The Duck Lady picked me up yesterday morning bright and early so we could have ourselves a proper adventure day.
Our first stop was to Johnny’s Seed Company to stock up on seed packets for her garden {I had already bought almost all of mine} and to have a look around.
The only thing was… They no longer have their seeds out on display so instead we sat down at a table in the reception area and looked through their catalog and made a list of all the seeds we needed before handing our lists over the counter to someone.
I spent about $20, and The Duck Lady coughed up about $250. 😉
After we were done at Johnny’s we headed north to Maine Grains for some specialty flours.
It was the first time either of us had been there and we didn’t take a tour of the facility, we did sit down for a bite to eat in their little restaurant, Miller’s Table.
We both ordered sandwiches and got a salad to share.
The Duck Lady got an Italian.
And I had a roasted beet and goat cheese sandwich. Both of the sandwiches were good.
They also had wood fired pizzas available {maybe next time}.
Attached to the restaurant was a little gift shop filled with treasures, kitchen gadgets, cookbooks and small bags of grains.
I ended up going home with a bag of spelt flour, rye flour and a few cookies for the trip home.
One of the things I’m hoping to do this winter is to try a bunch of new bread recipes. I was hoping I’d be able to do it in my new AGA oven… but hey, why waste a perfectly good winter sulking about that. Right? I might as well get on with it and just use the old oven.
As we were heading out of town we passed by a bakery and decided we couldn’t’ pass it up so we circled back and made our way into The Bankery in downtown Skowhegan for a look around.
The Duck Lady decided on a carrot cake cupcake and some stollen bread.
And I bought a fancy ice cream sandwich.
Which was fantastic!
Vanilla ice cream, apple pie and a graham cracker. Does it get any better than that?
It was a good day. With good food and good company. I’m so glad we took the time off from our normal busy routines to get in a little adventure before the craziness of the next two weeks hits.

Thanks for taking us along on the adventure – loved it. Can’t wait to see how you use the spelt. And that gourmet ice cream sandwich sounds incredible!

The floors in the shop! Is there anything more beautiful than a wide plank floor?
I’ve never thought about having beets and goat cheese on a sandwich, but now I’m intrigued. We have both in the fridge so I know what I’m having for lunch today!

Sounds like a perfect day! Please share what you do with your flours. I just tried a new banana bread recipe that was made with einkorn and spelt. It was very good. I’m trying to learn to bake with flours other than AP.

Doesn’t Duck Lady have an Aga? Maybe she will let you bake some bread in that oven in exchange for some of your home canned delicacies

Hi Mavis, sounds like a fun day. When my kids were very young I started baking bread. When the last one went into grade 1 I went back to my career in healthcare. Fast forward 24 yrs and I was able to retire. I went back to making bread not only because it is so good, so many grains to try. But honestly I just love to do it. Especially on a winter day with stew or a roast bubbling away, I love to stand in front of a window look at the snow and just knead away. Very zen, well for me anyway.
Bake on and have fun.
