A big thanks to OHAM reader Molly who mentioned Night Moves Bread in Portland, Maine a few weeks ago. The HH and I finally made our way there and HOLY COW MAN… It is the real deal!
Molly had mentioned that she liked to go on fridays because it was when the bakery makes their “bird seed bread”. Worried that they might sell out, we made sure we were there right when the doors opened.
Of course we were there when it opened!! Everyone knows that’s the best time to show up to a bake shop, right? You gotta get there early before all the crazies show up and everything is sold out!
Despite getting there early, we were 5th in line! That’s how you know you’ve found a winner my friends. When you have people lining up at the door, you know it’s going to be good.
The only thing I knew I wanted to try before walking in was the bird seed bread Molly had recommended. But once we were in there it was really hard to decide what to buy.
In the end we settled on a loaf of the {very stout!} bird seed bread {that toasted up nicely!}, one of their morning glory muffins and a chocolate chip cookie with sea salt.
The morning glory muffin was very similar to the ones I make and the muffin was super moist {and filling too. A meal in itself really}. It was fantastic. A 10/10.
And their chocolate chip sea salt cookie was one of the best I’ve ever had. Not too overly sweet and a perfect cookie to enjoy alongside a cuppa.
Basically, Night Moves Bread was a total winner in our book and I’m already looking forward to going back again the next time we are in the area. Well done Molly! You really know how to pick them!
Here’s to a happy and productive weekend. I hope it’s a good one. We’ll just be here… Hanging out {and patiently} waiting to move into our new place.

Portland, ME has two bakeries that just won James Beard Awards, so if you get a chance, I’d recommend you check them out. Atsuko Fujimoto, owner of Norimoto Bakery, took home the national award for “Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.” ZU Bakery won the award for “Outstanding Bakery.”

Ok so totally off topic. But “Night Moves” by Bob Seger just triggered a happy memory for me. Had to play the song. Thank you

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! There are so many great places around it’s hard to stop giving you recommendations. If you are ever on Route 1 in Scarborough after the marsh and right at the turn off for Payne Rd there is a place called On the Vine in an out of place looking big building with a huge parking lot. Plan on spending a long time in there because they have everything. A bakery with things that look too good to taste good (if you know you know) but their stuff actually tastes great. They make all of the bakery items in the basement so you know it’s fresh! They have meat already marinated and ready to take home that is so delicious and a full meat case. I haven’t been there for a while so I’m hoping I get the name right but I think I like the Bourbon marinade the best. They also have a chicken marinaded with lime something or other that always reminded me of your freezer meals. They also have a large specialty food area (amazing for pickity bits) and upstairs is full of kitchen/gift stuff and beer/wine. They have stairs that are kind of hidden near the ice cream freezers or an elevator. It took me a few visits to realize there was an upstairs. I’m not even mentioning everything, you have to check it out.
