This morning I wanted to share with you some photos One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Melissa sent in last night.
Here’s what she had to say…
So far we have done very well with our reclaimed food and hopefully it continues. Thank you so much for writing your blog and I am so glad that I found it! I don’t think we have bought any vegetable produce, other than onions and sweet potatoes, in 2 weeks. We eat a very produce centered diet and I am excited to see the difference in our grocery budget!”
Holy canolies Melissa, I think you hit the jackpot! Keep up the good work!

I think I need to start shopping at a different grocery store. I asked our grocer and he said, “No.” He then proceeded to tell me that he goes through three times a day to get rid of bad food, etc.

I just can’t believe these stores throw all this produce away! I’m sure there are plenty of organizations/people that could benefit from it.

That’s a lot of good produce! Good for you and your family. I think by getting this reclaimed food we are all eating more veggies…I know I am!

Thank you for posting my pics! I actually lucked out and got a “yes” from the first grocery store I asked, but I asked the smallest grocery in town figuring they’d be the least likely to have a policy against it. I just wish I’d asked sooner!
Good luck to all of the reclaimers out there! 🙂

This is fabulous, I live in Ontario Canada and our local grocery store actually sells the “throw away” produce each week, the package it up and usually sell each styrofoam tray full of veggies or fruit for about 70 cents. I once scored enough cherries for a pie for 70 cents. it was awesome!

I finally worked up the courage to ask at a store yesterday and I received an answer of ‘no’. The ‘produce man’ said it had been 10 years since the store has been allowed to give away the food. I didn’t take the ‘no’ answer personally (which is my first reaction and the reason I was nervous about asking.) I drove down the street and asked at another store. The ‘produce man’ there said he already had people picking up, so I asked if he would call me if there was a no-show or someone decided not to pick up anymore. HE TOOK MY NUMBER. Yes! Maybe I’ll get a call, maybe not, but at least I asked.

Good for you Sheila!
