I seem to be on an avocado kick lately. I’m not sure how it started but there have been a couple of times over the past few weeks that I’ve found myself with more ripe avocados than I could eat. So I decided to do a little experimenting and find out the best way to freeze avocados.
In the past when I’ve come across a deal on avocados, or had more ripe ones that we could eat before they spoiled, I simply made guacamole and froze it in zip baggies.
How to Freeze Guacamole
The process is simple enough… Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, scoop out the “meat” of the avocado into a bowl, smash it up, add a little salt and pepper, lime juice and you’re good to go. Basically it’s the same method you would use to make a regular batch of gucamole.
The past few times I’ve frozen guacamole though, I’ve used flexible ice cube trays rather than zip baggies. I simply whip up a batch of guacamole and then spoon it into the ice cube trays. I then carefully place the ice cube tray in a gallon size freezer bag and store it in the freezer that way.
I am a BIG fan of avocado toast and 1 ice cube sized portion is the perfect amount on a single slice of toast {in my opinion}.
I also like that depending on what I want to use the guacamole for {toast, tacos, nachos} I can just grab what I need.
Thawing the cubes of guacamole is easy too. I either set a few cubes out on a plate while I’m gathering up the other ingredients to prepare our meal {20 minutes on a plate seems to do the trick} or give the cubes a quick zap in the microwave.
Guacamole on demand… What a treat!
How To Freeze Avocado Slices
I recently tried freezing avocado slices. To do that I placed avocado slices on a cookie sheet, brushed both sides with lime juice and then popped the cookie sheet in the freezer until the avocado slices were firm.
Then I tossed the slices in a zip baggie. When I was ready to use the avocado slices I thawed them out {this time, they only took a few minutes to thaw} and used them in a salad.
The taste, texture and color of the avocados were still really good.
How To Freeze Avocado Halves
I used the same method for freezing avocado halves. I pitted the avocados, brushed the halves with lime juice, placed them on a cookie sheet and froze them. I even tried wrapping a few frozen halves in plastic wrap to prevent browning, but it didn’t seem to matter either way.
When I thawed the avocado halves though, the taste and texture was a bit off. To me, the taste wasn’t as good as the frozen guacamole or the avocado slices.
How To Freeze Whole Avocados
I also read online that you could freeze whole, ripe avocados by simply wrapping them in plastic wrap and placing them in a freezer bag. I was skeptical, but I gave it a try anyway.
This was a mistake. Yes, it can be done, but the taste and texture was way off. So off that after we tasted the previously frozen, thawed avocados, we tossed the rest of them in the garbage. They were that bad.
I do not recommend freezing whole avocados. Not at all.
Before going into the freezer.
5 days after being in the freezer on a cookie sheet. {I forgot they were in there!!}.
Have you ever tried freezing avocados before? What is the best way to freeze avocados in your opinion?
I prefer them frozen in guacamole or sliced form. Although fresh is always best, it’s nice to know I have a bag of guacamole cubes waiting for me in the freezer anytime I get a craving. 😉

Curious- did you brush with lime juice both sides of the sliced avacado before freezing or just brush the top side?
In the frozen cube form – do if you put in lime, salt, pepper or just plain avacado? Do you store in the cubes with a freeer bag over the cube tray or freeze the cubes then transfer cubes to a freezer bag?
I like the ice cube idea to take out portions when needed. Thanks for experimenting and sharing the results!

Yes! I brushed both sides of the slices with lime juice.
For the guacamole cubes I add all the things, scoop it into the tray and pop it in a gallon sized freezer bag and store it that way. 🙂

Thank you! Love avocados and haven’t tried freezing! Great tips and like seeing pics!

I only recently learned that ripe avocados can be held in the fridge to keep them from going bad. So it’s very handy to learn the results of your freezing experiments, Mavis. Thank you!

There’s a TikTok thing going around where you can store a cut avocado in a glass of water and it won’t go dark. Well, it’s true, but there was just a warning sent out on allrecipes.com that doing so can actually allow listeria or e coli to grow, so it can make you sick. So as for the *refrigerator*, don’t do the glass of water trick!

Thank you for your experiment results Mavis. Very useful information.

What a great topic and idea
I confess I’ve thrown out more avocado s because they were over ripe. I’m going to give this a try.

Just finished freezing 60. They were $ .25 each at Aldi. I’ve frozen for years just cutting in half, pitting, remove shell, then freeze on cookie sheet. Once frozen pop into smaller sized freezer safe zip lock bags. Easy to pull one or two out at a time. Perfect for toast, tacos, whatever.

$0.25 is a steal!!!

This is a very timely post for me! I was just about to run my own experiments. Our Aldi sometimes carries frozen chunked avocado, but it’s very hit or miss on whether or not it’s in stock…so I was about to give it a whirl for when I find a good deal on fresh avocado. Thanks for the insight!
