Hello Monday! It’s a cold and wet morning here in Mid-Coast Maine with some snow showers possibly coming our way on Wednesday… exciting!
On December 1st the HH presented me with a Bonne Maman Advent Calendar and so it’s been toast and jam every morning since at Camp Butterfield.
Each morning I wake up, open the designated door and get to try a new jam… Talk about the PERFECT gift!!!
Toast and jam with my morning tea. I love it. 🙂
This week was a good one for meals too. There was salmon with rice and peas.
Beans and rice, rice and beans.
The HH made a roasted chicken one night…
And then we had nachos the next.
And then a chicken pot pie the next night.
And finally a pot of homemade chicken soup! It’s amazing how far you can stretch a roasted chicken!!
For our date day last week we went to Damariscotta and ended up eating at Que Rico for lunch. We both had burritos {very good, and VERY filling} but I forgot to take a picture of the burritos and the homemade tortilla chips that came with our lunch.
But the totally funny thing about our lunch was that we came home with a dozen of free eggs!
After we placed our order and were sitting down waiting for our lunch, I noticed about a half a dozen cartons of eggs sitting on the counter with “FREE” marked on the sides of them. And then I noticed some guy at the next table over eating his taco with a carton of the free eggs next to his lunch.
And so I asked him…. Are the eggs really free?
He just sort of gave me a funny look and said “yes” and went back to eating his taco.
The HH was totally embarrassed but I was like… Seriously, only in Maine can you get free eggs with your lunch!
It turns out, one of the restaurant’s regular customers has something like 40 chickens and I guess when he gets too many eggs, he just drops them off at the restaurant and they leave them out for anyone who wants them.
Maine. The way life should be. 🙂
Have a great day everyone, stay warm.
~Mavis

The HH clearly has many admirable skills, qualities and abilities, but finding that advent calendar for you is over the top. We need to start a fan club!

Wow! That advent calendar looks like a lot of fun!
Lori says
What an awesome advent calendar. Their jams and jellies are delish.

I’m thinking just how far you can stretch a chicken… unless if you have teenagers living at home! We’ve had a hard time adjusting to cooking for just 2 of us!

I bought the same calendar for my husband – who loves jam-and-cheese sandwiches. I think its part of his heritage. Every evening after dinner instead of dessert, we evaluate that day’s jam on a cracker, rating 1-10. So far I have not been impressed and nothing has been higher than a 7.5 but I’ve been told my standards are “too high” 😀 .
These calendars do sell out early so I would advise people next year to buy it when they see it – I bought directly from Bonne Maman.
Apparently the “European” version of this calendar comes with tiny metal spoons! I guess the U.S. would consider that a choking hazard. 🙁
I also bought my three rescue doggies each of their own Trader Joe’s advent calendars. Its salmon and sweet potato every day but they don’t mind.

What a wonderful gift!

Free Eggs?!?!? That is crazily awesome, good for the farmer and the restaurant :). Life in Maine is right, good for you guys!

We miss you guys {and everyone else on the street!}. 🙂

The more you talk about Maine, the more I want to move there. We live in Minnesota, so aside from the coast line, the weather can be quite similar, at times. I’m so glad you have settled into your new location.

I was gifted the Bonnie Maman Advent calendar , what a treat.
I love the mini jars and look forward to opening each one.
Angela W. says
Have some mini jars leftover from your holiday advent calendar? Simply poke a few holes in the top of the lids, and you’ll have an upcycled assortment of petite salt, pepper, and cinnamon sugar shakers!

Aww, your husband is so sweet! Love it. I almost bought that calendar for myself, but I waited too long

It’s so fun to read your posts, Mavis. They are so heart-warming.

I never even thought of a jam Advent calendar. Clearly I don’t get around much. (It’s a great idea.)
Not to be a poop, Mavis — but how could you go out to lunch at Que Rico, and not spend a cent on your December tally? Giftcard?
Mavis Butterfield says
Date days {eating out, adventures} do not fall into my grocery /bringing bakery treats home category. 🙂
