I think my number one strategy for saving money on groceries this year has been staying out of the stores.
I know I’ve said it many times before, but I know I could truly be one of those people who lives on an island and only leaves once a year for supplies.
When we used to live in high maintenance suburbia and were surrounded by grocery stores and strip malls, the temptation to “pop in” for an item or two was huge. But since moving away from that type of environment, I rarely have the urge to shop… for anything. Unless of course it’s wool. ๐ Then that’s another story.
Our big purchase last week: Hannaford $15.65 {missing from the photo is a 1/2 gallon of milk}
The tomatoes were $4.90 and the avocado was $1.39. Insane.
Here are some of the meals we ate last week:
Ritz Cracker chicken, roasted brussel sprouts and buttered rice.
Leftover pot roast stew from the freezer section at Casa De Butterfield.
Homemade meatballs. No pasta was needed. Three meatballs filled me up.
The last of the turkey, cinnamon sweet potatoes, buttered rice and home canned applesauce.
Leftovers.
Turkey, bacon and tomato sandwiches on homemade Dutch oven crusty bread.
I also made a loaf of Dutch oven cinnamon raisin bread last week.
For dinner last night we had Frito pie. ๐ It was fantastic and we felt awful afterwards but hey, sometimes you’ve just got to eat junk food for dinner, right?
And… we also had another kind of pie too!
A French coconut custard pie from Southern Baked Pie Company.
Mrs. HB had meant to send me a pie for my birthday.
But the first pie she ordered she accidently sent to herself. And when she ordered the second pie, she got my address wrong and so it was delivered to someone else {lucky them}.
The third pie though… it made it to our house! ๐ Wahooo!
The pie was so good… there are only 2 slices left {which I’m sure will be gone by lunchtime}.
Sweet friends and food gifts make the best gifts if you ask me. ๐ Well done Mrs. HB!
So how did YOU do with your grocery shopping this past week? Did you find any good deals?
Market Basket has a bunch of our favorite vegetables on sale this week {green beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts} so I think I’ll have him stock up when he’s down south for an appointment this week.
Here’s to a warm and hopefully good week of collecting sap,
~Mavis

In case you missed it, last summer I wrote about 10 Foods With a Long Shelf Life {That You Should Always Have in Your Pantry} and I’m happy to report that even with our reduced spending on groceries this year, we still have a nice supply of all the items above.
Prices for practically everything are on the rise, so when you see a good deal, STOCK UP, store it properly and keep on trucking.

I just looked at the link for Southern Baked Pie Company – today only (March 14) they are selling sweet pies BOGO. See red banner across the top of the website.

I just read through the ideas to keep on hand always.
I do this to keep out the little critters that invade beans, rice, flour and meal.
I put a bay leaf in the container before closing. Iโv done this a long time and havenโt had a problem with bugs.

I got a laugh when Mrs. Hillbilly accidently sent a pie to herself, sounds like a good accident to have. Third times a charm, glad you got your Birthday pie. I also get pie instead of cake for my Birthday.

Mavis, I saw your favorite Rao’s Marinara Sauce is $2.80 off at Costco. You may need to have HH check it out and stock up!

Hi Mavis, I also went and re-read your post, it already inspired me quite a bit last summer ๐
I have a probably weird question, though – when you talk about stuff lasting really long when stored in air tight containers, does it mean you open all the packets and refill them into containers, or do you put the original, closed bags / boxes into airtight containers…??
PS, happy late birthday ๐
