bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
Would you feel guilty lighting this?
I’ve been going through old podcasts {and listening to them on my computer because I am not a fan of apps} and I love the How I Built This series. There is always something to be learned and I even have a few that I’ve listened to over and over again. Do you do this too? Listen to the same podcast repeatedly? It’s like re-reading a book, don’t you think?
I came across this article about where lost luggage ends up and it irritates me. Mostly because the thought of someone profiting off of other people’s lost stuff but also, that there is SO MUCH lost luggage that there is a store for it! Grrr.
Have you ever lost a piece of luggage and never got it back?
I am in love with these handmade paper “dolls” from Etsy seller benconservato. People are so creative!!
I want to live in Aunt Dora’s cottage. Seriously, isn’t it the coziest place ever? The coastal blues, the woodburner, it’s all so perfect. And it’s in Port Isaac of course. 😉
John Bray has the BEST listings in Cornwall. And I’m beginning to think he has a stylist come in to all his properties and do their magic to make them look as cute as possible. I wonder how many times he’s had someone come in and say… I want it all! The furniture, the bedding, the dishes in the cupboard.
And lastly, the new Baker Creek catalog came in the mail yesterday… And there are some beautiful looking vegetables in there! I think I’m going to have to try those purple galaxy tomatoes on the cover.
Have a great day everyone,
~Mavis

I also got really mad about that luggage story! It really made me feel like airlines aren’t trying hard enough to get bags back to people!
And Mavis, I think I’ve recommended this to you before but if you like podcasts, try 70 over 70. I was thinking about it yesterday because there’s a wonderful episode with Norman Lear, may he rest in peace.

Thank you for the podcast recommendation. I will add it to my list! 🙂

Oh my, Aunt Dora’s cottage looks absolutely delightful! I can just imagine sitting there with a cup of tea before walking down to the water.

Seriously! I want to live in Aunt Dora’s cottage too!!!!

About 25 years ago my son was flying to visit relatives by himself. He left a compact disc player behind on his seat. About three weeks later we received it in the mail. I guess they tracked down our information because of all the information they had for an unaccompanied minor flying. I didn’t even report it being lost.

I have never had my luggage lost indefinitely, but I have had my luggage go missing for a few days. I have also forgotten a PSP in a seat pocket and they never could find it. I suspect a dishonest employee took it or someone else getting off noticed it and grabbed it as I reported it promptly.
My hubby flies internationally a lot for work and lost his huge case over in an African country in March 2020 enroute back to the US. We moved since then to another state and 2 more addresses, sure enough in May 2023 (yes, this year!) we had a UPS truck deliver the bag. It was so fun to open because he couldn’t remember what was in it. We tossed the toiletries as they were bad and expired, some stuff we kept, and we realized his pants didn’t fit him anymore. There were pictures of our kids and a few other personal things of value still in it. Nothing was missing that he could remember, it was all just super dusty, an hot mess, and expired. I wish we could have tracked it, the bag looked like it had a crazy trip. It was like a time capsule and we had a lot of laughs. We really thought it was lost for good after month 2 of it missing.

My one piece of lost luggage was delivered to me the day after returning home. Fortunately, we were on our way home when it was lost so I never really missed it once we filed the paperwork to get it back.

My one piece of lost luggage went to Canada while I went to Seattle. It was returned to me a few days after returning home…but I did have to buy a lot of replacement clothes and toiletries during my trip, so it ended up being a bit costly.

Mavis, I’m with you regarding those yummy looking tomatoes! Received Baker creek catalog yesterday & I’m dreaming of spring!

I was flying from Alaska to the east coast to see Grandma, with a securely wrapped bag of moose steaks. The suitcase did not make it for over a month. It was delivered to Grandma, whose home I had left 2 weeks before, complete with rotting moose meat inside. Thrifty Grandma tried to insist she could still cook up and eat the meat, so I sent over my uncle to get the bag and throw away the entire contents. The stench of rotting meat would never have left my clothes. (Even if it had, I would be convinced it had not…)

Good luck with galaxy tomatoes. I got my catalogue and tried to place an order THE DAY I GOT THE CATALOGUE and they are sold out.

I’ve had luggage get rerouted for several days, but nothing’s ever gone missing permanently (or for years at a time). Knock. On. Wood!
I place an 8-1/2 x ll” sheet of brightly colored paper–with our first names, cell phone numbers, and email addresses printed on them–in a clear plastic sleeve and put it in a zippered part of the suitcase. So it can’t fall out out if the suitcase bursts open accidentally.
That way, if the tag comes off, there is still easily-spotted identifying info inside the luggage.

Mavis-Your writing about losing luggage reminds me of a mantra that I try to follow. There are three categories of luggage: Lost, Damaged, and Carry-on!

I love Unclaimed Baggage in Scotsboro, AL. I would feel violated if someone touched my things. I have gotten some good deals there.

I’ve also visited Unclaimed Baggage. Lots of stuff to look at! I enjoyed it. But, I like going to estate sales. I love to ‘plunder’ as my Memaw called it!
