bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
You know you’re getting old when you see stuff like this. 2000? Seriously?
These are my people. A bean supper AND pie? Are you serious?
I don’t drink wine, but I wonder how many people sell their corks as a side gig?
I’ve noticed a lot of people from Maine sell rocks and driftwood on Esty. At first I thought it was a little weird, but then I chalked it up to people will buy anything.
And now that includes me apparently. 🙂 I found this mama and daddy bird with their two babies in a local shop and I just had to have it. ROCKS. I PAID GOOD MONEY FOR ROCKS. What is going on? Supporting local artists is one thing, but rocks?
A few days later we spotted these beauties in a small specialty food store. Isn’t the snowman just the sweetest thing you ever saw? I guess I was looking at Frosty a little too long because the HH pulled me away and told me to go find some rocks and make my own. Husbands. They just don’t get it.
And last but not least, I saw this ad in an old magazine and noticed something probably only I would notice in an ad for Mother’s Day flowers. Look at the little girl’s eyebrows. So nice and natural. And now look at the mom’s eyebrows, she’s missing quite a few and has basically painted hers on. And then Granny’s eyebrows. Her eyebrows are barely there and she has decided that at her age, to just let them go. And good for her!
The ad doesn’t make me want to buy flowers. It makes me stop and ponder at exactly what stage in the eyebrow phase I am in, and at what stage I too will lay down the eyebrow pencil for good and just not give a flip anymore.
60. 60 seems like a good number to me. What do you think?
Peace Out Girl Scouts. Do try and stay out of trouble.

Re: eyebrows: I’m 50. About five years I decided to go for instant, natural rejuvenation by cutting myself some bangs. Bye bye, forehead lines and thinning eyebrows. 😉
Mavis Butterfield says
Maybe it’s time I get some bangs too. I’ve been thinking about it for a while.
Laura says
This is what I did a few years ago too (I’m 56) after my kids kept looking at my lack of eyebrows with horror. Bangs completely eliminate this issue, lol.
Shari says
100% want ALL those rock pictures!
Deborah says
About the eyebrows, I’m 68, and mine are white (I’ve always been a blond of some color, naturally). Mine are kinda sparse. I’ve never plucked them or anything. Occasionally, I’ll use the eyebrow pencil, but not consistently. I’m just a natural girl. Don’t wear make up much either.

We live near a river, and I collect river glass and pebbles like that for similar collages (I’ve made a river glass moose, kingfisher, otter, etc.) and also other crafts. I buy clear, hollow pens and fill them with tiny bits of river glass as graduation gifts for my students so they can take a piece of this place with them.
Sue R. says
Mel–I’d love to put some small sea glass into a clear pen. Where do you buy something like that? Thanks!
Mel says
They’re hard to find, but I’ve had good luck with Etsy in the past.
Margo says
64 and just tried some eyebrow pencil thingy. Haahahah…..looked so funny. Nope…just gonna live with the thinning grayish eyebrows. At least my family recognizes me that way.
Jennifer says
63 and not giving up eyebrows. Mine have always been practically non-existent and so a few years ago I got permanent make-up i.e. had them tatooed on. Need to get them re-inked but have loved it.
Sue says
Give me rocks, twigs, drift wood and I’m happy. Best of all it’s free, nature at her best.
Some eyebrows are to me way over done, as a grey haired person now I use just a little color to pencil in for shape.
Thank you for the quick delivery on my order. Had ordered the candy canes last year,
Needed more to share, love the stockings and I will tie on gifts. My favorite has to be the bees , so cute.
Deanna Allen says
I had a thyroid condition that caused my hair to thin and my eyebrows to fall out.. they never grew back 🙁 I were glasses so most ppl don’t notice
Lynne says
I’m 67 and eyebrows are the only place I wear makeup most days. I overplucked a bit in my youth so they are kind of sparse but my hair is dark. With light or grey hair, sparse eyebrows don’t stand out so much against your skin, but with dark brown hair, it’s obvious. I always have an eyebrow pencil handy. Bangs are such a temptation, but I had some traumatizing experiences with bangs as a kid and I just can’t seem to make the leap.
Love the rock pictures! I totally see why you wanted one.
Peg says
I’ll be 60 in March. Makeup just isn’t my thing, nor are eyebrows apparently. I wouldn’t mind having some tattooed on, but they all look fake to me. At least I know the ones I have are 100% natural.
Ann says
You may want to check into microblading. It’s a significant improvement over tattooed brows.
Jules says
Those rock pictures are super cute! But my problem when seeing handmade things is I tell myself I could make that for less than buying it…and then I never do.
Tracy says
Make up makes me break out so I don’t use it. But I have always been lucky to have thick eyebrows. I think it looks silly when these young girls pluck out (or shave, do they shave them off?) and then paint on an exaggerated eyebrow. Sometimes in a weird color that doesn’t match their hair.
Rosaleen says
Selling rocks, etc: Do you know that toilet paper rolls can be purchased?
Eyebrows: At nearly 70, mine are sparse and a mix of coarse wild white and medium brown. Bangs camouflage but not enough. I had tattooed eyebrows and liner done a few years ago and every few weeks dye my lashes and brows to cover the white ones. Most days I just slap a little moisturizer onto my face. What a time saver. and no “raccoon eyes!”
Jennifer says
I tried to double click on the bird family picture, so that should tell you I approved of the purchase!! Also made me think – why didn’t I think of that?!?
Lisa says
One of my favorite jokes…
“I told my wife she had drawn
her eyebrows on a little too high. She looked surprised.”
I’m 54 years young and decided to let nature take its course with the eyebrows. They’re no longer the first thing I notice when I look in the mirror 🙂
Linda Practical Parsimony says
I wear glasses and have bangs and a thyroid condition have made my eyebrows sparse and I have dark hair. I use an eyebrow pencil sparingly. That way, the lack is not so obvious, yet I do not look weird with drawn-on eyebrows.
Jenny Young says
I’m 56 with bushy Brooke Shield eyebrows….or maybe Duck Dynasty eyebrows! I actually did nothing to them until sometime in my 40’s when I had friends who made me feel self-conscious about them. I started trimming them up some but I never tweaked/waxed or anything.
I do still trim them to keep them from looking cave-man but I do little beyond that & running a brow brush through them when I dress up. Ha! I have never dyed my hair either so I guess for the most part….I have never cared a flip.
Lolly says
Hmmm, I just assumed that brows thinned because women over-plucked them (hello mom).
I tweeze between my brows and a couple odd ones under, and then every few wks I brush them straight up and trim them….because they are crazy if I don’t. But I’ve never followed brow trends. Mine are thick and healthy and still dark (as is my hair….must come from my grandma!!). I don’t color them in any, nor do I pluck them into any shapes.
(I’m mid 40’s. One grandma gave me dark hair with very few greys, the other gave me beautiful skin that makes me look much younger! I hit the ageing jackpot, lol! Now….if only they had left me with a good metabolism, and I was the size I was as a teen, lol!)
My teen daughter plucks her brows. Honestly, she reminds me of my mom’s generation, lol. I don’t say anything. But I prefer how pretty they were when they were full.
Brianna says
I have been waxing my brows since I was 19 and that is the most beauty I do to them. I don’t have time to tweeze or anything and I feel when they start growing out people notice, but nobody has ever said anything to me. I have 2 different colored eyes, so most of the time I just want to believe they are staring at my eyes and not my eyebrows. I had a boy in school back in the day make a comment to me and 20+ years later I am still sensitive to it, kind of crazy how a single comment can change my perspective about my eyebrows.
Mable says
The question is why do you care now what your eyebrows look like or how you might be judged for them? if you are going to stop at 60, why not just stop now?
Tracy says
Aw, don’t be so hard on yourself, Mavis. You didn’t just buy a picture made of rocks. Why, there is clearly a stick in there too!
And for the record, bangs on women over about 35 just look dorky. Like they’ve completely given up. Don’t do it.
Karen says
When younger I did pluck my eyebrows but later developed a thyroid problem and the end/ back half of each eyebrow is basically missing or very sparse. About 3 months ago I found a newer type of brow pencil…..not the red mabeline pencils of the past and have been brushing in a bit longer eyebrow and I am loving it and how I look. I continue to practice and do it sparingly but it makes me feel so much better. I think that is good for me……. improved self esteem. I’m not one to be into makeup or clothing but this is good for me.
Laura says
I have a thyroid condition that has cost me my brows as well and would LOVE to know what you have found that you feel works well. I have tried many options and most don’t do the job. TIA!
Karen says
I bought the pencil from QVC from the Kim Gravel line. I got the soft brown. It goes on nice, but I did have to practice to get the arch correct. I think that she has a little video on face book on how to measure and use it. Little strokes and not drawing it on makes my brow look really nice. There are many different products out there now. My niece uses something totally different to make a really full brow. I use the Gravel pencils to just extend my brow and keep it the same width as what I have and to fill in where there are just a few hairs. Good luck. Just practice and use finger or powder to smudge a bit to blend in
Patti says
I’ll be 59 in a couple of months. I’m not a slave to my eyebrows, but I do use one of those little mascara like gels. I want them to look natural, so it’s the same color as most of my brow and it helps keep them from going too wonky. It doesn’t help that I can’t see well anymore to maintain them. Of course, then I can’t see what a mess they are either.
DebbieB says
My mom passed away last year and for the last 2 years of her life lived in an assisted living facility. When I packed up her things I found her little makeup bag with her eyebrow pencil in her purse. She didn’t use any other makeup anymore, only chapstick, but she wouldn’t go anywhere without doing her brows and she was 91.
Wendy Steele says
That is so sweet, Debbie, what a wonderful story!
Betsy in MN says
Ha! I visited Maine last spring and brought home rocks! They are on display in a little bowl on my dining room table. 🙂
E in Upstate NY says
Maine rocks currently are on the top of a radiator thanks to one son [collector of said rocks] and other son [who was married on the Main coast last September.]
Laura L. says
First of all, bangs are great at any age! I have blonde hair and blonde eyebrows so in order to see that I even have brows, I’ve always used pencil, but just enough to notice that they’re there. ☺ Personally, I think that eyebrows shape the entire face and especially the eyes.
