bits and bobs:Β A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
Monkey Boy gifted his sister the coveted 31 days of Starbucks {free} refills cup for Christmas. And yes, she went every.single.day. π
Her big splurge of the month? A like new sweatshirt from the Goodwill for $0.99!
All the tract homes and new construction going on around town. π
It makes my heart sink. Sidewalks and being within walking distance to the store is nice, but I don’t want to have to talk to 20 people just to get my mail. Or to wash my car, walk my dog, or to pull a weed in my front yard. I don’t want to look out my window and into the neighbor’s house {behind me, in front of me and on the sides}. No thank you.
Bono. He’s 5′ 6″. Did you know that? I had no idea.
Once we blow this popsicle stand…. I am totally going to design my new chicken coop around this outdoor seating area. Horse fencing, party lights, an arbor and wisteria. It’s not only functional, but gorgeous.
When I was cooking with Mrs. HB the other day she pulled some homegrown peppers out of her freezer to use. How clever is this?!Β Especially if you grow a bunch of varieties of peppers and you want to remember what they are.
She said she washes the plant tag really well and then just seals it up with the peppers with her FoodSaver.
You learn something new everyday. π
Have a great Tuesday everyone,

Has The Girl done her Whole30 yet? I did one last spring and I need to do a second (gained 10 pounds over winter – holy cupcakes!). I’d love to know her progress.
Also, I live in an old neighborhood where the houses are small and charming but we are right on top of each other. My front yard looks about double what is pictured in those tract homes. My house has built in 1928 and all the others are within a few years of that. Out of 4 properties that line mine I only have issues with 1 neighbor. And really he just has issues with my dog who loves to bark at squirrels and people passing by. I too, do not enjoy a barking dog but I don’t send nasty texts about it. I have a vegetable garden in my front yard (only place where the sun shines) and only a handful of people will stop and say “looks great!” a year and I hand them a zucchini! LOL I am an introvert so having privacy is a big thing for me. If I don’t want to talk to my neighbors I wear headphones and a head nod or wave usually suffices. My house is two blocks from a mom and pop grocery store and 4 really great restaurants. I love my neighborhood so putting up with those small annoyances is doable! Plus we have no HOA fees and my best friend lives two streets down.
I am building a privacy fence this spring (to help with the barking dog) and plan on giving my chickens a better looking run. Right now they are in a 10×10 dog pen. The cattle panels would look awesome as a chicken run!

I also live in a small neighborhood development. It’s tolerable since I’m on the last road but just recently found out that they are building a 400 house project behind me! We’ve been in our home for 7 years and much loved added which consists of customizing the inside and outside – a large garden, lots of fruit trees, landscaping, etc. I love my home but now we are confused on what to do. Stay in the large community and build a privacy dome (ha!) or move and start over where there is more breathing space (and costs more). π

This is why I live on 5 acres now!

Oh wow on the peppers. Question – Are the peppers mushy when they thaw out or are they normal?
Anita Burns says
I freeze our pepper excess, too. I seed, cut off the stems, and slice them into instantly usable pieces. Then I cook them while still frozen. In a cooked dish, you cannot tell they weren’t fresh from the garden. Some peppers will soften more than others if thawed first but most stay pretty firm although not like fresh.
Pat Meadows says
I suppose it depends on your idea of mushy. They certainly lose the crispness of a good fresh pepper: they are soft, I’d say, but not mushy.
Frozen foods stay in considerably better condition if you have a MANUAL DEFROST freezer. We do. We just bought a new one (our old one died after 20 years of good service – it got irretrievably warped when moving). They are still available, but evidently no longer popular. I don’t mean the freezer that’s part of a fridge – I can remember when fridges were all manual defrost, and in that case I love, love, love auto defrost. But for a stand-alone freezer, manual defrost is the way to go, IMHO. We defrost ours twice a year; that’s all, and it’s not a big deal to do. You know, the quality of the freezer bags you use also matters: don’t use storage bags instead. They must be marked ‘freezer bags’. And I think that name brands (Glad and Zip-Loc) are most definitely better than store brands. I dislike the Wal-Mart ‘Great Value’freezer bags, for instance.

I like the term “Bits and Bobs”. Once, when my parents were at my house, we had a lot of leftovers from previous meals, and I set it all out and said we were having a “Bits and Bobs lunch”. My parents nor husband had ever heard that term! π
Teckla says
Your Bits and Bobs lunch is what is known as an “Ort” meal here. Chuckle. But I love the term, “bits and bobs!” Now I’ll have to start using it.
Tamara says
I grew up hearing and using the phrase “bits and bobs”, but not in reference to food. Leftovers were called “scraps” or “pieces”. No meal was any better than my grandma’s “scraps”!

I stood half a meter from Bono at a concert, I am 5’5” and he seemed to be similar height to me.
