Is it just me, or does it seem like the birds only get the flu around the major baking seasons? Christmas… Easter, you know what I mean. Because seriously, $4.69 for a dozen store bought eggs because of “bird flu” is a little nuts to me.
I would happily pay $5 a dozen from the egg stand down the street… But $4.69 at the grocery store? It annoys me. Big time.
Scrambled eggs and ham on homemade bread though, that’s another story.
Our meals this past week were pretty simple. Nothing too fancy and several came from the freezer section {thank you Trader Joe’s ready made meals!}.
With only about 60 more patterns to draw out, I should be done by next weekend and back to my regular schedule of experimenting in the kitchen and baking homemade treats.
Old standbys like tuna and crackers have been an easy go to option this winter, but I’m ready to move on to something a little more exciting. 😉
Pickety bits.
Trader Joe’s Kung Pao chicken.
And there were also cheesy tots with bacon bits and FRESH chives from the front garden. No salads this week. 🙁 I miss avocados. Maybe we’ll be in the area next week and we’ll be able to stock up on fresh produce again.
Oh. And there was a lot of cracked corn too. For the wild turkeys that is.
This time of year {mating season} the turkeys are up bright and early at the back window waiting for their breakfast of cracked corn {and occasionally, sunflower seeds}.
Usually it’s just the same two turkeys coming for a morning visit.
But word must have gotten out and now it’s like that scene from Harry Potter with the owl’s on Privit Drive and well… It’s like we are smack dab in the middle of a nature show.
Life. It’s never dull around here at Camp Butterfield, that’s for sure.
What’s new at your place? And how are the egg prices in your neck of the woods? Curious minds want to know.
Peace Out.

Aldi 1 dozen eggs 2.05
Publix 1 dozen eggs about 3 dollars

Bird Flu has been on the news several times last week so I’m sure that’s enough to make the prices go up! Now they’re finding cows with bird flu and a dairy worker even caught it from a cow. The worker was hospitalized but is recovering, thank goodness!

Market Basket and Aldi are right around $2/dozen. MB is $2.69 for 18. I miss the days when eggs were cheap.
Jamie says
Our small grocery stores egg prices are really high but Costco still had 5 dozen for 9.99
Karen says
In very southern New Jersey….jumbo are 2.99 a dozen

I am so thankful for our chickens – they give us anywhere from 5-10 eggs a day right now. We are able to bless friends with the extra eggs. We spend about 32.00 every 6 weeks to feed our chickens – we have 17 (10 are laying eggs and 7 will start laying around the end of May) – which is roughly 5.50 a week for eggs. But that does include feeding the younger chickens that aren’t laying yet. From April 1st – 7th, we got 52 eggs which equals 4 1/3 dozen – so we are paying about 1.30 per dozen. Having chickens doesn’t mean “free” eggs but at least we don’t have to worry about where they came from. As a side note, egg production goes way down in the winter (we only get about 20 eggs a week from the 10 chickens).

Dh has been on an egg only meal plan (by choice) since he got out of the hospital back in February. Eggs at Wal-Mart are $2.04 a dozen and $9.88 for the 60 ct. I just read about the bird flu and like you, I’m watching for the price change.

In Washington, stores are only permitted to sell cage free eggs which are running around $7.00 a dozen. I am so grateful for our hens who are laying around dozen a day!!
CynScotland says
Washington DC? I live in Washington state and all the stores sell a variety of eggs.

I’m in WA too. While there are plenty of eggs at the price point you mentioned, you can still find less expensive ones. Costco has a carton of two dozen for under $7. At grocery stores, I have seen them for about 4.50 a dozen.
Veronica says
I’m in WA state too and egg prices have been up since January when the cage-free law went into effect.
Regular large eggs are $4/doz at Safeway at regular price, but they were on sale at $2/doz before Easter. CostCo’s regular price of the 5 dozen carton is $2.40/doz.
I never thought I’d say that buying CostCo’s eggs were cheaper than getting them from a grocery store. We only bought them when they were on sale for $1/doz, so having them double and double-and-a-half has put quite a damper on our food budget.
Sarah says
While that law is true, it really hasn’t affected egg prices that much. I just bought eggs for $2.58 a dozen… sounds like perhaps your grocery store is taking advantage of the law to pass the dollar onto the consumer.
Bec in the PNW says
I buy the nicer eggs when they have them at Costco and it tends to run about $9-ish for two dozen. The yolks are beautifully orange and taste so much better than the cheaper eggs to me. During the summer, I try to buy local eggs at the farmers market.
Nothing too exciting food-wise over here. My husband told me that he’d build me garden beds instead of buying the ones I’d been eying. And he’s going to build two! So now I have another 4×8 bed to figure out what to grow in. An exciting, but kind of overwhelming, possibility for this not super experienced gardener!

Giant Food (VA/DC/MD) is $3.79/12 and $5.79/18
Food Lion 2.09/12, 2.99/18
Walmart 1.67/12, 2.47/18
It’ll be interesting to see how much the prices go up.

If you are upset, imagine how the poor poultry farmers feel, who are having to destroy their whole flocks. I really feel for them, what a hit. And since a lot is spread by wild birds, pastured birds are especially vulnerable.
Side note: my daughter who is currently working on her PhD in animal science says if you are concerned with animal welfare, eggs that say “cage free” without stipulating “pasture raised” are typically raised uncaged in giant barns, which is a great degree more stressful than battery cages. Food labeling is so misleading somtimes…

Yes! Thanks for sharing all of that!
Sadly my loved hens were killed by a weasel and I have yet to line the coop with 1/4” wire so I can get more.. it’s very discouraging as I raised them from chicks…

Eggs here in Georgia aren’t bad right now. Kroger has them for $1.99 a dozen…..BTW did it get real dark where you are today? I heard Maine had totality in some places with the eclipse?
Mavis Butterfield says
Not as dark as I thought it would get… It was pretty chilly too.

Word is definitely out about the cracked corn!!!! Just wait!!!! You may have even MORE visitors!!!!!! Will you have one for dinner now that it’s turkey season?
Heidi N. says
King Soopers (Kroger) $2.79/dozen large eggs
Walmart $2.58
Target $2.59
Here in Colorado we have a new law requiring all egg-laying hens to be “cage-free”.
Lana says
Aldi today was $1.92 a dozen but we bought organic free range for 4.19.

Turkey question here….. In the lsat picture two of the turkeys on the road have their tail feathers in full flair. None of the others do. Is that a male/female thing? Or do all the other turkeys just have their tail feathers folded down? true question from a city girl!
Mavis Butterfield says
The toms are out in full force these days and it’s quite the show. There’s about 1 to every 5 females and the competition is pretty fierce.

Great post! I’m not sure why, but I enjoy reading about your past week’s menu. Loved the bit about the turkeys! While we still have wild turkeys in our area, I’m in the middle of town and about all I get in my back yard are rabbits, squirrels and birds, and they’re all after my vegetable garden!
Donna says
**I meant to say I really, really enjoy reading about your past week’s menu….

Eggs are about $2.69 dozen at Albertson’s in the PNW. We’ve been to sick the last couple of weeks to share ours from the hens so we have about seven dozen stacking up in the refrigerator.
