Gardening in Maine has been a tough one this year. Luckily though, the frosty temps are nowhere in sight {well, at least not in the 10 day forecast anyway} so that’s nice.
Yesterday the HH and Lucy worked fixing up a loose brick in the walkway while I replaced the mums with pumpkins on the front porch.
I have no idea what I’m going to stick out there once the temps dip though… Any ideas?
Our rhubarb is still going strong.
And so are the chives.
The beets seem to be doubling in size every day. Now they are the size of baseballs. I suppose I should harvest a few of the larger ones and toast them. Roasted beets. Doesn’t that sound good?
The kale I planted about 6 weeks ago is also doing really well. Kale doesn’t mind a little frost though so I suspect it will be the last one standing once the temperatures dip.
We still have about a dozen leeks to go. I love how they look too.
I don’t think the broccoli is going to make it though. 🙁
But the Swiss chard is hanging in there so we’ll have plenty of leafy greens for a while yet.
It really does feel like fall around here lately. Pretty soon all the leaves will drop and it will be time to hunker down and fire up the woodstove.
I don’t know if I’m quite ready yet though… Are you?
Have a good one,
~Mavis

We had our 1st frosty night last night…. so most of the garden is probably done.

Place a container of greens or various twigs/branches on your porch

For your front porch — if you are still in Harvest mode, corn stalks or decorative scarecrows? If you are going to replace your pumpkins with christmas items, maybe containers of pine branches or holly boughs?
Andrea says
Containers of ornamental cabbage for the front porch is an idea. They come in a variety of colors and cabbage is pretty winter hardy.

Small evergreens in pots? Lighted at Christmas?

I live in zone 8b, and I started a “2nd season” garden in August. The green beans are doing great – I’ve been picking green beans almost every day since October 2nd. The pumpkin and watermelon plants have flowers but no fruit yet – probably won’t get any this late in the season. The onions seem to be doing okay and I only got one cucumber before those plants died. The other plants did not do well and fizzled out. This is my first time doing a 2nd season garden – probably not worth doing it again. This has been my year for experimenting with the garden. Hopefully I will have success next year!

How about 2 crabpot Christmas trees with lights? It’s really popular where we live on the coast….

We plant gold beets. We love them roasted. Our favorite. Have you ever grown them?
