I don’t know why but it seems like the handful of times the HH and I have eaten out this year it’s been at breakfast places.
Well a BIG thanks to Dawn for suggesting Becky’s Diner in Portland, the place was AWESOME.
I don’t know about you, but I love a good, clean, no frills diner with simple food and a friendly staff.
Becky’s Diner in Portland, Maine was just that. We went with friends and had a great time and we’re already looking forward to going back.
Everytime we go out for breakfast I always look to see if they offer eggs Benedict. Becky’s did and so of course I had to order it.
I don’t know why I do this {maybe it’s my favorite breakfast meal that seems like too much work to make at home?} but I’ve been doing it for so many years now and I think it sort of makes the HH a little crazy. 😉
Fact: You cannot get the fruit bowl after 2pm. I don’t know why, but I thought this was funny. I was going to ask why they don’t serve fruit after 2 pm but I totally forgot.
And when was the last time you saw “banana” in a fruit bowl in a restaurant? More places should do that!
The eggs Benedict? Lovely. I’d get it again.
The HH almost always gets an omelet. {Another thing we typically don’t make at home}. He said it was outstanding!
The French toast got rave reviews too.
As did the blueberry pancakes {I was offered a bite and I will say, they were the BEST blueberry pancakes I’ve ever had}.
Not only did they use tiny Maine blueberries, but I’m pretty sure there’s a secret ingredient in the batter because they were SO GOOD.
So if you ever find yourself in Portland, Maine and are looking for a great place to stop and have a bite, put Becky’s Diner on your list.
We all loved the place!!

I always get Eggs Benedict if I go out for breakfast but I prefer Irish Eggs Benedict with corned beef hash.
Sue says
Totes agree, Dawn! The only way I’ll get eggs benedict is if it’s the Irish version.

You gotta come to Magpie next.

I’ve been thinking about it! I would happily wash dishes for a shift in exchange for a box of pastries. I might need some help with a project I am working on and it would be a good excuse to come. And I could go to Monticello and Michie Tavern too. 🙂

A few peculiar things…..fruit not served after 2:00PM and canned hash vs. homemade hash and real maple syrup vs. sugar processed junk? Who goes to a diner to have canned hash? Isn’t real maple syrup a staple of Maine, why offer the other stuff?
Mavis Butterfield says
I don’t get the hash thing either, but it’s very common up here {I have no idea why!!}. Real maple syrup usually costs a little extra so that’s why you always see it offered. I think I’ve only been 1 place where it was offered without an extra charge.

Wow! Crazy prices! I just don’t eat breakfast out when I can make it all at home for $2 or less! I’d rather save the $$ to travel!
The places in Maine all seem really expensive!
