While The Girl was here over the weekend, we decided to clean up the beach {or rocky shore rather, I think there probably needs to be sand to call it a beach} and holy canolies we were surprised at all the things we found on just our little strip of shorefront.
A baby buoy and what I thought was a hockey puck {not a hockey puck according to my husband, but one of those chewing tobacco canister things}.
Tons of rope! With all the lobster boats nearby, maybe I should start a rope collection. I bet by the end of summer I’d have enough to make one of those lobster rope doormats.
Either a seriously old bottle of Mountain Dew or…..
Giant chunks of Styrofoam, rope, plastic bags, plastic bottles, candy bar wrappers, strappy things, parts from a trap, aluminum cans, Styrofoam cups, a buoy and a rat trap. {Who is catching rats at sea? }
And then because we were surprised at how much trash we found on the shore, and the tide was out…. The Girl and I decided to walk over to the island and see if there was any trash over there. Thank goodness the eye in the sky kept was there to keep an eye on us in case we got stuck {enter eye roll here}.
Note: When you husband owns a drone, a metal detector, a hand held radio and carries reading glasses in his front pocket, he is officially an old man.
We were laughing hysterically the whole way there.
Luckily we didn’t get stuck {or fall down}.
We searched the entire island and only found 3 pieces of trash.
Maybe next time we’ll pack a picnic lunch and stay a bit longer.
Have I told you how much I love it hear yet? 🙂
Have an awesome day, SUNSHINE is in the forecast for today. Wahooooo!

Wow…your tide certainly have a big ebb and flow. And that sure is a lot of rope!

Rats can be a big problem on the fishing wharves, because there are plenty of places to hide and breed, and there’s plenty to eat. When I was a kid we were going out fishing, and my dad tied our boat up to a dock in Portland and went to buy some pogies for bait, leaving me on the boat, and I saw a rat the size of a cat crawling along under the wharf, about 20-30 feet ahead of the boat. (Shudder.) I’m not surprised a trap would end up in the water, nor am I surprised that it may not have been effective.
Also, some people just throw stuff in the water, rather than into a proper receptacle (as you’ve seen). It could have had a rat in it and someone just chucked it overboard. Something ate the rat, and you get the trash. (Littering should have much higher fines, IMHO.)

I hate litter! Always taught my kids never to litter. It’s worse now because of all the plastic. Remember the commercial of the Indian standing by the road crying when someone litters?

I do remember it! It was powerful! They should resurrect it! With all the disposable gloves and masks, creating a lot of recent trash. I’m shocked at how many I see in parking lots! Shameful!

It’s the “or…” that’s the scary part!

Tide flats can be deadly up here in Alaska. There have been people who get stuck and literally cannot get their legs free and then these 20 food tide differentials occur and they drown. GLAD that’s not an issue in Maine!!! For those that are curious: https://www.adn.com/alaska-life/2020/07/13/the-true-history-of-cook-inlets-deadly-mudflats/

Very interesting! Thank you for including it. I’ve been clamming in the mud flats in Maine and that mud is VERY sticky, but not a killer, as far as I know.

“Your” Island needs a Camp Butterfield flag…

You two look like you could be sisters! Life in Maine suits you Ms Mavis! So happy for you.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
That is NOT Mt Dew! Beaches do not have to have sand.

Mavis,
The drone photos capture wonderful pictures of you and your daughter.
I got a kick out of the Note – My husband has a drone and carries reading glasses in his front pocket; I think you’re right.

I’m betting on the “or”, lol. You and The Girl need to get some hip waders to go out there and not get mud and water down your boots. I vote for a flag and a picnic table out on the island…
