Last night as I was going to bed, I checked the weather forecast for Gig Harbor, Washington {where we used to live} and it was a whopping 106 degrees! HOLY CANOLIES.
Mrs. HB had sent me a video earlier in the day to show me how she was keeping her chickens cool with a fan and watermelon halves scattered about the chicken yard. 106 degrees. That’s pretty hot if you ask me. Here in Coastal Maine, luckily, it was only about 76.
So last night before I drifted off to sleep, I checked the weather report for Tuesday at our place and the forecast said MID 80’s!! Well after seeing that I jumped out of bed and shoved the ice cream bowl into the freezer and hopped back into bed because all the usual ice cream stands that I like to hit up are all closed on Tuesdays. 🙁
And so naturally, when I woke up this morning, and all I could think about was ice cream. And which flavor I was going to make.
I still haven’t decided yet if I’ll make chocolate or strawberry ice cream yet, but I do know homemade ice cream will be on the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner at our place today.
I mean after all, ice cream has milk, eggs and possibly fruit. Seriously, what more do you need than that? 🙂
Here’s a roundup of all of my favorite Homemade Ice Cream Recipes. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.
- Chocolate Ice Cream
- Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
- Old Fashioned Strawberry Ice Cream
- Blueberry Ice Cream
- Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
- Pumpkin Gingersnap Ice Cream
- Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream
- Cherry Vanilla Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
- Lemon Ice Cream
- Raspberry Sorbet
And let’s not forget the freezer pops:
Since we are kind of ice cream freaks around here and actually own all 3 of these ice cream makers. The Cuisinart one is great for sorbet and the KitchenAid is great for year round use. My favorite one however is the White Mountain Wooden Bucket Ice Cream Maker. It’s great for parties and backyard events with lots of people! So if you are in the market for an ice cream maker, I can recommend all three! 🙂
- Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker
- KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment
- White Mountain Appalachian Series Wooden Bucket 6-Quart Hand Cranked Ice Cream Maker

112° here in Maple Valley. Even you Mavis, would have given in to the AC.
On the good side, I have never had a better batch of dried basil. I put it between two screen drying racks and set it in the sun. Beautiful and crispy. No black areas, it’s all even colored dark green. He heat was ALMOST worth it

I did the same thing with bay leaves. It was 115 with really low humidity. Worked like a charm.

Glad you got some good dried basil out of the heat. 🙂

89 here in northern NY and feels like 92 with 48% humidity. The humidity has been in the mid 50s for the past few days… ugh!
Dee says
79 but with more than 60% humidity. No AC available

We topped out at 116 in the Willamette Valley yesterday. 84 feels like a cool breeze today. We spent the morning trying to save what’s left of the garden. Probably half our crops withered and died. I’ve lived here 65 years and cannot stress how disturbing 116 degrees feels in once-upon-a-time green Eden.

104 in our area of Seattle yesterday. A/c in only room so that is where we all stayed, Store bought ice cream in freezer. Cooler today-yeah!

It was 107 in Mill Creek. I have been watering twice a day and partially shaded my peas. The spinach bolted and there is a withered stem here and there, but happy my garden survived. Everyone is so excited the heat wave ismgone, but it’s still supposed to be 90 degrees…

92 in SW Ohio and the humidity is high. We got a 15 minute shower yesterday and afterward the humidity got worse.

When I was a little 70’s girl, at a lot of Grandma’s get togethers we would take turns cranking the ice cream maker which usually had orange sherbet that tasted like orange creamsicle. It was made out of orange nehi. It was the bomb diggity boom! I want to find that recipe and make it!!!
Vicki Spurling says
Bonnie, I have two recipes. I’ve tried this one. Add 3 cans of orange soda and a 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk to a large coffee can. Place lid on tightly. Place inside a large bucket with a lid. Make sure lid is secure!!! Add ice and rock salt around the outside of the smaller coffee can. Place lid on large bucket. Gently turn on it’s side and have children roll it back and forth to each other. It makes ice cream pretty fast. Just be careful not to get any saltwater inside the coffee can!
2nd recipe – mix together a 2 liter bottle of soda to 2 14oz cans of sweetened condensed milk. Pour into ice cream marker. Ta Da!

Eastern Oregon 109F today and 111F tomorrow. Crazy hot and I lost half my garden. We have a dry hot wind making everything crispy, that won’t quit blowing.

It was terrifyingly hot here in Salem, Oregon. 117 degrees. My air conditioning failed and thankfully a kind A/C gentlemen was able to fix it but the house got pretty hot while waiting (87 degrees downstairs, hotter upstairs). I tipped him big and offered everything from iced drinks to fixing him lunch! (It took over 24 hours to get the house to 80 degrees.) I think I managed to save my garden (time will tell). Today it is 64 degrees and cloudy, thank goodness. I never want to live through that again, but I fear it is our future.
