Today was the first time I had ever made spicy black-eyed peas, or at least I think it was. To put it simply this recipe was a freakin’ home run. If it hadn’t been for my recent trip to Winco, or Mrs. Hillbilly calling me for the second year in a row on New Year’s Eve wanting to know if I had any black-eyed peas, I don’t think I would have ever purchased them.
I’m not sure if it was the beans or the bacon, but I found myself shoveling spoonfuls of this stuff into my mouth. So watch out. You may just find yourself standing over your sink doing the same thing if you make this yummy recipe.

Spicy Black-Eyed Peas Recipe
Ingredients
5 slices bacon
1 medium onion, chopped
1 pound dried black-eyed peas, washed
12-ounce can diced tomatoes and green chiles
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 1/2 cups water
Instructions
In a heavy saucepan or deep skillet, fry the bacon until nice and crisp. Remove the bacon from the pan, chop, and set aside for later. DO NOT SAMPLE BACON.
Saute the chopped onion in the bacon drippings until translucent. Add the peas, tomatoes, salt pepper, chili powder and water. Cover and cook over medium – low heat for 1 hour, or until the peas are tender and the liquid is absorbed. Garnish with bacon.

If you liked that, then you may like a similar recipe. Hoppin’ John is a traditional Southern recipe enjoyed by many, especially on New Year’s Day. Here is a link to a recipe for Hoppin’ John found at the Food Network site.

What do black-eyed peas taste like….like a bean…..like a pea….cross between the two? — if more like a bean, I’m down.
Mavis says
I think they taste more like a bean, and there is BACON in there LaToya. BACON!!!!
LaToya says
I think I might try this…..if not, maybe I’ll just make (and eat) some bacon 😉

These peas have an “earthy” taste in my opinion. I do like them a lot. I’m making mine with a ham bone but the jalapenos are a good idea. I froze a lot of jalapenos from the summer (neighbor planted 5 bushes of them – go figure.) Yes the stores are always out of the bags of peas right at New Year’s so buy them a couple of months beforehand.

Black eyed peas are my absolute favorite!! My mom and grandma grow them in their gardens every year and are always so nice to share with me. Some day I hope to have a large enough garden to be able to grow them. Fresh BEPs are even better, so if you ever have a chance to get some, don’t hesitate!! Or maybe you could incorporate them into your garden. They can be a pain to snap, but it is WELL WORTH IT!
