The smoke detectors here at the new place are super sensitive. Which is a good thing, but 9 times out of 10 when I make toast, I set off at least one smoke detector. Which is both funny and annoying.
Well, annoying to the HH that is. I’ve just decided it’s the sound that means breakfast is ready. 😉
Toast. The HH and I both have differing opinions on when toast is “ready”. If I make toast and he’s in the kitchen, it’s this big ordeal. He hovers over the toaster, consistently pressing down on the knob to check the toast. It makes me CRAZY.
Sometimes I have to leave the room.
So when I spotted this toast sign outside of a bakery on our trip to England, I had to snap a photo and send it to him. He thought it was funny. But then I was like, NO… Seriously, tell me which one is YOUR ideal piece of toast!! Because you know, after being married for 30 years, there’s still so much to learn. 😉
Hats off to the person that created this sign. Because now I know.
~Mavis
P.S. How do you prefer YOUR toast? Slightly toasted, or seriously toasted {because it needs to hold up to loads of butter and jam}? Curious minds want to know.
Brianna says
I am a 3×3 on the toast chart (3row, 3 column). Golden brown all over and crispy enough and just starting a hint of darkness. I eat my toast dry or occasionally with a light amount of butter. My kids eat toast with jam in our house as a snack.
Elaine says
I’m a 14 or 15 with plenty of butter! I would definitely eat a 16 too with no problem!!
Erin says
The smoke detectors in our place are sensitive like this & it drives me batty. I even start swinging my towel at it right when I start the toaster, as well as having all the kitchen fans on, hoping to avoid the piercing squeals.
I like my toast like row 3, 4th on the right. I can even go to row 4, 1st on the left. I have to eat gluten free bread & a good, solid toasting is required to make it more palatable. There’s a good GF bakery near me that has almost normal tasting bread but it’s $15/loaf & I just can’t fork that over. Maybe as a birthday treat to myself or something. They’re worth the effort & time they put into it, but my brain can’t get around that base cost. I need to find a good recipe to make myself that doesn’t basically just bake up a loaf of rice lol

We live in our RV and even heating the water kettle will set off the smoke detector. It is becoming a habit to take it down before starting to cook anything!
Rosemary says
#8, 9 or 10. In a previous house we lived in, the smoke detector was close to the kitchen. Whenever it went off, it meant dinner was ready! 🙂
Virginia says
That’s a great chart. I’m close to your HH at about #8. Funny, the entire last row looks burnt to me.
Tammy says
I’m a 10 or 11.
When my mother-in-law was growing up, her mother burnt her own toast on purpose so she would have something to eat. Apparently that didn’t work because my mother-in-law just grew to like burnt toast and she makes hers burnt on purpose, all these years later.
Rebeka says
Ranges from 8-12.
Dawn says
11 or 12 are my preferred level of toast. I cannot do burnt toast.
Ranee says
I’m a 12, I would say. Also, we got that same chart with the last toaster I purchased. I had not seen that before and thought it rather humorous. Our smoke detectors are terribly sensitive and drive me batty. Worse than that, once they start screaming, a voice comes on that tells us to evacuate the building. I don’t know what’s worse – the screaming or the disembodied voice. Ugh!.
Marianne says
Anywhere between 12-15 (and I only say 15 cause I will eat it rather than starting again)Mar
Amy Hooper says
9, 10 or 11. Anything after that goes in the trash
Ramona says
I’m 11 or 12, with butter spread to the edges. Always bugged me when eating out toast came with butter blobbed in the middle.
Rita says
I’m a 9. I don’t like hard toast.
Linda says
5-10 works for me. The bottom row is burned!
Margo says
I use gluten free bread which can be difficult to get to toast properly. Usually needs more than one toasting. Comes out of the toaster the first time like a 3, and if you’re not careful, ends up like a 15! When my kids were young, they would wait for the smoke detector to scream whenever I made garlic bread. As soon as one of them heard it, they’d yell to the others, “dinner’s ready”!
Kelly Jo says
#12 is ideal for me!
Kathy in PA says
When I read about your smoke alarm going off when making toast, I had to laugh because that just happened to me this morning. I prefer #12 but will scrape off the dark sections when the toast falls in to the 13-15 range.
Tamara says
Does Lucy not go bananas when the alarm goes off? Our dog has serious issues with the piercing smoke alarm and is distraught long after it stops. She also does not like my husband using the cast iron skillet and runs to the farthest point in the house and trembles. Which is funny, because when I use the skillet she is my shadow.
Kari says
My dog also goes crazy when the detectors even chirp with a low battery. She will almost tear down a door to get to us for safety. She will shake violently for quite some time afterward. It breaks my heart.
Sue in SoCal says
I’m team HH. Anything in the bottom row I have to scrape off the top burned bits.
debbie in alaska says
I’m 11 … 12 at the most! Anything beyond that is sad face to me and I’m scraping.
Kim says
I am a 9, my hh said he is a 7! Suprised me because he eats 13 -16 pretty regularly. My toaster is pretty random.
Laura says
Either 10 or 11 are perfect for me.
Juudit Hakala says
Firmly a 15 here with butter covering the bread entirely to all edges. My husband is a vanilla toast 3-4 at best and I wonder why he bothers…
Dawn says
Anywhere from 9 to 11!
Julie says
Me too!
Linda Sand says
I’m going to say #11. I like mine lightly toasted but all the way to the edges so the other lightly toasted ones don’t quite make the grade. Anything beyond #11 is likely to taste burnt to me and I don’t like burnt anything.
Maria says
11.5
Sue S. says
I like mine at #11. Just happens that’s my lucky number. And warm enough to melt the butter. Maybe you can share why the Brits eat theirs from a toast rack on the table. It must be cold by the time they eat it?
Mavis Butterfield says
It indeed cold by the time you eat it. 🙁
Rj says
LOVE the picture!!! Hubs prefers the top row, while 13,14, and 15 are perfect for me! I find it gives white bread some flavor and CRUNCH! Yes, pass the REAL butter and preserves!!!!!
Mark says
I just like it warm enough to start melting my peanut butter. So I’m a 3 or 4
Holley says
I’m a 3 or 4. I like it toasted just enough that it melts the butter!
Dianne Labadie says
Team Mavis
I am a “12”. My HH prefers “5-6”. He thinks mine looks burnt.
Paula says
My husband is anywhere from a 1-3.
Michelle says
8 or 9
Any more and the toast go out the birds!
Barbara says
10, 11 or 12
Pamela Sheppard says
Literally anywhere between 3 and 13 depending on the day. Sometimes I like it barely tan but warm enough to melt the butter. Other times I like some of the edges to be black.
Gwenn says
11.5 for sure, my ocd makes me keep flipping it for an even toast
Tracy T says
9 all the way
Heather says
I’m with team HH on this one…however, MY husband would be with you. He likes his darker and firmer. We’ve given up and just make our own these days to avoid the argument, lol.
Mary Keen says
Too funny on the smoke alarms because I know it is okay when I cook if a Smoke Alarm Goes OFF. It is a normal day. One day the alarm was going off, I was making dinner, Husband runs in all panicked. I was in the kitchen with my 5 dogs, and we were happy, and cooking and I turn around and said WHAT!!! This is normal. Even the dogs looked up and wondered what the fuss was.
Cathy says
#12-
I’ll take the toast out half way and butter it then toast until crunchy. The butter gets toasted too and it’s yummy.
Best done in a toaster oven thou.
Love toast!
Torry says
I prefer 9 or 11. Ten has too much white, so I would put it back down! I will scrape toast before eating burnt toast. I think toasters today are really unreliable in how they toast from time to time. I wish I had the one from my early childhood.
