General Store – Pizza Pizza! $14.00
Friday night pizza, maybe it’s our new thing?
Big Box Store $13.44 {Because our little General Store doesn’t sell puff pastry}.
Big breakfast. 2 weenies, leftover potatoes and sprouts sautéed with a bit of onion and peppers. Perfection.
Big salad. Current favorite dressings are: Ken’s Greek, Ken’s 1000 island, and homemade bacon mustard vinaigrette.
Chocolate cake. It makes life better. And YES, that is a teal colored wall. I bet you didn’t believe me when I told you Rainbow Brite painted my house. Every room pretty is much a different color.
We took last weeks leftover pot roast and turned it into a Shepard’s pie.
Bakery Treats $23.02 Miso Soup and Spring Rolls $27
On Saturday the HH and I {and Lucy too!} hopped in the car and set off on a food adventure. I’m not really one for leaving the house these days {staying home warm in my pajamas and working on crafts is just too darn appealing} that when I venture out, I like to make the most of it.
Our first stop was at the Tinder Hearth Bakery in Brooksville, Maine to pick up our pre-order of Saturday morning baked goods. My friend Heather and I found the place last March and I’ve been wanting to go back ever since. The cinnamon buns are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!
When we pulled into the driveway at the bakery we noticed a little food caboose was there offering Miso soup and spring rolls {and a few other things too} and well, we made sure to buy something from them as well.
Miso soup. Wowza! I think I’ve only had miso soup once before, but holy cow was it ever good. And so now I want the HH to make it for me. Anyone know what all the floaty bits are? Spices? Anyone have a good recipe they want to share? And what kind/brand of miso paste should we get?
We also stopped off at Dot’s Market and Cafe in Lincolnville and split one of their hot roast turkey, bacon and brie cheese sandwiches. It was delicious and just the thing for a cold and windy Maine day.
I probably gained 5 pounds last week…. but who cares, it was totally worth it. 😉
Good food and good times, what more could you ask for?
Have a great Monday everyone, and have fun in the kitchen this week.
~Mavis

i think the floaty bits a either Dashi or Bonito flakes. Either of them you can get at an Asian grocery store. I do know you want yellow miso, not red. This is the recipe I’ve used before : https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/miso-soup-recipe/

Is calling hot dogs weenies a west coast thing? I know that they can be referred to that way, e.g., beans and weenies, but calling a hot dog a weenie all the time sounds weird. Granted, I live in Michigan and we generally call soda pop just “pop”.
Crystal Beck says
Not a west coast thing at all. I have never heard someone refer to a hot dog as weenies in my entire life living in Oregon.
Kelli says
Haha! I know right? I’m in Michigan too and what she calls spring rolls, we call fresh rolls. Spring rolls are fried. Funny!
Dianne says
Kelli, I thought the same. Spring Rolls are asian with shrimp, silk noodles, bean pods etc, and deep fried in Ohio & Michigan.

Technically it was an apple and chicken sausage. But they’re all weenies to me. 🙂

In regards to miso soup, it depends. Traditional Japanese preparation is very simple to make at home – dashi (soup stock) and miso paste. You add in what takes your fancy: tofu, wakame, bits of fish, potato, daikon, etc. Lots of variety on miso pastes too – anywhere from shiro (white and mildly sweet) to the stronger aka (red). The floaty bits — It may be small bits of chopped scallion, perhaps some togarashi powder (blended spice powder with sesame and chilis).

Mavis, this is just a guess, because I don’t know what goes in miso soup, but the little floaty things look like garlic to me (the kind that comes prechopped in the jar). Just a guess!
Sue says
In the south a hotdog is a weenie, a weenie is a hot dog depends who your talking to.
Mavis love your adventures, glad Lucy got to explore also.

Mavis – love the posts and so excited about your new home! I laughed out loud at the photo of the chocolate cake with the teal paint wall in the background! We all know your love for white walls! Haha! But hey, I’m hoping you can give us an update on your parents; how are they doing? How do you find living so far away from them? Happy Thanksgiving!
Teri says
Yes how are your parents and monkey boy? Happy thanksgiving to you and your family! Love ya Mavis, love your blog.

I use Miso Master brand.Their mellow white miso is so tasty. Perfect for any time but especially cold days 🙂
Wynne says
I like white miso for soup too–the mildest. The dashi base is just kelp (kombu) and bonito flakes, but if you want it even easier, there are instant dashi packets on Amazon. They’re decent, not like drinking a reconstituted bouillon cube. Pretty sure the floaty bits are not shichimi togarashi (which is bright orange) but highly recommend it if you like a little heat.
