Confession time:
I have not left the house since saturday. Well, I mean in my car. I have taken Lucy for a few walks but that’s it. It’s the strangest thing. I have absoultly NO desire to go anywhere. Not even to mail a package {Monkey Boy can do that for me} or to get a Venti London Fog with my Starbucks card {thank you birthday fairy}.
I’ve even been sleeping in too. π So ya. Sorry for those daily deal posts getting up after 6 am a few times this week. I mean really, what’s going on? Does this mean I am content? Is that what this is? Or have I just gotten a little lazy?
I’ve got my people, my dog, my chickens, my rug hooking, the internet and the garden. There is food in my pantry and last night I made soup in the crock pot. The HH was puzzled by the giant {Lima} beans in the soup and mentioned he noticed my car hadn’t moved in a few days and was that why I was serving giant beans in the soup? Is that all we have left to eat in the pantry?
I couldn’t stop laughing.
Lucy. She is in LOVE with her babies.
Obsessed really. She supervises as I take them out to the chicken run every morning and then stays by the coop for a good 20 minutes making sure they are settled in okay.
The ladies of Grantham were sleeping in the laundry room at night {the heating lamp is too big to put in the coop and they still need the warmth} but Lucy kept moaning because she couldn’t see them all the time and so now the girls are stationed at the back door at night so Lucy can keep an eye on them. She’s such a funny dog. I’ve even woken up in the middle of the night and found her next to the tub with her babies.
It’s seriously the sweetest thing ever.
Our 3 pear espalier trees are finally producing leaves…
And it looks like the second planting of peas are going to make it. We had so much rain this winter/spring I was convinced they were just going to rot again… but so far so good.
And last but not least, while I was walking downtown with my mother a few weeks ago we popped into a flower shop so she could show me a vase she had had her eye on. I immediately spotted a glass jar with matches in it. 60 to be exact. Fascinated, I picked it up.
Although cute, who puts matches in a glass jar? Or rather, who would BUY matches in a glass jar? Surely they know that they are just paying for a label in a simple glass jar, right? I mean, it’s not like the matches in the glass jar work any better than the stick matches sold in a cardboard boxesΒ for a fraction of the cost.
Seriously. $16.00 for 60 matches in a glass jar. Clearly, I am missing something here.
What could it be??? Any idea?
Have a wonderful thursday everyone,
~Mavis

That soup looks amazing! And your husband’s comments! Too funny!
Those matches…wow. I guess when your matches are more of a display item than a necessary item, one would pay $16 for them? That is a little crazy. But I guess I don’t have matches on display so what do I know? π

I think you must be content and that is the reason you don’t want to go anywhere (in your car). Seriously is there anybody who would pay $16 for those matches??? How much was the vase????

It didn’t have a price tag on it. It was so hilarious, another customer came in so we didn’t even bother asking after looking at the jars of matches.

I diy matches in mason jelly jars with the striker part put on the lid, we have a pellet stove and my hubby and son distroy the box in no time, I also have some in out trailer but would not pay for one ha ha . My dog when I got meat birds (50) he would lay in the house with them for the first few days, they jumped and climbed all over him, then he would lay outside their pen until they got bigger and didn’t need to be babysat .

Those must be the company matches…..they are much to fancy for family use. When I was growing up there were many things around the house that were for company. I can still hear my mom’s voice saying, “Get the guest towels put up in the bathroom!”

I think that’s one item of evidence for “Why Open-Plan Shelving Is So Expensive” – although, to be fair, those matches are also a ton longer than the little boxed matches are, so they’re not totally comparable. But if you want everything on your mantel to be pretty (while also having matches near your fireplace), or trying to have all the toiletries in your bathroom look “magazine-ready” on their shelves, then things get a bit pricier or at least a bit more of a pain (as you transfer goopy lotion and such from the store bottles to your fancy bottles or as you try to hunt up the right size of jar or “attractive” box for matches).
The dust accumulation from open-plan shelving also drives me nuts, but for me the biggest thing is not being able to just *use* the storage space without thinking about how packaging clashes and whether the space looks too crowded…

I understand your enjoyment of just being at home. I have 3 days a week that I can be at home and I love it. BUT…..then I decided to teach my great granddaughter how to sew. I saw those cute pot holders that your friend Zoe makes and I became posessed! I have now made 16 pot holders and have fabric for more! I’m evidently getting an early start on Christmas because I don’t need that many for sure!
Karin Carson says
That is fantastic that you are passing on your sewing skills, it is always nice to get a jump on Christmas gifts, i have 1/2 of mine >

Matches in a jar. New Christmas gift idea (home-made, of course, with the striker strip on the lid). Thanks!

I’m so glad that Lucy has babies again. I believe my beagle would do pretty much the same thing. She was raised with kittens and loves cats.
I was raised in the country and live in the country now in the house that my Daddy helped his Daddy build. I don’t have to try to get the country look because we live it everyday. LOL We buy the wood matches in the big box and leave them near the wood burning stove where they will be used. I think that jar of matches might be a nice idea to borrow for gifts but no way in this lifetime would I pay that much for a mason jar, some matches and a label. I am cheap and I know it but I’m also not stupid. LOL

Wow! I need to make some of these and sell them. LOL. These are good to have for camping and damp weather. Or if the world as we know it quits.

I’ve gotta know how you got the HOA to let you have chickens!
Our HOA is pretty lenient about most things, but total are total bulls about letting us have chickens. (Our HOA leader has bees and it clearly says we can’t have them in our HOA covenants, ugh!)
We haven’t pushed it since they live on our street and we want to stay neighborly. One day I will live on a chunk of land with no one bugging me or telling me what to do…

At least with matches in a jar you don’t have to worry about mice or other critters chewing them and possibly starting a spark or two. They also would stay dry. Long matches are nice for lighting thinks like the water heater or fireplace. But a small fortune for them? Looks like a classic case of The Matchstick Girl who couldn’t sell any because nobody needed them.

The crockpot with soup you made today looks delicious, could you post the recipe for this soup please.
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Catherine,
I didn’t follow a recipe for this soup. It was simply a bit of leftover pot roast {from the freezer} 1 pound of bulk bean mix {Bob’s Red Mill sells a similar mix} and a half of bottle of Bruschetta Mix my mother gave us last summer. It was totally random. π

Mavis- Join my Recluse Club! I love love LOVE to stay home for days. I am a housewife and unless I HAVE to go somewhere, I am just happy as a clam to stay home, clean, ride my recumbent bike, read, cook, crochet, coast around on the web. I’m glad I’m not the only one out here who feels this way!
I would never pay 16 bucks for matches ,gawwwwhhh……

Remember when there were free books of matches at every check out stand and restaurant. When my mom got married and my sister got lavaliered in college, mom ordered books of matches that said Margaret and Ingle, the perfect match. For sis she ordered Marilyn and Mike, tho they never married. She also had a modest wedding shower right after the depression. People brought a tin of spice and a recipe that used it.
