The period between Halloween and Christmas is pretty much a 2 month long sugar-fest. Sometimes I need a nice healthy snack to nibble on and to pack in lunches.
These apple chips are the perfect solution {plus you know what they say about an apple a day…}. As a bonus it’s apple season, so scoring a killer deal on a box or two of apples is pretty easy.
The only labor intensive part is the peeling/coring, but it’s so worth it. Apple chips are a hot commodity around here and don’t last long.
Ingredients
6-8 large apples {I like to use Fuji or Honeycrisp}
2 tablespoons lemon juice
6 cups water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar
Directions
Wash, peel, core and slice apples about 1/4 inch thick. Mix lemon juice and water and soak apples to help prevent browning. Remove apples from liquid, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, and place on dehydrator trays. Dehydrate about 6 hours at 135 degrees {check your dehydrator’s directions for more accurate time}. Let apples cool for about 30 minutes before bagging them up. Enjoy!

I Love this idea! But I Need another appliance like a hole in the head…
My oven has super low settings (I use it at 100 for rising bread all the time). Do you know anything about dehydrating in an oven? I could get mine to 135 easily, and I have cooling racks that could hold the food pieces. But no fan. Does the dehydrator have a fan?

I’ve used an oven to dry Apple slices and it is very easy. Just place sliced apples on a metal cooling rack and leave in a 135-140 degree oven took dry. normally just a couple of hours. Leave in till crisp l if you want apple chips.

How long would you leave them if you wanted them crispy?
kate says
We make these all the time. I let them go for about 8-9 hours until they are really crispy and store them in the freezer. I’m a chip lover so fresh out of the freezer is perfect.

Mavis-
What is the dehydrator you have?
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Joye,
I have two Nesco dehydrators. Here are the links –> Nesco FD-37A American Harvest Food Dehydrator and Nesco FD-60 Snackmaster Express 4-Tray Food Dehydrator

We love dehydrated apples too but i have a low maintainance way to make them. I use an apple peeler and corer in one. I held out many years before i got one becuase i dont like appliances with only one function but the time savings are huge. Since the apples are going to brown anyway due to the cinnamon, i skip the step about soaking in lemon juice. The lemon juice adds a bit og a tang which is nice when they arent covered in cinnamon.

Mavis, you need to get the potato/apple corer/slicer you have a link for–awesome for making apple chips!!
