Is it really Wednesday already? This week is going by so fast I can’t believe it. Yesterday I did something I’ve never done before. Scrapbooked. Holy cow was it overwhelming.
A bunch of Mom’s from my daughters team got together and I think in the 2+ hours that I was there, I only finished 2 pages. Is that normal? Because at this rate I should be done with The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird’s book by next summer.
So if you have any suggestions on how to make things go quicker, or if you have any scrapbooking pointers, I’d love to hear them.

I haven’t had a chance to scrapbook for a long time, but when I did it would take me a long time, too. I don’t know if it was my indecisiveness, need for balance on the pages, or the glasses of wine, but I was always very slow. I enjoyed it though!

That was good time! I would guess you did a nice job on each page, and that takes a lot of time. It takes months and months to make an entire book, unless it’s just thrown together, and then you may as well just have a photo album! Part of the fun is shopping for the stickers, letters, papers, etc. I am in the process of making one for a European year I had when I was 13. I got papers for each country, and little accessories for them all. Now, if my handwriting was better for the captions….
My daughter and I just bought two grab-bags from a store filled with scrapbooking supplies! Hers was better.

Though they don’t look as crafty as the time-intensive scrapbooks, I can get a photo album done in a few days. First, I decide what the album will be about (a trip, a person, a specific span of time), then I gather all relevant photos and memorabilia. I roughly sort the items into the order I want them to be in the book, then I crop everything into a shape that most accentuates the focus of the picture. Sometimes this means just rounding some corners, but a lot of the time I end up cutting the photos into circles or ovals (Creative Memories has an awesome cropping system that makes this easy and precise).
By cropping the pictures beforehand, I think I save a lot of time because the layout of the pages falls naturally into place. Lastly, I paste the photos into the scrapbook, leaving enough room around them to write in details and stories. I don’t use pretty scrapbooking papers for backgrounds, as they take a ton of time to cut and lay out. Instead, I put all the photos in first, then go back through and journal everything I want to remember, including names, dates, and anecdotes. I make it a little fancy by putting stickers, die-cuts, and doodles in all the blank spaces, then slip on some page covers and I’m done.
My albums look a little spare compared to those of my relatives (all great ladies, most with dedicated scrapbooking desks or even rooms!), but they spark memories and draw the attention to the pictures and stories, rather than cute paper designs or artistic lettering. Plus, by getting the scrapbooks done quickly, I ensure that my memory is fresh and I can record the best parts of my life, rather than worry about who was where or when I did what. 😉

I have a Cricut cutting machine. I love it for scrapping! It cuts things so well and since I already spent money on the machine, I don’t spend much on buying lettering, stickers, etc. It makes things go quicker, IMO.
I try (though it doesnt always look good so I go with less) to get four photos on a 12×12 page with some do-dads here and there with a nice background. I find that when I focus on the four photos and enough space for journal entries, it takes less time. When I focus on the do-dads too much, it takes much longer. Though it still takes time! I think you get faster as you get the hang of it and your style of scrapping, too.

I did scrapbooking for years and when I look back at them now I remember how much fun it was getting creative and they look great, but you do have to buy all “the stuff” and it takes time. Now I’m more into creating photo books online instead. You can choose the option to create the pages yourself and it’s fun. I just completed my best one yet, it was for my daughter’s junior year of high school – I’ve done a photo book for her each year of high school.

It takes a longtime, keep at it with friend. The best way to get it done. My daughters were very athletic and I made them each a Hugh school book, with all their articles, memorabilia, awards, dances, etc. Till this day, they still come home from college and show them off to visiting friends. So worth it, which reminds me, I’ve got to get going on the one in high school now! What a nice gift for your daughter!

Look up Project Life on Amazon. It’s not traditional Scrapbooking, but you buy sheets with different pockets and you can buy different kits to put albums together. They’re normally used to document everyday life, but you can use them any way you want. And you could probably get quite a few years done this way!
