I woke up this morning and could totally tell that fall was in the air. My nose was cold {weirdo, I know, but my nose always gets cold first} and it felt like a jeans and long sleeve sort of day. I decided that since I was going to pull out the winter clothes, I might as well store the summer ones at the same time. {I like my closet to be full of only the stuff I wear daily, the rest I store up top to eliminate clutter, dust, and wear and tear.}
Kind of like last spring when I stored all of my winter wear, I always start out by washing everything. It helps to kill any potential mold or critters that might like to overwinter in my clothes. I don’t store short sleeve shirts, but I do pack away the tanks and shorts. I start by folding them, smoothing as I go, so that I don’t have to iron everything come summer. Then, I put them into the same storage bins that I used for my winter clothes. {You can also use space saver bags.} Either way, they are a one time investment. I toss in a couple of cedar chips, just to deter the critters, and then throw the whole bin on the top shelf of the closet.
Then, all I have are the clothes that I will wear everyday for the next 6 months {eh…that makes it feel like a long winter already}. When it is time to pull them down, it’s like shopping in my own closet.
I totally forgot to mention, doing this each season gives me a chance to purge some of those items I didn’t wear all summer. It’s like a built-in de-cluttering process. I toss some into the bin to store, and some into a bag to take to the Goodwill. Everybody wins, I tell ya.
Here’s to sweaters, hot tea, cool days, cold nights, crackling fires, and neat and tidy closets,
Mavis
