Yesterday, I pulled about 300 strawberry plants out of the two raised garden beds they’ve been growing in for the last 3 years. Do I recommend transplanting strawberry plants in January? No. But these berries were sitting on some prime real estate and needed to be relocated asap.
If I am serious about reaching my goal of growing 2,000 lbs of fruits and veggies in the backyard this summer, I am not going to waste any of my raised garden bed space on strawberries. Especially since the juicy red berries have always been considered a snack food item from the pack of chipmunks that roam around my garden all summer long. I swear Chippy the chipmunk and his crew must eat about half my berries every stinkin summer.
So for now, the strawberries have been move to the side of the house and will be considered “decorative berries.” If I get any, great. If not, I’ll feel better knowing I haven’t wasted any valuable space in the garden growing food for the neighborhood wildlife.
The other reason I needed to move the strawberry plants…
The compost for the raised garden beds arrived this morning. Hot Diggety Dog! Now I need to head outside to start shoveling dirt like a mad woman. If I don’t get it out of the driveway before the HH gets home I’m going to be in big trouble. He doesn’t even know I ordered it. He He He… Never mind that it’s like 31 degrees outside, I’ll just have to throw on some snow pants and a hat.
Wish me luck!
P.S. Any donations of pain relievers would be much appreciated at this time. Ahhh Ha Ha…
