Keep My Husband Busy
Today we are going to attempt to get the dinghy on the trailer. I have no idea what we are doing but the HH has watched a bunch of videos so what could possibly go wrong, right?
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
This year’s honey do list:
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
Bought myself a new filling for $300 this past week. That was exciting.
A dinghyClothesline- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
Current source of entertainment… Wondering how long our 2 cords of firewood are going to last. We bought 2 cords this fall {I wanted to get 4, but the HH was like no, 2 will be plenty} and we have it stacked in 3 places. The garage, and 2 spots outside.
I’d say we have about 7-10 days to go with the wood that is stacked in our garage {about 20% of the wood we started with}. So at the rate we’re burning firewood, I suspect we’ll run out by the end of February.
Our oil tank is full, so it’s nice to have a back up, but still, I think it would be nice to get through an entire winter season without having to fill it up again.
- Goodbye Facebook {Done!}
- Goodbye Amazon Prime {Done!} $119 a year
- Goodbye Hulu {Done!} $54.99 a month *
- Goodbye Netflix {Done!} $7.99 a month
- Goodbye PicMonkey {Done!} $50 a year
- Goodbye keeping my cell phone in my back pocket and checking it constantly {so far so good}
- Limit time online to 3 hours a day {for writing, working, and Etsy}
* Hulu is actually now $64.99 a month for the live tv version {live sports, live news}. You can get it for $5.99 a month but all that does is play tv shows and old movies {with ads}.

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
Well, it finally happened, my beloved Bloomstruck hydrangeas finally lost their color this past week. I guess the frost is what got them. May through November though… that’s a pretty long time to be in bloom.
Also, I didn’t get the last of the 1,500 bulbs planted yesterday {I decided to have a pajama day instead} so I still have those to plant before I can pack everything up and officially hunker down inside for the winter.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border{Done}- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall{Done}

Lana says
Sadly, the South is changing and not for the better. In the last few years we have been overrun by hordes of people moving here and they are rude and just don’t understand our ways and they make no effort to fit in. It just makes ne heartsick.
DJ says
Lana, which state in the south do you live in? I’m in Texas, small town, and people from a large town are moving In as fast as they can. They are rude and don’t try to fit in, in the country.
Patti says
We are also seeing a huge influx of people from everywhere here in South Carolina. Our leaders have scheduled 4500 new houses to be built on my side of town this year and we have no idea how the traffic, schools, etc. are going to be affected. We have folks from the north (which is normal when people get tired of snow) but now we have folks from California, Washington state, and places in-between. It is crazy! Largely due to the pandemic making families decide they need change.
Brianna says
Yep, we are selling our dream to raise our family in Montana and moving east across the country. This is not the same state I grew up in and they are pushing all of us families out who have been here for generations. Our property taxes are outrageous, our schools are over crowded, the newbies bulldoze beautiful areas for their Montana oversized dream houses, they want city amenities and HOAs.Our small town lost the ‘small town’ vibe awhile ago. We cannot afford to stay and the jobs haven’t caught up to the steep rise in the cost of living. There are lines everywhere…..traffic lights, grocery stores, gas pumps, and waiting lists at cafe’s and crime has gotten bad.
Marcia says
I don’t think this is necessarily a southern thing. I live in California, which isn’t known for politeness in the first place, and it’s getting worse here too. I think that in general, people are getting ruder (you only have to read about recent plane flights to see that!)
Maybe it’s a city/ suburb/ country thing? (We are getting a lot of transplants from Los Angeles and NYC).
It’s a two way street though…not only should they try to fit in, but you also need to be flexible. I learned that when I moved here in the first place 20 years ago.
Pj Truman says
Love the new snowman!
Nancy D says
Yes! So sweet! Perfect expression and love his little arms!
Lavinia Pirlog says
I love how you always make lists and tick off once you accomplish it. Such an inspiration for me….Love your blog.
HollyG says
I made a great (at least I think they’re great) batch of sourdough bagels, planted the rest of the garlic for the 2021-22 garden, and got my booster vaccine this week. The vegetable garden is tucked in until spring and most of the outdoor projects are on hold as autumn brings rains to the PNW.
I also took my first substitute job after retiring from teaching a couple of years ago – the schools here are getting really desperate for subs so I thought I’d pitch in a little to try to help. I don’t love teaching with a mask, but oh-well. The kids were very nice and I got to quickly remember slope/intercept and y=mx + b.
Lyra says
My mother-in-law and husband have been watching Doc Martin in the evenings when I’m usually working on more creative projects, and I quite happily listen along. There’s something so wholesome and satisfying about the best British programming, and this really hits the spot.
Joanna says
I finally painted a small bathroom in the house that was 1970’s yellow!! Thanks Mavis for making me write down my goals! Ps painted it frost… Fancy for white!!
Marcia says
Even if you don’t hit your goal weight, 10 lbs is nothing to sneeze at.
Cat says
My husband thought I was crazy but I insisted on the biggest sink I could fit into my kitchen, and found a beautiful stainless steel one that fits ALL my giant pots and pans including the turkey roaster. It’s way better than two tiny sinks where nothing fits. I still love it five years later.
