About a week or two ago One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Susan mentioned that Standard Baking Company in Portland, Maine had “some excellent French pastries (as well as cookies and scones).” And well, French pastries are my FAVORITE kind of pastries so I told the HH we had to go there on our next date day outing.
And so we did!
Let’s just say, we weren’t disappointed. Not one bit. The set up was cute, the staff was friendly, and the amount of assorted {not to mention beautiful} pastries on display was pretty darn exciting. All it took was one glance and I knew we had hit the jackpot!
I LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!! Well done Susan, well done. Thank you so much for suggesting the place.
Once we got to the counter the HH ordered a sweet roll and I ordered a pear tart. And then I told the girl behind the counter that I kind of just wanted to order one of everything because it all looked so good.
And that’s when the HH rolled his eyes at me and so instead of ordering one of everything {wouldn’t that have been fun!?} I ordered a lemon tart. And then a chive and cheddar scone. And then an almond croissant {for the road} in case our errands lasted longer than expected and we needed a snack.
Every single thing we had was PERFECT!
Now tell me, when does that ever happen? Seriously? If it wasn’t so far away I’d probably try and get a part time job there just so I could try everything {and learn how to make the pastries too}.
Standard Baking Company. It’s just another reason to visit the great state of Maine! I can’t wait to go back.
Keep Calm and Eat On.

Many years ago, I watched a show on PBS “A Few Great Bakeries” and Standard Baking was one of the bakeries featured. I have always wanted to drive around the country and visit every bakery mentioned in the show, especially Standard Baking. Now you have got me craving an almond croissant (and all the other goodies you bought).
P. S. There was also “A Few Great Pies” and one about Sandwiches although I can’t remember the exact title. All shows are drool worthy.

almond croissant is my go to at any new bakery — my absolute fav and by which all bakeries are measured.

When I visited Portland a year ago I stayed at the Hilton next to this wonderful bakery. I had an amazing rye chocolate chip cookie that I still dream about. Thanks for featuring it!

Amazing how rye helps with flavors.

Mavis, Standard Bakery was one of my haunts when I worked in downtown Portland, they used to feature a different daily bread – Wednesday was their potato bread day, always a favorite with my family and I can vouch for most of their pastries,

Another good choice is the European Bakery on Route One in Falmouth or The Bakeshop in Freeport. Although I think that Standard is the best in the area.

My mouth is watering!
I had planned to work on refinishing a piece of furniture this weekend but I think I might drive up to Portland instead. Yum!

I’m SO glad you liked it! The pear tart was a standout for me, too. 🙂
