Hannaford $15.95
Buying groceries at Hannaford, is like looking for something to eat at the airport. Overpriced and lackluster at best. And that’s all I have to say about that.
The big conundrum of the week:
HH: What is this?
Mavis: Pasta. There’s a little bit of each of them.
HH: But there are THREE BOXES of pasta!!
Mavis: Blank stare
HH: What am I supposed to do with these? You can’t cook THREE different pastas all at the same time!
And then I left the room.
And well, apparently he figured it out.
Being married. It makes me want to scream sometimes. And at this rate, we are well on track to be the next Costanza’s.
Big salads make me happy.
So do salads with apples and bacon. 🙂
There are people who live to eat, and people who eat to live.
And I am fully aware that I will never be the person who enjoys lingering at a table for two hours to eat a meal. 10 minutes is a stretch for me most days. Maybe I’m weird. Or maybe you feel the same way? I mean, you eat three times a day {5 if you’re snacking} EVERYDAY. Is it really something that needs to be drawn out?
Now, a slice of pie and a cup of tea, that’s something entirely different.
Creamy turkey and wild rice soup. Another one of the HH’s winning recipes.
And last but not least, fish {I think it was cod or halibut} topped with butter and crushed Ritz crackers and a little broccoli to prevent scurvy.
Those were some of the things we ate last week… How about you? What’s been on your dinner menu lately? Curious minds want to know.
Have a wonderful Monday everyone,
~Mavis

I can’t stand going out to eat when it takes forever:
-seated
-water
-finally order taken
-finally food comes
– plates removed
– finally tab comes
-finally it is picked up
-finally credit add returned and exit.
If my husband was real talkative it would be easier. Fast casual dining and two-hour has saved our marriage.
Kim says
Take out (not two hour)
Kim says
We do love to linger at the table with company at our house.
Very tongue in cheek comments. Truly I am married to the nicest guy on the planet!
Lana says
My husband and I both had parents who spent all their retired years bickering and arguing and not speaking to each other and we refuse to do it! It does nothing but make everyday miserable all because each of them had to have their own way every day about everything. It is just not worth it because it was all just SO petty.
We love to have friends over or eat out with friends and linger at the table over conversation and dessert and coffee. Even just the two of us love to sit and talk face to face especially outside in the screen porch. We have no schedule most days so why rush?
Terri says
I eat and get it over with at home. I have no problem lingering with others in a restaurant, though.
Linda Sand says
Yes! At home 20 minutes is a long meal. When out with friends we rarely see 3-4 hours is not unusual.

In regards to Hannaford, I think groceries in general are just getting expensive. Safeway had a 35ct. Canister of Lysol wipes finally in stock yesterday and they were priced at $4.89! I also bought a bag of lemons and the clerk decided to charge me for 4 lemons. I argued and said they are bagged at a bag price and not by each lemon. She looked at me like I was crazy and eventually got another clerk to give her the produce code for the bag because I was being inconvenient. If I wanted to pay $0.79/lemon then I would have bought them by the piece and not $2.49/bag of 4 organic. Maybe they will start charging per egg in a carton soon too. The price wars at the grocery store are nuts and expensive right now. I detest it all right now….the social distancing Police , extra time to wait for them to sanitize between customers, Traffic flow in aisles, everything being so packaged, inflated prices, empty shelves, sales or coupons not honored, Etc.
Shari Harniss says
Amen and amen.

I just saw a 35 count of Lysol wipes on Amazon for $14!!! So I think the $4.89 sounds pretty good.

I’m so jealous of your hard boiled eggs. Every week I look at them with such envy. I rarely get mine to peel nicely. And I’ve tried nearly everything – boiling with baking soda, boiling with vinegar, ice bath immediately after. I just can’t do it.
Tanya says
If you are boiling fresh eggs they are much harder to peel. Let them sit in the fridge for a week
and then boil. That usually helps a lot. Also, eggs cooked in the Instant Pot peel great every time!
Kim says
Look up Ree Drummonds recipe…putting eggs in boiling water, immediately reduce to simmer for 13 minutes, drop in ice bath. I swear! It works everytime.
Kippy says
Pierce one end of each egg with a pin. Bring water to a boil (enough water that it will cover the eggs. Add the eggs to the boiling water, cook for 12 minutes. Drain eggs, rinse in cold water and put in bowl of ice. The eggs will peel easily and no green on the yolk!
A says
In our experience, the best way to get hard boiled eggs to peel, is to start them in boiling water. As long as the water is boiling prior to putting the eggs in the pan, peeling is easy.
Cynthia says
Her eggs are overcooked, hence the green ring. 4 minutes in an Instant Pot, manual release then plunge the eggs into an ice cold water bath delivers perfect creamy boiled eggs.
Shari Harniss says
Wow…
Cheryl says
Here is how I do mine and it works every time. I use a double boiler. Put about 4 inches of water at the bottom of the pot. Went it comes to a boil place the top part with the lid on for 15 minutes. Remove the top boiler and run food water till the eggs are cool to touch. I do 8-10 at a time and they peel very easy. I read somewhere never do a nice bath because the shells are hard to remove. No green around the eggs either.

If we have company, I don’t mind lingering at the table but otherwise I want to get dinner made, eaten, and cleaned up quickly. Last week we had two family dinners so we mostly ate leftovers in between those dinners. I did make a meatloaf to try out my new wall oven..it was delicious. Later today I’m going to Costco so I will pick up 2 or 3 rotisserie chickens and that will make a lot of dinners…tortilla soup, chicken noodle soup, quesadillas, chicken salad…the list goes on and on. I also plan to make bread this week..new wall oven has a proofing feature that my husband thought I would love…we shall see….

Have you watched the great american farm tour? It’s on Amazon prime. Enjoy!!
Jamie says
Gonna need the Turkey and wild rice soup recipe!! Looks delicious and I can only eat Turkey so it will add another soup to my very small repetoire. I didn’t see it in your recipe listings either…I cannot wait!
In MD we have the Lonestar tick…when you are bitten you can no longer eat red meats, and sometimes, as in my case, all meats (except fish and turkey).
Would be most grateful! Happy Harvesting!
Terena says
Oh, Mavis. I just finished a looong shift at our long term care home, and needed something to make me smile. You (and HH) came through again. That pasta story!!! Thank you for sharing.
Tiffany F says
Terena, I’m glad Mavis was here to lighten your mood at the end of a challenging day. Please know that your service is SOOOO appreciated by your residents and especially their families, even though we dont say it often enough! Thank you! (My mama is in a memory care unit.)
Dianne says
Mavis,
I had to laugh at the comment about the 3 types of Pasta. I would of said the same thing your husband did. As they each most likely have different cooking times. I then laughed, as it would be easy to figure out how to cook all 3 types, sticking to the cooking miutes.

I inhale my food most of the time but I love to linger when we have friends over (sadly not too often during covid). This week left over fried chicken, and stuffed peppers that I was given; tonight beef strognaoff with steamed brocolli; tomorrow chilli with rice. I cooked a huge pot full for the local ambulance service and saved a cup each for me and hubby so I can just heat it up and no pans to wash. At the end of the week I am making a lamb stew with potato’s celery and brussel sprouts for the Ambulance service so we get a cup of it each. I have a 22 quart roaster oven that I throw everything into and cook on low and slow all night. I take the big pot to them and they return it all cleaned up. I agree Mavis what is the problem with cooking 3 kinds of pasta at the same time but my hubby is just the same? When I make mac n cheese I use whatever pasta I have available, smothered in homemade cheese sauce who cares it is so yummy. Hubby prefers elbow macaroni to the shells, Me, the homeless shelter and ambulance service are happy to get what they can
Lynda says
Yes, you CAN cook three kinds of pasta at once! He needs to learn those skills!!
DIANE DODGE says
I LOVE the HH stories!
Annette says
How smart of you!! Sometimes you just have to bite your tongue and walk away.
Carol says
Did you make the face with the eggs and pickle on purpose?!
Christina@Bargainblog says
Haha I had to go back and check it out. So cute, and I hope Mavis did that smiley on purpose.

My husband eats so fast that I wonder if 1) he even tasted it and 2) he even chewed it and 3) did he notice how nicely it was plated. I know for sure #3 is a no way and the other two are a maybe! At least I know I tried!
