We woke up to a dusting of snow the other day and I can’t even tell you how happy that made me. I LOVE the snow {and the cold temps, and the slowdown that all of that brings}.
It finally feels like winter here in Maine. And now that the lobster house is totally decorated… It feels like Christmas too! In October we were the bat house, now we’re the lobster house. All these kooky decorations, it’s pretty hilarious if you ask me.
A lot of work went into putting up this year’s Christmas decorations. More so than any other year I can think of. And it was SO MUCH fun seeing everything come together.
My mother in law was on bow duty. She scoured three stores to find just the right ones for the various wreaths and fence posts, and then she fluffed them all up for us.
The HH and my father in law were on lobster duty. There were no linemen this time around to hang the cutouts up high, so the HH had to get up on a ladder and hang them all.
Originally we had planned on having a giant 5 foot lobster above the top window, but the HH said it was too awkward and heavy to get up on the ladder with it so we went with a 3 footer instead.
If only we had a cherry picker. We could turn pro.
We also hung over 200 feet of fresh garland. It was nuts I tell you, just nuts. It was so cold outside that we had to keep going back inside to warm our hands.
The place looks pretty festive, don’t you think? I mean, maybe most people wouldn’t hang a bunch of lobsters on their house for Christmas… But when you live in Maine, it’s probably kind of normal.
Or maybe not. Maybe I’m the crazy one. Who knows.
Ho Ho Ho.
Merry Christmas!
I may have gone a little crazy with the buoys. We ended up painting 29 of them. They’re kind of like potato chips… You can’t have just one.
I think I like the red white and green swirly ones the best.
Christmas in Maine… We do things a little differently here.
Have a great week everyone, try and stay out of trouble.

We had a ’79 Toyata Landcruiser and it was great for dune riding. Not so comfortable for a longer road trip. Looks like a picture perfect holiday house. Has anyone notified Yankee Magazine? This should be in next year’s holiday issue. We’ll done Mavis and HH. Thanks for sharing

Your adventurous attitude is so refreshing and inspiring! What fun! Love how you included your family in the project. They must have had a blast. (Reminds me of how you included your friends and neighbors in the freezer meal project years ago back in the PNW)

Wow! Unusual but it looks fab! Suited to the area. I thought at first glance you had a Land Rover Defender long wheel base but realised it was something else before I read the comments I’m sure it’s a more comfortable ride than a Defender would be though my husband would kill for one of the last ones made

Mavis, that is THE most unique Christmas house!! How wonderful!! My Grandparents used to go beachcombing in Maine in the ’60s and ’70s. My Grandfather had retired and turned the former stables into his “museum”. He displayed the wood lobster trap buoys they found and a myriad of antiques he would buy at barn sales in upstate NY. One year my Nana ordered a wood lobster trap for him for Christmas. It was waiting at the back door when Nana climbed the steps. Before Granddaddy could return from the barn where they parked, she somehow managed to drag it into the house and upstairs into a guest room to hide!! I wish I had been there when she surprised him!
