 other cars had pulled into the parking area.
I was pleasantly surprised. Apple, blueberry and strawberry were just a few of the pies that were being offered on the day we were there.
As I was looking around the stand, I noticed a big jar of cookies. Not knowing what they were {I totally missed the sign that was right in front of them}, I grabbed two of the cookies and then proceeded to pick out a pie.
They even had whoopie pies!
And homemade jams.
The pies were moderately priced at $12.00 each. Which my husband thought was a steal considering the last I made him take me to get a pie I paid $25.
I love that I live in a place where the honor system is still king and people trust you to do the right thing.
Maple cream filled cookies. OH MY WORD!!! I should have bought a dozen. It was by far the best cookie I have had in the last 5 years. Seriously, they were that good. {And now I am on the hunt for a good maple cream filled cookie recipe}.
And the pie? Delicious.
Selling pies alongside the road. Who knew it was a thing? Maine. It just keeps getting better and better. 🙂
Have a wonderful day everyone, enjoy the sunshine.

*Swoon* I couldn’t love this pie stand any more! It’s like something I’d see in a happy dream. So adorable, and my gosh, that inventory!
Sue says
Gosh, I think I would have been tempted to buy one each of the pies as they all looked so good and the price for the home made pies is really good too. Yum!
Brianna says
So cute and nicely displayed. Ants, wasps, birds, and wildlife must not be a problem. I love it!
Laura says
Wow, they all looked so good. I really don’t know how you decided on one.

Oh my goodness. So many choices would have made for a hard decision. All of those baked goods look delicious.
During my trip to Maine a few years back, while driving between Portland and Bar Harbor, we came across a pottery shop that used the honor system as well. She had a sign with instructions. Blew me away. We looked around, decided on our purchases and left the money. Right as we leaving, the owner came in. She was returning from running errands, and rather than close up shop, she just employed the honor system. Gave me such good feels (and I love the pottery I bought there)!

The pies aren’t wrapped? How are they not full of ants?!
Mavis Butterfield says
All the pies were wrapped. Not a bug in sight. I think they go pretty quick and the stand is restocked throughout the day {it really is that busy}.
Andrea says
Now I have added the pie stand to my “to do” list for the summer!
Looks amazing

I have a Mennonite family that lives 1 1/2 miles up the road from me. On Wednesdays she has fresh homemade bread and cookies and any extra produce for sale, On Fridays it’s homemade cinnamon, maple walnut and carmel rolls and then extra produce. The maple nut are my favorite. She starts soon and goes until the end of October. I can’t wait for her to open.
Tracy says
Carmel rolls?? :::::lip quivers:::::

Please make your next giveaway be one of those pies!!! Or a trip to Newry.

You went?! Yahoo!!! So glad you liked it! I discovered this pie stand while my daughter was hiking the Appalachian Trail. If you know anything about thru hikers you know they can eat literally thousands of calories in one sitting. Suffice to say they made some money off of us, lol! Would love to go back someday, but as we live in Oregon it is not exactly a day trip. I will live vicariously through your adventures through Maine.
PS – You need to add Quoddy Head State Park to your must visit list!

I just love your blog! So homey and comforting…thank you for sharing.
There is an awesome show on one of the improvement channels, Maine Cabin Masters. Not sure if you have seen it but it really depicts how thrifty and crafty Mainers are. The gang fixes up old cabins for the owners in a set amount of time with a set amount of money. The gang works hard but have fun doing their job and some of them have some really neat accents.
Thank you again for sharing with all of us.

Awesome stand, and we loves the maple! Find us a great recipe :).

I love the stand, and now I want to make one of my own! I just wonder how critters are not a problem. I’m sure they replenish the stock daily and not leave food at night, but even during the day it looks like a quiet spot. Curious minds want to know….

I see a 2+ hour road trip in my very near future! Thank you Mavis!

I love this! We live in Tennessee where the honor system is used on lots of roadside stands. You can find stands with jars of honey, eggs, and even coolers of meat. Someday when I retire from teaching, I want to have a roadside flower stand with the honor system.

I love that stand! We visit my dad in Harrison, Maine every summer and always hike up to Step Falls, just up the road from there. https://www.mahoosuc.org/hikes. You wont regret it!

Another great place is on route 26 Screw Auger falls. When is Maine opening? I am retiring from teaching soon and will be ready for a drive to that pie stand!

We were lucky enough to see this stand on a vacation. Just wanted to let anyone who sees this know that it was still open this last season. The maple cream cookies were phenomenal as well as the bluberry preserves.
We bought a lot of the maple cream cookies. We had some already and added more to make our purchase equal our bill amount. Then we tasted them in the car and were so glad we had so many. They have a facebook page.
We will plan to drive by if we ever make it back to Maine.
