Yesterday the HH put together our new fire pit. The whole project took him about 30 minutes and it was easily the quickest home improvement project he’s tackled since we’ve been here.
And I’m sure he was pretty happy about that! 😉
Luckily the area where he selected for the fire pit was pretty flat, so he didn’t have to break out the level or do any digging to place the stones. It took him a few trips to the home improvement stores to decide on which stones to use, but in the end he went with the flagstone 11-in l x 4-in h x 6-in d concrete retaining wall blocks from Lowe’s.
At $2.38 a piece for the blocks and $4 for a bag of rocks {I thought we should just use rocks from around our property, but he wanted them to be more uniform… whatever} the cost for the whole project came in at just under $120.
With the woods, and all the driftwood nearby, luckily we’ll never have to pay for firewood.
The Girl decided to come up and stay for a few days and so of course… we had to test it out.
And well, the new fire pit works perfectly and the dessert menu has been set for the summer; smore’s, ice cream and pie. I don’t think it gets any better than that. 🙂
Warm days and sunny skies… WE ARE READY!
Have a great day everyone,
~Mavis

Wow—love your fire pit! Your husband did a fantastic job and made it a useful size! Glad your daughter was able to get away for a few days to try t out with you. I finally got to see my daughter and there is nothing better! How is your son doing? Do you and your husband ever get to visit him or has he been able to visit Maine? I will be glad as life slowly returns to a new version of normal!

Ingredients for s’mores are a pantry staple in my house. I’d love to have a firepit!

What do you do about mowing around the fire pit? We put garden boxes in last year and the grass grows up around them and makes it very difficult to look nice! We have to use our weed eater every time!!

Using uniform bagged rocks for the interior foundation is a positive choice. If he chose yard or beach front rocks, they normally contain a high volume of water. When water is heated it expands and blows apart leaving flying rock bits exploding everywhere. Mix the bits with hot embers and you might have a fire that jumps the surround and smothers in the dry grass for hours after you turn in. I’d add a hose, or a water bucket to your s’mores list, just to be safe!

Have you tried ice cream cone s’mores? Take a cone, fill with marshmallows and your favorite candies (gummies, chocolate, mints, etc). Wrap in foil and put on a grate over the heat. Amazing!

Our firepit gets a workout with all the branches that fall in the yard from silver maples. My son in law welded a steel ring for us, which we sunk into the ground so we wouldn’t have to deal with trimming issues. We ringed it with fire brick just to make sure the hot ring didn’t start any grass fires when it is dry. The grandkids use it as a marshmallow station. We love it!

I can just picture you, the HH and Mrs. HB sitting around that fire pit, in the Adirondack chairs, eating s’mores before and/or after you trip to Monhegan Island.
