Ok so happy Wednesday to y’all too! This mornin in my garden looks like I’m baking a cake instead of gardening. I have discovered ANTS! Like a ton of ants everywhere and luckily I haven’t planted too many things for them to get into yet but I’ve read cornmeal will make ’em explode & cinnamon will make ’em move out…thus the cake look lol. I know ants and aphids are friends and I really don’t want either. Also I’d hate to dig into a fire ant bed. Ouch. And not to mention the kids get into them or the dog, ya know? So my question is do you know any tips on getting rid of ants? Or know if my cinnamon/cornmeal will do the trick? On top of that we also have ground moles on occasion. Wonder if the cinnamon will deter them also?

I find the ant hill and pour boiling water in it. That’s been effective for me. I only do it when the ants are a problem — don’t necessarily want to kill something in the “food chain.” I’ve also sprinkled black pepper as a barrier the ants won’t cross and laid out cucumber slices as a deterrent. If they do get in the house, I “get” them by making a big ring of masking tape and then pressing the ants to the masking tape — creates a nice, easy way to get rid of them in the house. Good luck!

Cinnamon works great as a barrier for ants (don’t think it actually kills them, but they won’t cross it!)
I use it around the foundation of my house to keep them from coming in. It’s great if you have pets!
You do have to re-apply it occasionally if it’s rainy or windy, but it’s pretty inexpensive compared to other methods.

Sarah, I don’t know if cinnamon will deter ants or moles but it is safe in case your dog gets into it.
