After our trip to Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light Yesterday we stopped by The Cookie Jar Pastry Shop for donuts.
One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Molly suggested the place {and several others in the South Portland/ Cape Elizabeth area} and so of course, we had to pop by and see if their donuts were the real deal.
And well, THEY WERE!!!
Well done Molly! I ordered exactly what you suggested {the Bismark}. And then I asked if they had any raspberry filled {of course they did!} and then the HH ordered another 2 donuts.
We figured with all the walking we had just done at the park, 2 donuts per person was the right amount.
And then I started thinking… Geez, maybe I should sign up for a marathon or something and then I’d have a reason to try them all. Ha!
Fact: I have no idea why people buy Dunkin’ Donuts. Why on earth would anyone waste their treat calories on mass produced hockey pucks? Not when there are real, made from scratch donut shops out there.
Bread from Botto’s Bakery? Are you local? Have you tried their bread before? Should we have gotten a loaf?
Anyway, if you are in the area and are looking for coffee and a donut… This is the place. In fact, now that we know The Cookie Jar Pastry Shop existists, I have a feeling we’ll be hanging out in Cape Elizabeth more often.
Playing tourist these past few weeks has been really fun. If you’re from the area, or have been to Southern Maine in the past, we’d love to know your favorite spots! There’s bonus points if food is involved. Especially something sweet. 😉
Have a wonderful day everyone,
~Mavis

If you don’t mind calories, we love getting breakfast & lunch at St. Joe’s in Scarborough. Everything is scratch-made, but it isn’t healthy. I’m in love with their maple turkey sandwich (plenty for two or three to split it). Hubby loves their breakfast biscuits. It’s a hole in the wall place with really great food!
My favorite spot to sit & watch the ocean is at Two Lights Park in Cape Elizabeth. Lots of walking can be done, but we like to bring a sack lunch or breakfast & just listen to the ocean roar. The geography of it is breathtaking.

From our last Maine visit 2 years ago:
2 Fat Cats bakery Portland
Walk off donuts at Rachel Carson Preserve and National Estuarine Center in Wells. They are right next to each other.
Congden’s Donuts in Wells
The ice cream place on the main drag in Kennebunkport with the creative flavors
And my favorite of all time-Dunne’s ice cream in York. Around the corner for Fox”s lobster.
I may have gotten some of these from your blog, which I used as a resource in planning our trip.

Mavis – did you see that listing on 58 New Dam Road, Sanford ME? It looks cute! Has a ton of land with it too (although most is wooded). It just made me think of you as a possibility. Maybe too far inland / south?
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s super cute! The HH doesn’t want a lot of land though.

Every year we camp for a week in Maine. And every year we go to Fort William, it is one of our very favorite places in Maine. There is a food truck there called Bite Into Maine and they make the best lobster rolls. They are pricey but worth every penny!

I’m so glad you loved my suggestions! I love living in Cape Elizabeth because it’s so close to the city and yet it’s very rural. I forgot to mention Kettle Cove Creamery but hopefully you found it on your own. They are owned by C Salt but have a completely different menu and lots of ice cream. You would love it! The Needham ice cream is delicious. Jordan’s Farm on Wells Road is a great stop too. Pretty soon there will be strawberries to pick in Cape too!

Becky’s Diner in Portland! We went there while I was pregnant with my first child and the blueberry pancakes were divine! That was 24 years ago and I still consider them to be the best I have ever had!
