Last year as we drove along on our 3,000 mile trip from the West to the East coast, one of the stops along our route was Bernice’s Bakery in Missoula, Montana. Several people had suggested the scratch bakery as the perfect spot to stop and have lunch, and after reading the reviews online, The Girl and I made sure to include Bernice’s on our list of many pit stops along the 3,000 mile route.
The atmosphere was welcoming, and the bakeshop truly had something for everyone.
We found pies on the counter, baked goods in one case, salads and ready made sandwiches in another and an entire refrigerated case of homemade frosted cakes ready to be decorated. Bernice’s had EVERYTHING a good old fashioned bake shop should have on hand at any given moment.
The generous seating area was a plus!
Beautiful, ready make cakes …. just begging to be bought and have Happy Birthday scrolled across the top with matching frosting…. I don’t know why, but seeing those lovely cakes in the case made me smile. Like there’s still hope…. that people are still willing to go out of their way to buy a cake from a real hometown scratch bakery instead of just tossing an overly processed one in their cart while picking up tomatoes at the grocery store because it’s more convenient.
The daisy cake was my favorite. And the perfect cake if your only decoration on top was a set of those chubby numeral candles, or maybe a set of those tall and skinny ones.
Hometown bakeries… They’re the best! 😉
So if you ever find yourself in Missoula, Montana… be sure and stop by Bernice’s Bakery. The Girl and I give it 2 thumbs up.

Yay for Bernice’s! I am a reader of your blog living in Missoula, Montana and Bernice’s is definitely a local favorite. My daughters always request a Bernice’s cake for their birthdays. They are divinely delicious.

After 20+ years on the east coast, I moved home to Montana this past summer. We have more terrific bakeries in Missoula than we did in DC. My kids are thrilled that we live within walking distance of Bernice’s!

I wish we had known about Bernice’s when we passed through Missoula! We did go to one of your recommended places last weekend….Hussy’s General Store. What a great place! Thanks for the recommendation!
