Nantucket Whale Runner pattern by Doreen Frost and Mavis Butterfield
One of my goals this year was to keep track of all the rugs I hooked. I’m sure most of you will find my rug hooking posts totally boring, but I wanted to keep a visual record of all the rugs and pillows I made this year.
It’s super easy to keep a tally of the number of rugs I’ve hooked during a year, but by the end of the year for the most part, I have totally forgotten exactly what rugs I did hook.
This little journal entry is a way of helping me keep track of that.

June was sort of a crazy month for us as we were staying in the Airbnb and then another before finally moving into our new place. I think I actually surprised myself that I got anything hooked at all.
But I did! Here are all the rugs I hooked in June. I finished four pieces, 1 larger table runner and 3 whale pillows.

I can’t say that I will have the time to hook any pieces in July as there is so much unpacking, and garden planning and other new home related things to do. Plus I have a trip to plan for and visitors that are already planning on coming marked on the calendar.
But we’ll see. You never know.

The thing I love most about rug hooking is that you can pick it up and put it down anytime you need to. So I think my plan for July is to put a couple of rugs on my frames {a small holiday piece and a larger rug I’ve been wanting to hook for 2 years now} on my frames and we’ll see what happens.
Hobbies. Everyone needs a hobby. 😉

Beautiful rugs! I love blue! Not boring at all – love seeing what you are making! The second one is my favorite, and the colors feel very calming.

I love seeing what you create! When did you begin to use frames for your work? I thought you preferred just holding it in your lap? What brand of frames are you using? Sorry for all of the questions, but I find rug hooking fascinating and hope to learn the hobby.
Mavis Butterfield says
I started using the frames and hoops about 2 years ago. Before that {nearly 25 years!} I preferred just holding it the rug in my lap as I hooked. I shoud do a post on all the hoops/frames I have.

I was just going to ask the same question. I really want to learn and was just going to order a beginner whale pattern and hook. What other supplies do I need to start? thanks in advance.
Mavis Butterfield says
Most beginning hookers use a simple embroidery or quilting hoop to start with. You can pick one up at any fabric or craft store for a few dollars. I use a 2” handmade hoop made by Etsy seller Barnett’s Hoops. It’s a wonderful hoop and worth every penny in my book. http://www.etsy.com/listing/109455095

Please do! I’m in need of a new hobby! All of mine have become boring to me. I’m curious, when you sell the dyed fabric for your rugs, are they already cut into strips or is that a job that I would do? I hope that’s not a dumb question! I’d love to see tools that you would recommend for a rookie and any beginner books to get me started! Thank you!

I love your work! Please do make that post on frames and hoops. I have a Barnett’s hoop, and I love it, too. I know a lot of people like frames, but I love the portability of a hoop.

I love your rug hooking posts!

Yes, do a post on your rug hooking tools, etc. As a fellow “stripper and hooker” I love to see them in your posts. Do you use a fabric stripper? Or some other method. Would love to know about that too, especially since you put kits together.

Seeing your finished items is never boring. It is inspiring!

Def not boring Mavis, I enjoy seeing everything you’ve created!
I wish I had your energy now, but I did at your age.

LOVELOVELOVE that whale pillow! Hey, just wondering, did you ever sell the T. rex drift wood?
