When our AGA was delivered back in February it came with Mary Berry’s The Complete AGA Cookbook. As I was flipping through the pages, I noticed a recipe for beef in horseradish cream that looked pretty darn tasty. And this past weekend, I made it.
Well holy cow man, the dish was so spot on and satisfying in every way, I told the HH that the next time we have someone over for dinner, this beef in horseradish cream dish is what I’ll be making.
In fact it was so good, I’m already planning on making it again next week! And the best part about this recipe? It can be made ahead of time and warmed in the oven just before serving.
Apparently it’s one of Mary Berry’s go to buffet dishes as well.
Make this! You’ll be so glad you did.

PrintBeef In Horseradish Cream
Ingredients
2 pounds steak tips, cut into 1” pieces
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
2 teaspoons sugar
40 grams flour {1 ½ oz}
2 1/4 cups beef stock
1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons horseradish sauce
1 tablespoon fresh parsley or chives
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees.
Heat the oil over medium heat and brown the beef on all sides. {About 3-4 minutes.}
Add onions, curry, ginger sugar and flour to the beef and cook for another minute. Stir in the beef stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to a boil, stirring until the sauce has thickened a bit.
Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for an additional five minutes.
Cover the dish and transfer to the oven and cook for 3-4 hours until the meat is tender.
When ready to serve, place mixture into a serving dish and gently stir in the horseradish cream.
Garnish with parsley or chives and serve.

I love horseradish! I remember my dad harvesting it, peeling it, and shredding it in the yard and all the jars filled in the freezer. Just plain horseradish, not the creamy stuff. I am the only one in my house who eats it, but I find the store purchased stuff to be mild. I eat mounds of it on beef or bison roasts and steaks. I love it on a shaved prime rib sandwich too with a little arugula. I have no idea why my hubby and kids hate horseradish but my parents both love it.

I wish I had discovered how great it is earlier. Love it! 🙂

It’s easy to grow.

Would you serve anything with it if you made it for company? Wondering what else would be good with it.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. I served it with roasted potatoes and peas.
Teri says
Looks tasty. Did you order that horseradish cream?
Mavis Butterfield says
I picked it up in Scotland. 🙂 It’s crazy strong but soooo good! I’m sure you can find it online.

Hi Mavis,
Looks delicious! Would the dish be covered in the oven? Do you think it would be as tasty if it was finished in a crockpot instead of an oven (in the summer)? You can make horseradish cream yourself with horseradish and heavy or sour cream if the readymade jar isn’t available.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, I covered the dish in the oven. I think this recipe would do well in the crockpot. 🙂

A city near St. Louis — Collinsville, Ill. — has a horseradish festival every year. Collinsville calls itself the Horseradish Capital of the World. Sadly, I have yet to go but need to make it a priority.

Do you normally put your food in nice serving dishes, just for the two of you, like in your pic? Makes me feel like a slacker.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes.

Yummm! I’ve gotten that same horseradish on Amazon !!! Clears our your sinuses!!
Linda Practical Parsimony says
My history with horseradish. When we lived in Owensboro, Ky, there was a fast food joint called Sir Beef. I taught my 3-and 5-year-old to eat horseradish. They loved it. So, we would get in the car with my husband and he was overcome with the smell or horseradish. I would make him take a tiny bite of horseradish in order not to have him complain of my breath in bed. Children were mystified as to why he did not love it as they did.
Arby’s has same horseradish sauce that I eat to clear my sinuses, better than any prescription.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
I meant to say, I need to make this.
Susan says
Do you think this recipe could be made with lamb instead of beef? I don’t eat beef.
JOAN RICHARD says
That looks yummy. I can’t wait to try it. Any excuse to eat horseradish and I am in! I eat it with chicken too. Not sure why I just love the stuff. Thanks for the recipe.
Diane says
Mavis, have you ever had Arby’s horsey sauce on their sandwiches? Do you think the horseradish cream would compare to that? I have some extra packets and wonder if that would make a good substitute.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ve never eaten at Arby’s before so I wouldn’t know. Hopefully someone else will.
Mavis Butterfield says
HH has and he said the horseradish cream is considerably stronger.
