Stay Healthy!
Fresh air, it does a body good! This week out on the water we spotted 2 seals. On land we had 14 baby turkeys {and their parents} stroll across our back yard. Also, a mama wood chuck and her 4 babies have taken up residence down by the fire pit, a blue heron stayed for a while on our dock and a deer came to visit one foggy morning.
I tell ya, some days it’s like living in a wildlife park here.

Keep My Husband Busy
Apparently some water got into the console on the boat during the last monster rain storm and was making the engine go up and down on it’s own {not a good thing}. But luckily my maintenance man was able to take it apart and fix the problem. Having a guy around who knows how to fix things… it’s awesome.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
The HH finally decided on a wood chipper, so that’s good, only it might take a few weeks to get here so in the mean time he’s been busy playing with his latest tool, a cordless hacksaw.
We’ve been working on clearing all the overgrown brush along the property and the cordless hacksaw has been a HUGE help! It’s light enough that even I can use it and so far, I’ve collected about 4 wheelbarrows full of small logs and kindling for the woodstove.
Things We’d Like to Buy
A dinghy- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}

Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
I have been off of Facebook for about 24 days now and I don’t miss it one bit. I’ve also been able to get a lot more {book} reading done lately… hmmm I wonder if there is a connection there. 😉

Try Everything That Head Tide Oven Offers This Summer
Head Tide Oven is located in the small town of Damariscotta, Maine and is only open a few months out of the year… so I will have to be super diligent if I’m going to try everything before the bakery closes shop at the end of summer. 🙂
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I may need to take a week off from buying pies.
When we picked up our treats from Head Tide Oven this week, we immediately split the slice of chocolate cake and had a slice of the cherry pie as soon as we got back home. They were both so good, I had two more slices of pie that day. FOR A TOTAL OF THREE SLICES OF PIE, and a half of slice of chocolate cake in less than 10 hours and by the next morning I was STILL in a food coma.
Oh my word… talk about too much of a good thing.
The pie is gone now {I polished off the last slice yesterday} but I think I might need a little break. 🙂
Items I’ve Tried From Head Tide Oven in Damariscotta, Maine this summer:

My House Projects For This Year
I wasn’t planning on painting the house this year, but hey, I’m about 30% done with the job and we both agree that a white is a much better house color than old man beige. I should be able to get started on the garage by mid-week.

- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}

Mel says
My original goals are postponed because this year has been such a difficult one for us. The most recent difficult thing was that we had to euthanize our 5 year old cat, which was devastating. But, before our cat died, he befriended two stray cats that are now hanging out in our yard. So, my goal for the next few weeks is to trap them and get them to a vet for vaccines and everything. If they’re healthy and not someone else’s lost pets (the vet will scan them for microchips), the goal after that would be to adopt them (and explain that to our dog). The first vet appointment is next week, so this week I’m conditioning them that the trap means food by feeding them near or in it but not setting it. So far so good–one cat was nuzzling the trap after she ate breakfast today.
Nancy Sadewater says
Mel, I am so sorry for the loss of your furbaby. I hope are able to socialise the strays and get them taken care of by the vet. We have three we are working to socialise and have them spayed/neutered.
Mel says
Thanks. The cat we lost started as a stray in our yard (it took us 2 years to be able to pet him, but then we installed a cat door to train him to come in only to awake find him in bed with us that night). So, I’m cautiously optimistic we can get these strays socialized to people. But there are a lot of unknowns, including whether or not they will get along together (I’ve only seen them separately). Also, after losing our guy so young, I’m paranoid they will already be ill. But, he was a real handful, so I sort of see him presenting us with this challenge as his antics living on after him.
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh Mel, I’m so sorry. 🙁 How sweet though that he crawled into bed with you guys after being a stray for so long.
Mel says
Thanks. We’re heartbroken, but he really was the sweetest. Our elderly dog doesn’t like any other animals (she was abused in a previous living situation), but she loved him. He was very patient with her lack of social skills (she tried to eat him a couple of times early on, but he took it as some kind of compliment). Eventually, she got to the point where they’d nap together, and she’d kiss him when she thought we weren’t looking.
Peg says
I’m so sorry about your cat. We recently put down our last dog, and it was extra hard because there won’t be another. Aging and husband’s continued declining health are just a couple reasons. Our son put down his German Shepherd this weekend, which he got from a German Shepherd rescue in 2016. That poor dog (renamed Bear) was a hot mess when he got him. At least the second half of his life was better than the first. I cried when he told me. The only bad thing about having a pet is we generally outlive them.
Mel says
Thanks. I’m very sorry about your dog and your son’s dog. And I know what you mean about the second half of their life being better–it’s extra sad for me that our cat actually spent the majority of his short life struggling to survive (first as a stray and then because he got sick).
And I know about not being able to get more pets. We’re still young enough that we can, but we’re in a situation where it would be difficult for us to have an indoor-only cat (though I prefer that for safety), and most adoption places require that. We haven’t seen any strays since our cat turned up 5 years ago. Seems like as soon as I said that our cat found these two strays. In short, you might find a way to have another pet somehow, even if the circumstances don’t seem like they’d allow it now.
Robin in WI says
Hi, Peg. My husband and I are middle-aged and will have to start considering pets’ lifespans as well. Have you considered fostering or adopting senior animals? We took in a 9-year-old chocolate Lab who was on the kill floor. Nothing wrong with him — simply unwanted because he was “old.” We gave him a good life for 4 years. I read about others taking in animals that are 20 or so because they don’t want them to die alone in a shelter. Or animals that are deaf, blind, etc. That’s what I want to do. 🙂
Peg says
I’m considering fostering for a local dog rescue, but it will have to be down the road .
Jeanine says
I’m looking forward to the Lasagna Garden process. I looked it up and want to give it a try, but need to wait until fall after most of my veges and flowers have petered out. Some of my flowers came up on their own this year from reseeding. I have so many zinnias…can’t wait for them to start blooming. The strawberry patch is amazing this year. So many berries about to ripen. Zucchini plants are doing well…just another week and my basil is coming along. I will be making pesto and freezing patches for winter. Tomato plants have lots of blooms…can’t wait! Gardening keeps us busy.
Peg says
I’ve made your chicken salad twice in 3 days. It’s so good! Added some minced red onion to the second batch.
Will you ever consider adding a turtle to your ceramic ornaments?
Jennifer says
Curious if you will sell an owl garland… my favorite!
Marilyn Bender says
And maybe an Australian Shephard? That would be so cool!
Peg says
That’s a great idea!

I did have a list of goals for this year. I was even able to cross off a couple by the end of February. Then, on March 22nd, I was given custody of my 13 year old granddaughter and my list of goals went right out the window! The goals were then changed . . .
1) make sure granddaughter passes the 7th grade – DONE!
2) help her adjust to being 300 miles away from everything she knows – IN PROGRESS (counseling sessions have started)
3) get all the custodial paperwork and training completed – DONE
4) get her horseback riding lessons set up (just completed lesson 13) – IN PROGRESS
5) get her ready for school (starts 8/11 in my area)
6) continue working on items for Etsy shop as time allows
7) continue working on losing weight (from original goal list) – lost almost 7 lbs!
8) take one day at a time . . .one step at a time (working on it . . .)
Karen says
You are amazing, Rosemary, and have a BIG heart!!
Rosemary Calhoun says
That is so sweet of you to say. Thank you.
Sue says
Turtles, yes please! I love sea turtles. Lighthouses, yes please!
I love light houses.
I have done lasagna gardening before and I’m thinking a new spot needs to be in my future. Will need someone to bring me sea weed from the gulf.
Veronica says
What all do you do with your cilantro? I harvested a ton this year and we are all out of ideas!
Mel says
I find cilantro doesn’t freeze well by itself, but it freezes okay in things. For instance, I freeze this quesadilla filling, which is one of our favorite meals: https://www.budgetbytes.com/hearty-black-bean-quesadillas/
For fresh dishes:
-sheet pan nachos
-enchiladas (you could freeze the sauce with cilantro mixed in)
-chicken tortilla soup (this freezes if you add the tortilla after thawing/reheating)
-pico de gallo, salsa, or guacamole
-cilantro lime rice
-cilantro lime shrimp, chicken, etc.
-taco salad
-peanut noodles and other Thai-style dishes
-green goddess salad dressing

I must say the picture of cutting branches scared the bejeebers out of me. My husband had a few scars on his legs from saws jumping unexpectedly. Be very careful please! I don’t want to see more pictures of wounds.
