Yesterday I spent the morning removing everything from the upper cabinets in the kitchen. Now our stuff is scattered all over the place in drawers, in closets and in random storage bins. Which is a total pain, but oh well. What else can we do?
The plan for this week is for me to get the ceiling painted and the HH to make sure none of the horseshoe nails in the floorboards are popping up above the boards. And of course to make sure he has everything he needs to get started on sanding the floors this weekend. 🙂
The cabinets were pretty easy to remove, and the HH got to use his new multi-meter tool to check for ??? so he was happy. 🙂
The dust bunnies behind the refrigerator though… Whoa Nellie! Talk about gross. Seriously, when was the last time you pulled out your refrigerator to check behind it? {If you’re like me, probably never.}
I vacuumed up the floaty bits first and then got on my hands and knees and scrubbed the floor.
I think I’m going to keep three of the upper cabinets to reuse down in the basement, but the rest of them will be headed for the Habit Re-Use Store along with the range fan for someone else to enjoy.
And those long boards that were used around the refrigerator? I might do something artsy with those… I’m just not sure what yet.
The good news is… the upper cabinets are gone!
The bad news is… I have a lot of painting, and the HH has a LOT of sanding to go.
Home improvements… they’re so much more fun when you don’t have to do them yourself. 😉
Here’s to another productive day at Camp Butterfield,

Good luck in the remodel! I’m excited to see the progress that you make. Kitchen remodels can be very rewarding. I wonder if you might be willing to share where you found your canning cupboard? It is so lovely and I am Looking for something similar for our kitchen. Thanks!
Mavis Butterfield says
Pottery Barn. 🙂

This is exciting! It looks so much brighter in there already! I can’t wait to see what you choose to do, and of course… the showcase Aga! I had already made plans to clean behind our fridge this week.

So, tell me about the shoes you have on in the photo where you’re vacuuming dust bunnies? I’m on the hunt for slip ons and those look like they may be.
Mavis Butterfield says
They are the Haflinger Cuoricini Clog in grey. 🙂 I ordered a size down and they are very comfortable!
Jeanie says
Haflingers! The best!

Those are the only kind of slippers I buy know. They are well worth the money like owning a pair of Birkenstock. I have two pair one is 11 years old the second pair 5 years old.

Not sure how I missed it in the past pictures, but those floor boards are beautiful! I love the wide planks; ours are wood too but they are skinny 2 inch planks.

Forgive me, but I must have missed something. Right now, I have a fever. But, what is the plan for the upper wall? Shelves or something. I cannot imagine being without that storage. I just don’t know what is the plan.
Erin says
We have been house hunting for 4 months. The new trend seems to be shelves or nothing for upper storage in kitchens. I don’t get it. We didn’t put offers on several houses for this reason. I hope you feel better soon.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
Erin,
Thanks for the answer and well wishes.
Gayle says
We took out the upper cabinets almost ten years ago and still love open shelves. The kitchen is lighter and brighter! If I knew how to share a photo I would!
Leslie says
I’d be very tempted to put in a bigger window!!
Richelle says
Me, too!
Mimi says
I agree on the bigger window suggestion! I miss my huge kitchen window with a view from our last house – it will be a priority in our next one.
Ellen in Clackamas says
Mavís, will you have to take out a bottom Cabinet when you get your Aga stove?
Kirsten says
I was wondering the same thing.
Mavis Butterfield says
Since the AGA is larger, there will be (2) 16” cabinets on each side of the stove. That will be all the cabinets on that side.
Nancy says
I’ve got to get me one of those “multi-meter tools” so I can check on ???!
Mrs. M. says
Vacuum those refrigerator coils while you’re at it. Doing that a few times a year will make your fridge (and freezers) work more efficiently and last longer…. small investment of time to save a lot of money down the road.
We, too, are remodeling (whole house). Yes, it would be MUCH better if someone else was doing it all.
Thanks for sharing your journey!

We had 20 layers of the most amazing wallpaper choices anyone could imagine, including red bandana! Found all this when we removed the upper cabinets. We love our open shelves.
Maggie says
We did that with our kitchen.Always wanted a kitchen island with a breakfast bar, so we reused the wall cabinets, fixed some legs on and put a lovely quartz top on.
Anna says
So, what happens with storage. Where do you end up putting things needed in the kitchen.
