Last week Hannaford had a couple of good deals so we decided to take advantage of the lower prices and buy a few of our favorite things.
Orange Juice $2.29, avocados $0.89, plain yogurt $2.12, brussel sprouts $1.99 a pound and asparagus $2.69 a pound.
Avocado toast and soft tacos are always a high priority when we’re able to get them on sale. We had both!
I also roasted a few of our butternut squash for a batch of butternut squash soup.
And we roasted a whole chicken {I bought a couple when they were on sale a few weeks ago for $0.99 a pound} for a big batch of the HH’s homemade chicken noodle soup. He makes the BEST soup and it freezes well and it’s nice to have tucked away for nights I don’t feel like cooking.
And I made a batch of Mel’s Drunken Beans.
And another batch of the pepperoni pizza focaccia the HH loves so much.
And one night we went bowling and ordered Slim Jims {the HH} and nachos and steak and cheese chimichangas from the snack bar. The food was sort of gross and fun all at the same time. 😉
My highest score was a whopping 46 points! Yee-Haw.
Hey, someone has to finish last, right?
I checked the ads for this week, and the only deal I found that I was interested in was top round roasts at Hannaford for $1.99 a pound. Hot diggety, that’s a great price for pot roast don’t you think? I might have to pick up a few… or 5 for the freezer.
I have no idea what prices are going to be like in 2023, but I have a feeling they aren’t going to get any lower so I might as well stock up when I can.
How about YOU? Have you found any good deals lately? Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Holy cow, A non ground piece of meat for under $5#?!? My dh would be solo happy. I have not bought a whole cut of beef in well over a year because our budget just won’t allow it.
Oh, the things I could do with a top round roast… 😉
Bec says
Oh wow, that is a great price for meat! I’d be thrilled to find ground beef here in the PNW at that price! I need to buy enough ground beef and Italian sausage to make six lasagnas (five for friends and, might as well, one for me) in the next week or so, so I’m keeping my eye on the sales ads with my fingers crossed. I gift lasagnas to my friends for Christmas along with focaccia and frozen cookie dough balls.
Any fun cookie suggestions that will freeze well? Last year I did chocolate chip and chocolate with white chips.
Ronda says
shortbread freezes great as a dough and is easy to add additions too.
Monster cookies with the oatmeal and peanut butter are one of my family’s favorite cookies so I always try to have some dough in the freezer.
What a great gift! I’m sure your friends love it.
Anne Wiebe says
Maybe make veggie lasagna this year???
Annette says
Freeze any cookie dough with a lot of butter or fat.
Rita says
My family loves these and the dough freezes very well! Plus, they’re egg free for anyone who might have an egg allergy. Instead of rolling them into a log, I scoop them out with my cookie scoop.

I agree about the 2023 prices – we’re trying to stock up as well. Which is an interesting thing having moved over the summer and having to restock in general anyway. Does it count if I blow a whole bunch on groceries before January 1st, so I can aim for $100 a month NEXT year? LOL
Judy says
Hi, I’m doing exactly that on Thursday. Just going through my list now.
Melonie K. says
So glad I’m not the only one! Hope you find some great deals in the process!

I think you’re right about food prices in 2023. I don’t have any expectation that prices will be dropping down anytime soon or ever. They don’t tend to drop back down, do they? I mean, I really hope egg prices don’t stay this high, but who knows? I’m having a hard time shopping and not comparing prices to the good old days. The only item that dropped down in price for me on my last shopping trip were dark chocolate and almond bars, which were 10 cents less than a month ago. Everything else was 50 cents more, a dollar more, etc., etc. It really does add up. 🙁

Personally I would stock up as much as I can if I found great prices on any food or other household items that you use. Prices will most probably not decrease as there is a very short lived decrease in energy prices now but those will go back up again. Also if u can buy eggs directly from farmers please do so as it appear grocery stores are also not wanting to pay higher prices to the farmers for their eggs in addition to some cases of Avian flu. The farmers have seen massive increases in the prices they pay for the grain or other food they feed the chicken and needed to increase prices so as to make some sort of profit instead of producing at a loss. In addition prices for packaging of all sort whether it be paper or aluminum or glass is also poised to increase so those increases also have to be passed down.

Our local store Publix (only in the southeast) had prime rib on sale for $5.97 lb, right on time for a Christmas dinner. That’s about the only bargin around.

I found extra lean ground beef (93/7) at our favorite local grocer for $3.77 a pound. It’s $6.97 a pound at walmart! So we stocked up with 20 pounds, and seal-a-mealed it all in one pound packages.
Judy says
Hi Mavis, your focaccia pizza is outstanding. I’ve just bought 20 lbs of hamburger, organic and grass fed from a local farmer for 3.99 a lb. Last week pork butt roasts were .99 a lb at Save-On so I bought 5. All around 8.00 each. Will leave one whole but chopped up all the rest. So many meals from all of that. Also this Thursday I am doing a massive grocery shop. I am aiming to copy your 100.00 dollars a month, or even just a little over when there are good deals. Our freezers are full of garden goodness and we have our own chickens for eggs. You inspire me and I love all your soup recipes.
Loralee from NM says
Why not buy the top round roast at the bargain price and then have the butcher grind it up for you?
Sherry says
Mavis, what do you mix your avacado for the toast. It looks really good.
Mavis Butterfield says
Lime juice and a little salt. 🙂

Agree…prices are going up, and up!
Watching the weekly ads, using the local Mennonite store 1st & the flashfood app (if stores around you use it)…50% of anything they post…bread, fruit & meat…and i freeze it

My Christmas gift to myself is a 7 cu freezer to stock some meats in. My Chef Store has 40lb boxes of boneless skinless chicken thighs for $1.39 a lb!! We also got a 1/4 of a beef so I need the extra space. Walmart has them for $198. So I am going for it.
