Last month I went to the The History of Maine Rug Hooking Exhibit at the Brick Store Museum. While I was there I noticed there was a class on how to make a no glue wooley wreath so I decided to sign up and give it a whirl.
I had seen the wool wreaths before online, and since my friend Lisanne Miller of W. Cushing Company was the instructor, I knew I’d have a good time. And I did!
Not only was the no glue wooley wreath super easy to make, now that I know how to make them, I think I might make a few more smaller ones to hang on the back of my kitchen chairs for the holidays.
Supplies
{2} 6” x 54” lengths of wool
{1} Wire wreath form {I used a 12” form}
Scissors
Ribbon
Did I mention how easy these wreaths are to make? To make one simply fold a 6” x 54” piece of wool in half {lengthwise}. Then using your scissors, cut the wool towards the center of the fold {see above photo} leaving about ¾” of the wool uncut.
Once you’ve made your cuts all the way down the center of the length of wool, set that piece aside.
Grab another {contrasting} color of wool and do the same thing again.
Once you have both colors of wool cut, tie the ends to the frame.
Lay the wool strips on top of each other flat on a table and then roll them up {like a jelly roll} towards the top of the wire frame.
Holding the wire frame in one hand, and the wool {jelly roll} in the other, slowly wrap the wool around the wire frame overlapping the section behind you a bit as you go.
Keep wrapping the wool around the wire frame until you’ve come to the end of your length of wool. Once you get to the end, tie the ends to the frame {just like you did at the beginning}.
Cover the ends with a ribbon. {I chose to use rug binding tape as my ribbon for a more primitive look}.
And there you have it. A simple no glue wooley wreath. I love how mine turned out! My first handmade decoration of the holiday season.
Keep Calm and Craft On.

Wonder if this might work with fabric? I’ve got lots of that. Might have to give it a go. Love the look you achieved with the wool.

Love this! Where do you buy those frames?

Very neat! It ties in with your love of hooking very well. I wonder if it is doable with a wire coat hanger and fabric for a frugal one.
