bits and bobs: A random assortment of things;
Remember when bathroom vanities were made with real wood and not molded pressed wood with a plastic coating that’s supposed to mimic paint? A popular big box home improvement store was selling this vanity for $399!!! I couldn’t believe it. Talk about CRAZY!!!
Need a new bucket? This one will set you back $39.99. And if you want the lid? That will cost you another $29.99. SOMEONE is off their rocker if they paying $70 for a bucket with a lid. And that’s all I have to say about that.
This place has wallpaper and color and all sorts of stuff on the walls and I LOVE it!
When my hair turns grey, I hope it looks like this.
I found this on the inside of a book the HH borrowed from our library. HOW COOL IS THAT? Even cooler, is that our library doesn’t even issue library cards {or ask for your phone number}. They know you by name. It’s like living in Mayberry or something. It’s the wildest thing and I never want to move.
I have never seem so many empty bottles of Fireball on the ground since moving to Maine. People don’t toss dental picks on the ground like they do in Washington, nope, here in Maine it’s all Fireball.
If this doesn’t top the free screws… I don’t know what else would. Then again maybe this is what people do in the winter months here.
What is the mandatory period for hanging on to cords that you have no idea what they are used for? A month? A year? 5 years? Because we’ve moved 3 times now and my husband STILL doesn’t know what this cord is for yet insists that we hang on to it.
Call me crazy, but if we haven’t needed it yet, I don’t think we ever will.
But what do I know?
The weekend, it’s here! Have a good one. 🙂

I have a bathroom cupboard (and kitchen cupboards) that have that faux painted/plastic coating on them from 1998 and the coating is peeling off on some of them. I wondered if anyone knew how to fix them? Is it a spray coating you buy to reapply? Thanks for all the wonderful places you show us, cool local spots, and sharing your adventures with us on your blog! YOU ROCK! Take care! Have a great day!

Looks like a generic usb cord with wall adapter. You can use each piece separately too. Good to have around since many non-apple devices use those types of setups for charging.
Jen says
My Sony and my husband’s Samsung use that type of charger, too. It’s a USB C on the “oval” end. A lot of of newer phones and similar devices use it.
But as far as how long to keep it? We have two cord boxes that contain nearly every variety of cord going back to the late 80s. And every time I make progress getting rid of them, we wind up needing something old out of the box. So I let him keep them.
marie says
Gosh Mavis! It’s a cord! Can’t begin to think about throwing it out cause it does go to something!!!!
Heather says
I was going to say keep it since there will be a use for it. We are always pulling cords / power supplies out of our box.
Rosemary Calhoun says
We have a box of cords that we hang onto (that we are not using) . . . because I know that as soon as I throw one out, we will need it and it will be crazy expensive to replace. Mind you, we have not had to use anything in that box . . . in years . . .but there it is. 🙂

for the life of me I will never understand the cost of Yeti products, so $70. for a bucket and lid is shocking I am not surprised. Oh and as for the cord just pitch it when he isn’t around. We moved 7 months ago and we finally threw out many old cell phone cords that no longer had a cell phone to go through. gezzzzz

Maybe a camera charger?

Samsung camera charger.

Oh the cord dilemma! We were excited to use our griddle to make pancakes..we found the “cords” for who knows what but nope…no cord for the griddle…but just added some oil and made wonderful waffles which I really prefer.
Thank you for this blog.

I’m surprised you haven’t found any Allen’s coffee brandy bottles! Most popular alcoholic drink in Maine for 20+ years. We took a private charter on a sloop off of Bailey Island a few years ago and the captain fished a half full bottle of it out of Casco Bay on our tour. I bet some lobsterman was missing that. lolz

I went gray last spring and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s more silver than gray, which is What I wanted.
We have moved 12 times and have a special cord basket. I know that at last count, there were 28 cords in there and I’m pretty sure 25 could be thrown away.
Lana says
Keep the cord since it is a standard size for a number of devices. We throw out peanut and cashew containers and it kills me to do it but we cannot keep or use them all. That exact size container can be purchased at Walmart for almost $5 each. Anything with the Yeti name is a stupid price and we find that their insulated cups are not the best out there even though they cost an arm and a leg.
We have a vacation house in a small town that sounds a lot like yours. Half of the fun of going there is the small town where life is slow and friendly. At home we are one mile from a six lane interstate and we can hear it.

Don’t get me started on Yeti prices and other overpriced-because-they-can companies. 😉 Granted, I’m willing to pay a certain amount for durable, American-made products, but I’ve definitely got a price limit. I’m deaf and had to deal with a lot of misconceptions throughout my career (A deaf journalist?? How does that work??), and never made much money. We just bought a 62-qt Coleman wheeled five-day cooler for only $50. Got good buyer reviews and that’s good enough for me. 😉

After our last move I went through all the cords and spent a full day trying them out on various electronics and trying to figure out what went with what. When I found a match I labeled it. I tossed all the rest unidentifiable cords with no match. 3 years later and my hubby hasn’t looked for any cords (he still has no idea I tossed them all) and I haven’t needed any. All those mystery cords are gone. I started with a full size 24” square moving box. I also tossed all the mouse’s that collect.

The plastic containers are a common request on my town’s No Buy FB group page (Boston area) . We know that most plastic is not recycled, despite our best efforts, so a lot of us try to re-use and re-purpose plastic. My blue plastic Maxwell House coffee canisters are a very popular need in the No-Buy group to hold staples like flour, sugar, etc.
I am sure the “Yeti” name is the reason they can get those ridiculous prices for those buckets and lids.
My husband hates those crappy wood cabinets – calls the material “wasp spit”. You get what you pay for.
Jennifer says
I totally understand the free containers! We often have nice ones, especially with screwtop lids (looking at you, Vital Collagen!) but we honestly don’t have a use for them. We buy in such bulk that we use 5 gal. buckets for storage (and NOT Yeti ones, thank you ver much!!) I always feel bad recycling the containers, as I think for someone they could be quite useful, but we don’t have the free share thing around here. Maybe we should just move to Maine and start our own posting for free, goo containers!!

My Dave says it is a standard power converter with a cord that converts a standard USB to a USB-C. His goes to a remote hard drive.
When we moved here I did make him get rid of cords he could not prove went to anything, though.
Carla M Edwards says
I agree with Jennifer. Those clear plastic containers are great for specialty flours or sugars and lots of other food. Dave’s Killer Bread outlet shop actually sells them for a couple of dollars a piece. I decided to save the exact same containers from empty Costco Parmesan Cheese and nuts containers. For people starting out, they might use these containers as canisters.

In my neck of the woods in rural Northern California (please don’t call it Cali!) I see those discarded airliner size Fireball bottles everywhere. And yes, the plastic tooth flossers are still a problem but I think face masks have over taken them. Sheesh, people. So, here’s a question for everyone. Do you pick up washable masks and give them a good clean before wearing? Some of the prints are really cute!
Cheryl says
I hate to tell you but we found a cord that my husband had no idea what it belonged to till we threw it away and not 6 months later said husband I bet that cord belongs to that thing. Don’t remember what it was but we needed a new cord.
Bonnie says
The cord looks like the one for my Samsung Galaxy a10e phone. It’s a few years old, but it’s awesome!….I am with you, real wood furniture is the best. They sure don’t make furniture like they use to. ……….. I love reusing containers or anything as long as it’s not too many. We use to reuse old butter & cool whip bowls in fridge. They call it in Georgia “red-neck” tupperware. Lol.

The previous owners of our house used those peanut/cashew containers to store leftover paint. I have started doing the same…no more drying out because you didn’t hammer the paint can lid tight enough.
Mavis Butterfield says
That is a FANTASTIC idea!!
Linda T says
No one has said this yet, so here’s my take on the empty containers. Many crafters use them as bases for paper-mache because they are lightweight and the final piece will not take as long to dry.
I still save Cool Whip containers. They are just the right size to bring a meal to a friend or neighbor who is ill.
I live out where recycling doesn’t come with the trash service. Anything we can keep from going into the landfill because someone else can use it, is a great idea. Trash takes up a lot of room, it exudes methane gas, getting it to the collection spot takes gas and manpower, and it just isn’t pretty. Use what you can.

You could offer clean containers to a school or daycare. Art teachers &
kindergarten teachers would be happy to get those!

It is interesting that many people commented on the power chords and Yeti buckets—but fewer commented on the $399 fake wood cabinet. And NOBODY commented on the house in Great Britain with the fish wallpaper! I suspect that the real reason that you loved it was the magnificent view and the bedroom that looks almost exactly like your guest room.

I have a drawer FULL of these stupid cords that I have no idea what they go to. BUT, you never know when I’ll need one. Groan… I think this is my kick in the petukis to go and empty it. Thanks!
