On to the fun stuff! Now that we have a new roof on the barn {and it doesn’t leak!} I can begin to set up my studio space. I am SO EXCITED about this!! My weekend plans? You, you guessed it, start setting up my new studio space.
We wouldn’t have bought this home if it didn’t have some sort of additional storage space as the house is very much on the small side. And you know me, I have a few hobbies. 😉
Well, mainly two; rug hooking and gardening. And making ornaments, and recently I’ve gotten into painting again as well. Yada yada yada… All these hobbies needed a room of their own, and now they have one.
We have an electrician scheduled to come out next week to install a bunch of outlets. The HH is having a bunch installed in his space {ground floor} and I plan on having a boatload installed for my level.
I don’t know about you, but I think those high ceilings and cool rustic wood beams need some party lights. Lots and lots of party lights to shine brightly during the long Maine winters.
I am excited!! My new work tables have been ordered and I plan on picking up a half a dozen strands of lights at Costco this weekend.
New spaces are fun. But most of all I’m looking forward to having all the major projects done before the weather turns and it’s time to hunker down. I love Maine and all four of its seasons {five if you count mud season}.
Winter here I come!
How about YOU? What are YOUR weekend plans? Anyone doing anything exciting?
~Mavis

Not to be a downer, but I will be spending the weekend and beyond in the ICU with dh who is battling his 4th bout of pneumonia since February and a newly discovered brain bleed. Few things scare me and I’ll admit the brain bleed only concerns me because our local hospital is a Level One trauma center and we’ve been here so much this year it feels like home. I would appreciate any prayers and good thoughts though.

Dear Jennifer,
Praying for you and your husband for good health, strength, healing, and comfort. Lifting up you and your husband for encouragement and courage during this season, and wisdom for medical team rendering care. Sending virtual hugs to you! Stay strong and take good care of yourself. Remember to hydrate and rest when you can. ❤️

Jennifer, I am so very sorry that your husband has been through so much illness and difficulty, and even more sorry that you have experienced the pain and worry of watching him go through it. I would like to say: hold on and keep focused on how much you love each other. And also: do something kind for yourself when you are home, like having a soothing Epsom salts bath with some essential oil like lavender, which reduces stress. When you are at the hospital, be sure you eat decent meals at the cafeteria so you keep up your strength and have a good cup of coffee or tea. I was with my brother Evan last year for the last two weeks of his life in the hospital, and I ate decent breakfasts and also spent some time doing simple exercises so that I could relieve stress. It really helped me stay calm and patient with him in his room.

My thoughts and prayers to you and your husband. Make sure to take care of the caretaker — this kind of unwelcome stress can be debilitating. Sending you extra hugs, too.

Have followed your adventures for years. Lots of laughs and admiration for your fearlessness. What are you going to use for heat? Maine isn’t exactly known for its balmy winters!
Lana says
Woohoo! Party lights!
Carrie says
I saw the picture and thought maybe you were going to say you were renovating or something.
Is it Insulated? It looks like it would be so cold in the winter!
KC says
Yep, a Maine winter in a barn without insulation does not sound like a rug-hooking paradise; hopefully there’s some good stuff between the siding and the interior!
Beccah says
The plans are volunteer for my child’s preschool fundraiser and take the kids to their swim lessons. But a wildfire broke out just a few miles away so that has me on edge. Waking up to a smokey sunrise in the Portland, OR burbs is not the best way to start the day.
Jeanine says
I’m sure Mavis will have a plan for heat, etc. probably some electric heaters. Also….its kind of dark….maybe HH will insulate and install drywall and paint to brighten it up. Also…refinish the floors. We will enjoy seeing the progress.
J in OH-IO says
What a neat open space for all your creative projects! Can’t wait to see all of the party lights in there as it will add to the fun atmosphere! I like seeing your ideas both decorating & landscaping and wish I had your energy. Have great weekend and enjoy your new place!

Gorgeous work space! Is the barn climate controlled?
Mavis Butterfield says
The barn is controlled by the climate, yes! 🙂
Sue S. says
What. No insulation in the barn?
Dianne says
LOL, that’s funny!
Lynda Rees Kling says
Insulation and heat definitely needed!

Did she ever actually show the whole house and land? i missed it if she did. Unclear what the whole place is like

Wow the barn looks great. How nice that you have a space for your activities and your hubby has his own space too. It sounds like the perfect set up to me.
Elisabeth says
I’m curious about your new work tables. Where did you get them? What kind are they?
Mavis Butterfield says
I ordered some wooden folding tables. I haven’t received them yet though. I’ll share more about them when they get here.

OMG….its gorgeous!!!!! I’m so, so, so excited for you!!! It’s going to be soooooo much fun setting up your dream space in the absolute perfect location! Those beams, that floor!!!! We all dream of a space like that! I’m so happy for you and hello? A two story barn is the coolest thing ever!
Heather N says
Great space, but no insulation?
Kelly says
Mavis,
Can you provide a link to the work tables you ordered, please?
Great barn! Great things to come!

The tables haven’t arrived yet {and I haven’t seen them in person yet} so I’ll wait until I get them to see if I can recommend them. I still have my Husky tables and those are really nice and heavy duty. I have a couple of these tables and they are GREAT! I’ve not been keeping up with your adventures for the past couple of months and I was unaware that you have moved. I need to visit the blog more often.
Sue says
What a great space! Those wide floor boards are swoonworthy!
Hope you’ll tell us more about the finish work! I’m guessing:
– heat pump for heating/cooling on both floors
-insulation and wall covering (Maine white pine)
– Sanding/polyurethaning the floor?
