What a waste of food…The chickens would have loved the salad greens, Rowdy our dog the meat…and those eggs. I might have to find a big city and unleash the grandson and Mrs. H on their dumpsters.

When we had pet rabbits, we asked the local grocery if we could have/buy the produce it throws out, & we were told it’s against store policy out of fear someone would eat it & get sick & sue. 2 months later they started donating it to the local rabbit rescue.
It’s sad that some people have created an environment where others are so afraid of a lawsuit that they refuse to help others. I hope that this movie will change some minds on waste.

I agree Kathy. I’ve gone dumpster diving too but now they actually lock the dumpsters for fear that someone will sue them if they get food poisoning or something. Kind of sad. 🙁

I came across an online group years ago Dumpster Divers…I was blown away by what they were finding…GOOD FOOD. Perfectly fine food…just thrown away. I was tempted to try it a few times…but my hubby was NOT down with it at ALL. I’d totally go with you Mavis…I may need to move closer…:)
Can’t wait to see this movie…it looks intriguing…have you seen Food Matters? Excellent documentary…

I think a lot of food is wasted that should be donated. I’m not sure that I could eat it after it’s been in the dumpster though. If it could be donated rather than thrown away that would be best.

I live in a rural area, which makes it nearly impossible to play the coupon game, but after we got goats I asked the produce manager at the local grocery if we could buy scrap boxes of produce, and they were happy to oblige. They sell a banana box worth of stuff for $1. Sometimes it is a bunch of lettuce or cabbage leaves (with a couple of random things thrown in), and sometimes I’ve had enough to make a gallon of fresh salsa out of the tomatoes that just had a little bad spot in them that was easily cut out. Sometimes I have to wade through gross stuff, but for the chance to add some fresh veggies to my family’s diet, I do it gladly (and hands wash!). And the goats love the leftovers. 🙂 Right now I have a bunch of bell peppers that are ready to be cut up and frozen for fajitas…. Just short of dumpster diving, but very productive.
