Have you thought about your fall garden yet? This year I will be growing broccoli raab again. Why? Because it’s freakin’ delicious that’s why. 😉 I don’t even really like broccoli, but broccoli raab? Oh heck ya, bring it on.
Brief description:Â Broccoli raab is also known as asparagus broccoli, broccoletto, rapini, or rabe, . Â It is grown for it’s asparagus-like shoots. Â It can be used in salads and vegetable dishes or it can stand alone.
Where to Plant Broccoli Raab:Â In a sunny location {though it will tolerate partial shade, but with lower yields}. Â Plant in raised beds, containers, or garden beds.
Planting Seeds:Â Â Plant seeds 1/8″ deep. Â Thin to 1 every 4-6″ {or one per pot} when seedlings are about 2″ tall.
Growing Tips: Â Broccoli raab uses up quite a bit of nitrogen, so regular fertilizing is best. Â Manure and/or compost soil conditioners also help yields considerably. Â Requires moderate, but consistent watering.
How to Harvest: Â When plant reaches about 1 foot high, harvest buds and leaves just under buds with scissors.
Prep Tip:Â Broccoli raab has a stronger taste than regular broccoli. Â If the taste is too strong, you can tame it down considerable by blanching it. Â {Blanch for 2-3 minutes in heavily salted water.}
Are you ready to start your garden but you’re not sure when you should plant your seeds or set out your transplants? Head on over HERE and you’ll be taken to a handy dandy chart that is broken down into what vegetables should be planted {or transplanted} each month in your area.
Anyone can do this. Dirt + Seeds+ Water = Food!

Gardening books hold kind of a special place in my heart. I wouldn’t be the gardener I am today {or maybe not a gardener at all} if it weren’t for a few gardening books I picked up years ago. I spent almost the entire winter of 2008/2009 reading up on gardening. I found some incredible reads that taught me so much and made me realize how much I didn’t know. So I’ve never stopped reading gardening books.
Here are just a few of my favorites, although if we’re being honest, narrowing this list down was virtually impossible. Gardening books are right up there with the bible {okay, not quite, but you get the idea!}.
My Favorite Garden Books:
- Carrots Love Tomatoes: Secrets of Companion Planting
- The Complete Compost Gardening Guide
- Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre
- Sugar Snaps and StrawberriesÂ
- The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food
- The Kitchen Gardener’s Handbook

We saute our broccoli raab with fresh garlic and oil. It’s so yummy that way!

That’s how my Family likes it too.

Your clean microwave comment brought a chuckle. Years ago, my father picked up a microwave that belonged to an eccentric neighbor lady. It wasn’t working and she needed it repaired. He was disgusted by what the interior looked like. My parents were not about to take the microwave in looking like that. They cleaned it and the microwave miraculously started working again. I don’t know what they told the neighbor about the repair…

Ha! That’s so funny!
Heidi says
Hi Mavis, is this the same thing as purple sprouting broccoli? I’m browning that in my winter garden, but hadn’t heard of raab.
Heidi says
Again, I proofread after hitting submit. I am growing it, not browning it. Sorry for messing up the comments section.
