Stay Healthy!
Did you know each bowl of Total cereal has 100% of your daily value of 11 vitamins and minerals? The HH was eating his cereal the other day when I walked by the back of the box and it caught my eye.
We don’t take any sort of vitamins, but it did make me wonder how many people 100 years ago were vitamin deficient, and when the whole take a pill instead of eating your vitamins thing all started.

Get the Photos on My Phone Down to Less Than 1,000 {started the year with 2863 photos}
I spied these pots at Home Depot the last time we were there and I thought they’d be perfect for the front porch. But holy cow man, they’re a bit spendy! $70 for the large one. I’m going to have to think about that.
It’s been a long time since I’ve bought flower pots though, so maybe this is the norm.
*I currently have 1232 photos on my phone.
Clean Out My Closet
I didn’t get rid of anything this past week but LL Bean has this blue check shirt on sale for $19.99 {I love their twice a day markdowns} so I snatched it up and they sent me a $10 off my next purchase {no minimum} coupon along with it.

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
Yesterday morning that sweet husband of mine dug all the holes for my tulip bulbs and then I got distracted and forgot to plant them. This morning we are having 20+ mile an hour winds and it’s raining like mad. So I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get them in the ground. 🙁
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border{Done}- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 8755 sales on Etsy}.
Yesterday I added a bunch of new wool bundles to my Etsy shop.
Only 1245 to go! That means I’ll have to sell 20.08 items a day until the end of the year to hit my goal. 🙂

Our small town library spoils me rotten. Whatever book I request for purchase, they do! It’s better than Santa! However, I hadn’t thought to request audio books.
Terribly excited for 2022 as you take us along for your kitchen remodel.
Pam T says
I love your kitchen idea. Clean and neat, but behind glass door. Just lovely.
Elle says
I love that kitchen cabinet setting!!!!
Congratulations on all of the goal achievement so far this year 🙂
My goals are boring but I’m super excited about my knee replacement-recovery on track, low pain (never needed narcotic which makes me so happy)-another 6weeks or so I’ll be good as new and can walk full throttle and cycle again! 2 eye procedures to prevent glaucoma–both eyes working fantastic/happy surgeon/happy patient. Quilting: 19 finishes and at least 5 more before the year ends. Lastly, stay covid free-got vaccinated and will be getting booster at 8 months. Our lives are far more “peopley” than yours 😉
Peg says
Will you consider writing a post about the proper way to tend to tomato plants once in the ground and growing like mad? Apparently I’ve found the perfect location because they grow by leaps and bounds, and they quickly are out of control. I refer to them as my little shop of horrors.
Brianna says
We have a built in China cabinet in our house. It is an odd location off the kitchen and not in the dining room and honey oak in color, but similar to your photo. If we were staying I would have painted it a nautical blue and put fun hardware on it, but since we are listing our house soon, the hubby already has moved for his new job in VA, I am just leaving it alone and hopefully the next family has a great vision for it. I like what you like and that is the same color and idea I had in mind after scouring the Internet over the years for ideas. Go for it!
Annette says
Do you like to plant tulips in clusters instead of lined up single file?
Mavis Butterfield says
Clusters I guess, but I like them the most when they are planted in swaths.
tia in boise says
I’m wondering if wild turkeys are friendly, unfriendly, or just ambivalent?
As far as my list for the year:
*most goals have taken a backseat to super-busy (incident outside my control) school year that is sucking up a bit of my time…
*will be focusing on getting some books finished before the library puts out an APB for them
Cindy says
I’m in Utah, so I can’t speak for Maine turkeys, but the ones in our neighborhood don’t ever let anyone get too close to them. They’re pretty protective of their chicks (which are ADORABLE) too. We often have 50+ in our yard at one time, in Spring and Fall and they can get SUPER loud. I still laugh every time I recall the sight of my husband chasing them off while waving a fallen branch because he works nights and the cacophony was keeping him up!
Jennifer says
I started watching Doc Martin and I’m going to keep it going a little while. I’m halfway through the second episode, and I can tell it’s pulling me in.
Angela says
Mavis, are those hydrangeas still blooming in Maine?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes!!! The Bloomstruck variety will bloom until frost. I love them.
Angela says
That’s awesome! We’re in Georgia, and our hydrangeas stopped blooming in August. I’m definitely putting the bloomstruck variety on my to buy list. Thanks, Mavis!
PSUCHIC06 says
I like to think that a 100 years ago people were growing their own food, and preserving their own food …and were eating very square meals… so vitamins were not an issue. whereas today we have to worry about what is in our foods in regards to preservatives. I swear…preservatives are the biggest problem!
Great post Mavis…got the mind realy thinking!
If you ever get curious…on firebrick and roku is the PCN channel …PA based, but I love watching their factory & farm tours! (There is a fee…but for a month to check it out…it isn’t bad…come January our PA Farm Show will be on in all its’ glory…)
Hope Maine has such a thing too!
Gigi says
I think I heard that most people were getting what they needed from food, but with the industrial processing of food, a lot of the previously eaten parts were toss out (think whole wheat was replaced by white flour). So people started having health problems and food started needing to be “fortified” to put everything back in. It might have been the movie Game Changers on Netflix.
Terri Lindeke says
That and sugar was a luxury. No chemicals, no “nonfood” additives. But people were also much shorter, did not live as long… people had many children as it was pretty common for them to die before growing up.
If you had a disease, you would probably die from it, vs getting the medical care you can today.
Every time has it good points and bad points. I love traveling to places that have ancient history… Greece, Italy, and more .. even Egypt where they are finding ruins now that predate the pyramids.
Judi says
Love, love, LOVE the built in for the kitchen!
Veronica says
How are you and your hubby like the new griddle as opposed to the BBQ?
Mavis Butterfield says
He really likes the new griddle. Not sure if he has a preference though as they do different things.
Tisha says
There was a time when people often suffered from malnutrition, but perhaps a little longer than 100 years ago. If one was lucky, the deficiencies were only a nuisance, if one was unlucky and had the deficiencies when they were developing they could have bowed legs from ricketts, teeth would be loose, etc. etc. If one was lucky enough to own fertile land, they had a better chance of a more varied diet, but even so, many cultures have not always valued green leafies, etc. Even some of the upper class could have vitamin deficiencies based on the food fads of the time. We are very lucky to have the variety of food available to us that we do and the knowledge available of what it can do for us.
Cindy says
I love hearing about the Maine happenings, the gardens and researching you go into and the researching items hh plans to buy. Did you signup for LL Bean twice a day mark downs and catalog? I love LL Bean clothes just a bit pricey without a clearance price. Your email is one I look forward to receiving everyday.
