Back in early December when the HH decided he wanted {an excuse to buy himself} a fancy espresso machine, {something I had zero interest in because I don’t drink coffee} he suggested we buy our own gifts for Christmas.
Which was sort of funny because we aren’t really big on gift giving {to each other}. Mostly because we’ve been married forever and if there was something one of us truly wanted… we’d just buy it for ourselves {after debating about it forever of course}.
Yada yada yada … He bought the espresso machine… and I decided what I really wanted {besides a new Sue Tirrell mug {{which I got}} was a solo trip to a place I have wanted to go to for about 3 years now.
And when I told him about it, he basically thought I was crazy.
So I played around with the idea in my head for about a week before finally telling him, “I’m done thinking about it. I’ve made up my mind. I’m doing it.”
And that was that. A few emails, tickets and reservations later… The deal was done.
And he was in shock. To put it mildly. 🙂 🙂 🙂
And then it {the comments} started…
HH: What am I going to do for 3 weeks while you’re away?
Mavis: Seriously!? Who wouldn’t want a few weeks to themselves?
But still sitting there with a bewildered look on his face…
Mavis: You’ll have Lucy to take care of, and packages to mail everyday and you’ll have to check in with the library ladies. Oh, and I can make sure you have a house project or two to work on {I said the house project bit with a smile on my face.}
And there will probably be a snow storm… so you’ll be busy with the snow blower. Trust me. You’ll love it.
Then an hour later… as if this would bring me to my senses…
HH: What about your tea and hot cocoa schedule? It will be all messed up!
Mavis: Umm do you really think they don’t have tea and hot cocoa there? I’m pretty sure there’s a shop. {Granted I have no idea what it’s stocked with or how often it’s open but here’s a thought… I could always pack some tea and cocoa in my luggage.}
Then later in the day…
HH: Do you know what the weather is going to be like there? It’s going to be cold and snowy and probably really windy there too.
Mavis: You mean, just like here in Maine?
The HH’s quips from Day 2
HH: Are you really going?
Mavis: Yep.
A half an hour later…
HH: You know this whole trip is pretty ridiculous.
Mavis: Haven’t you figured out by now that ridiculous is my middle name?
Another hour goes by…
HH: Lucy is really going to miss you.
Mavis: Geez, way to pour it on.
Then another hour later…
HH: I was checking out the sunrise/sunset times of when you’ll be there and it’s something like the sun rises at 9:30 in the morning and the sun sets around 3:30 pm.
Mavis: Really? Debbie Downer, is that all you’ve got?
The whole thing was pretty comical.
And then… as I was pulling the sheets off the bed to toss them in the wash later that day…
HH: You know when you’re gone Lucy and I are not going to wash the sheets.
Mavis: Yep. I’m sure you’ll live like pigs and clean up and wash the sheets the morning you pick me up from the airport.
And ON and ON it went. For 3 days. THREE DAYS. I think he was still in disbelief .
HH: Have you seen the accommodations there? {I hadn’t shown him yet.}
HH: You’ll probably get scurvy. {What!?}
*****
I just rolled my eyes and went on with what I was doing… Until finally, he stopped.
Husbands. They sure have a funny way of telling you they’re going to miss you.
I leave tonight.
Wish me luck. Although I think it’s my husband that’s going to need it more than me. 😉

BON VOYAGE!!!

Have a great trip! My partner had some similar responses when I went on my first solo work trip in 2018 to Sweden for two weeks. It took about a week after I left for him to realize how much fun he could have while I was gone. Now he has a group of friends he calls up whenever I go on travel (about 2x a year) and a special routine that involves eating all the foods he likes and I don’t and taking a break from house chores for as long as he likes.
Tracy says
I can’t wait to hear about your adventure!
Jeanine says
Well…there goes your food budget. Have a great trip and keep us in the loop when you can.

Have a wonderful time! I’m happy you’re going after your dreams!
Last year I finally took a trip to Iceland with a good friend after begging my husband to go with me for years. I wanted to see the Northern Lights & see they we did! We saw them on the plane ride over & the night before we left we saw a 3 hour spectacular display like the National Geographic photos.
Maria says
I’m guessing that’s where Mavis is heading – Iceland! It’s on my travel list also.

LOVE it! Can’t wait to see where you ended up going. Someplace very North, lol. One of my bucket list places is Alaska to see the northern lights and the icebergs. I actually have a girlfriend who lives there.
Hmmmm… and WHY haven’t I gone yet? Hmmm…
Teri says
Have a fantastic trip. Stay warm.

Have a great trip. I love solo travel from time to time. Question for you. You have taken trips with friends and your daughter. Does your husband not enjoy long distance travel ie taking a plane somewhere?
debbie in alaska says
My guesses (I don’t think you’ve stated where you are going yet or if you did I missed it)
Iceland
Norway
Sweden
Alaska (less likely as you probably wouldn’t need 3 weeks and HH wouldn’t be making all the “scurvy and so far away comments)
Kimberly Vassar says
Have a blast!
Arbie Goodfellow says
My guess is the Shetland Islands!
I want to go in the next couple of years.
If my guess is right have you watched Shetland the series…SUPER good!
Sharon says
That series is why I want to go to Shetland!

Oh, my word…I never would have thought we have much in common, but that’s just about word-for-word how that conversation would have gone down in our home! I hope you have a safe and fantastic trip!

Hope you have a great time! Can’t wait to hear all about it. My sister-in-law just got back from a trip to India for 12 weeks and my brother barely got the stuff done that he was planning to do while she was gone. LOL I am sure your HH will be able to keep busy, too!
Kippy says
Wherever you go you will have fun. My guess is the Hebrides
sandyf says
Faroe Islands?
Kathy says
Sounds exactly l like the trip I’d love – to stay at the Fair Isle studio for 3 weeks. Of course I’d have to pop on over to Shetland – Lerwick, Bressay, etc for a visit too. The sun rises about 9:30 there these days snd sets around 3. If that’s where you’re going, you are very fortunate indeed!
Brianna says
Your conversation is too funny! My hubby would be the opposite, he would probably repack my bags for me, make sure every detail was planned and I did not miss a thing, provide me with a detailed mission plan and itinerary, provide alternate routes and alternate itineraries for days based on my mood, a list of food places for my preferences, a tracker, and several backup devices to communicate in case of a device failure, and finally a kick out the door. I have done a few solo trips without him and I find it empowering and uplifting and it makes us closer when we see one another again. He has done many without me and it is nice to have him gone, but nice to have him home. Distance makes the heart grow fonder.
Sounds like you are heading somewhere in the northern Hemisphere with short days, long nights, and cool weather. Have fun!
charwelsh says
My guesses are the Aland or Faroe Islands!
Rhonda R Relyea says

My husband always says his 2 favourite words are ‘home alone’!
I had a ‘please myself’ 3 week trip to the UK (from Australia) in 2019. It was absolutely brilliant. Have a wonderful time.
Carolin says
Have a great and safe trip, Mavis, and best of luck for the two of you 😉
Alison says
Oh!!!! You’ll LOVE it!!! Ihope it’s Iceland!!!
I did the same (solo hiking trip) in Iceland in June (to Hornstrandir). Something magical about stepping into one of the most isolated place on earth.
Savour every second Mavis – even the hiccups 🙂

Have fun! Keep us updated!

His worry and concern are very sweet of him. He is such a loving husband. You will be greatly missed. May he find time to relax and fins a few local adventures as well. Maybe the girl will come for a solo visit with dad? Have fun!
