Lucy and I worked in the garden this morning spiffing up the walkway outside of the chicken coop. As you can see she is a big help. It’s pretty much 3 steps forward, 2 steps back when any sort of planting goes on, but she loves being outside, and I love having her out there.
I pulled up all of the Swiss chard that over wintered in the garden boxes and brought it around back to plant. My goal is to fill the garden area in front of the chicken coop / run with oodles and oodles of kale and Swiss chard for the hens to snack on all summer.
The kale and Swiss chard transplants that I set out last week are holding up great despite the rain and chilly temps.
While I was at the Home Depot yesterday picking up supplies for my latest project {just wait until you see it, it is going to be SO COOL}, I wandered over to the nursery section and spotted a table full of hosta plants.
I’m not really into variegated plants, and I had already placed some solid green hostas in my cart, but each time I would pass by the green and white hostas, they would state at me. Like they were giving me the evil eye or something.
It was eerie.
I’m not really sure what my issue with variegated plants is {to much color on one leaf?} but in the end I finally broke down and bought the more colorful hostas instead.
I still can’t believe I put the solid green leafed hostas back. They were so pretty. So uniform, and so perfect looking.
So now I have neon orange bark, green and white hostas and rainbow Swiss chard all in close proximity of each other. Let’s just hope I’ll be able to handle all the color a few months from now when I’ll be too busy with other things to change it.
Hopefully it will all come together in the end and look great once the plants mature.
Now, if Lucy could just convince those chickens that she just wants to be their friend, everything would be perfect.
Peace Out Girl Scouts, I’m off to make dinner.

Did you have the vet chip Lucy? If not, ask the vet about it.
Mavis says
Not yet. I was thinking about the chip rather than a collar though. I plan on asking the next time we go in for her shots.

The colors are a reflection of your inner wild woman (yep, I lean towards New Age stuff). I think you will love them once you see how it all works together.
That photo of Lucy and the chicken is priceless!

Hostas are an excellent choice. I inherited a couple of beds of hostas and over the years have transplanted them all over the place. Will tell you the more mulch …the better.

DH took yesterday off and we spent a few hours spiffing up, too. Ripped out all the dead stuff from the herb area and cleaned out some of the flower beds.
We have quite a bit of sage, cilantro and chives already growing. Hubby got out the chipper (really good investment for us) and turned all that brush into one small heap of bark.
All of those bulbs we planted last fall from the Lowe’s deal are about 6″ tall. They are going to look AWESOME!!!
It was 63 degrees and sunny all day. A BEAUTIFUL day in the neighborhood! 🙂
Mavis says
Wow Susan, you have been busy. We have a few daffodils blooming but I am patiently waiting for the tulips! 🙂 Sounds like you are enjoying spring. 🙂

I’m so jealous. We’ll have snow on the ground here for at least another month.

Love Lucy..she is getting so big! What a great garden companion she is! Now if only she spoke “Chicken” , she could have a whole new FLock of friends.. =)
Happy Gardening Mavis
Susan Reid says
Hi Mavis, just wondering if you have any trouble with slugs and snails eating all the new seedlinglings you are planting? If so, what do you use to deter them?
Mavis says
Shhhhh! So far so go. The only thing I do to repel slugs is pick them up and put them in a salt bucket when I see them.
Susan Reid says
Oh…what is a salt bucket? We tend to catch them with Beer ( what else!) in Australia.
Mavis says
🙂 Just an old bucket I put about 1 inch of salt in, and then toss slugs into. It gets pretty gross by the end of summer. Nothing fancy. I tried the beer thign last year too.
