bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
If you’re like me and your eyelashes and eyebrows seem to be thinning at an alarming rate and you’ve pretty much come to the conclusion you’ll look like one of those sad hairless cats by the time you hit 60, have I got a product for you!!
Maybelline The Falsies Surreal Extensions Washable Mascara. This tube of $9.95 magical goodness really does make you look like you have the eyelashes of a teenager. All you need is one swipe with the wand for a natural look. It’s AWESOME!
A total game changer. I love it and have been wearing it everyday since I received a tube for Christmas.
I was watching Bridget Jones’s Diary for the 10 millionth time yesterday and for the very first time noticed the scale she was using in one of the beginning scenes.
9 3⁄4 stones. She weighs 9 3⁄4 stones!!! I want a scale that measures your weight in stones. I’m putting one of these in my carry on the next time I go to Great Britain.
Fact 1 stone = 14 pounds.
Speaking of Great Britain… My new favorite property in Port Isaac – Rubeba Cottage. I love the white walls and coastal blues… Navy colored cabinets. What do you think of those? I LOVE them!
And, in case you were wondering, Aunt Dora’s Cottage is still available.
I recently read an article on BBC about the safety of hot air balloons. Have you ever or would you ever go for a ride in a hot air balloon? Umm… Fire and a basket in the sky? What could possibly go wrong!? No thanks.
I am happy here inside all cozy and warm watching the snow fall {again}.
Here’s to a wonderful day,
~Mavis

Greatly appreciate the tip on the mascara as I want to try something new and had no idea what to buy- thanks!
Any recommendations on shampoos/conditioners/products for fine, straight hair that is thinning at the top front of my forehead and part lines to encourage new growth and keep what is there healthy? I recently stopped pulling my hair into elastics everyday and now use soft fabric scrunchies when I need to put my hair up while cooking, etc.
Mavis Butterfield says
I don’t have any tips for shampoo for thinning hair, but hopefully someone will hop on and share.

J in OH-IO – a friend of mine has seen good results with Bolster Beauty – she swears by their stuff now.
Hope that helps!

I have a funny story about body weight in stones. My best friend lives in the U.K. She is an American married to a guy from Wales. When she had her first child, they told her the babies weight in stones. It was (point something). She yelled, would someone please just tell me how much my baby weights in pounds.
Aunt Diane from Streator says
That’s hysterical!

I gave up on mascara decades ago because inevitably, I will rub my eyes at some point during the day and end up looking like a racoon. I can manage eyebrow pencil and a little eyeliner pencil, and not make a mess, so I stick with that.
I did go on a hot air balloon ride once and it was lots of fun. I was in Cappadocia, Turkey and it’s the best way to see the fairy chimney landscape. The very early flights ensured that the air was calm, and it was the most peaceful feeling. The balloon drifts up; you don’t feel when you become airborne. The guys who fly those things have pinpoint control. We bobbed up and down among the chimneys, and when it was time to land, they put the basket right down on the bed of the truck that was to drive it away. I scheduled an afternoon flight here in the States once, but the wind was too strong and it was canceled. Safety does play a big part in the process.

Now I need to do a search for “fairy chimneys in Turkey” … have never heard of such a thing!

When I saw the pic of the mascara, I was absolutely sure that you were going to make some snarky eyerolling comment about “what some women will do…” WRONG! You’re really not kidding! (Are you?) I also have lamented my vanished eyelashes. Maybe I should give it a try…
Mavis Butterfield says
It was a gift… So even better! Ha. It really does work though, I was surprised. Kinda makes me want to buy a sequined tube top and some roller skates now. And a bottle of hairspray.
suzanne says
No worries Mavis. Once the hair thins on eyebrows and lashes it makes up for it by increasing on the face. Poor Bridget was considered chubby at 136.5 lbs or close. That is pretty sad.

Oh Mavis I had to laugh at myself. I saw the picture of your ironing and thought why is she doing her ironing outside in the cold.
I amuse myself.

I thought the EXACT SAME- did a double take on that picture- Haha!

Yes, I went up in a hot air balloon years ago when we lived in Albuquerque, NM. Our friend took us up in his balloon at the Balloon Fiesta. I was a little nervous about it, but survived the experience and the view of Albuquerque was spectacular. I do remember being weirded out about the sheet of plywood we stood on in the bottom of the large woven basket – just seemed flimsy when we were so far up in the air.
Thanks for the mascara recommendation. I already added it to my Amazon cart!

We live in Albuquerque NM, home of the Balloon Fiesta every October. Over 550 hot air balloons come from all over the world and it is a kaleidoscope of colors in the sky. It’s breathtaking.
I’m in my 50’s and have noticed thinning hair as well. I have a protein shake every day and add collagen to help with hair growth.
I also use caster oil on my eyelashes and eyebrows. It’s also a great moisturizer. I use tube mascara as well and it’s awesome.
Good luck.
Richelle says
Tube mascara was a game changer for me. No smearing or flaking. I’ve been using the brand “Blinc” (ordered through Amazon).
Richelle says
And I’ve been hot air ballooning and thought it was a great experience.
CynScotland says
I have been hot air ballooning three times. Once in So Cal, once in Washington and the last time on the Serengeti in Africa. Cappadocia is on my list. I’ve been to Turkey 3 times but haven’t made it to Cappadocia yet.
I use LaLash and LaBrow on my lashes and brows. They really help with growth. I buy it online from the company as it’s cheaper than salons.

When I saw your pic of the Maybelline Falsies mascara, I gasped! I just received it via Amazon yesterday. I had a great mascara but (of course) it was discontinued, so I searched for a new one & saw this one had great reviews. Trying it tomorrow for the first time. Hope it’s as wonderful as it’s been for you!

I will try that mascara as I have the same problem. Hot air ballooning I have done quite a few times and it is wonderful, Colorado and California is where I did it, I also went skydiving on my 40th birthday but that was 28 years ago. LOL
Molly says
Hot Air Ballooning – FABULOUS!!
Did it in Sedona Arizona. Lots of fun. Definitely a memory maker

I put the mascara on my shopping list. I’ve been looking around for a product for a while, but hadn’t yet made a decision….I guess I just don’t trust their claims. I want to want to ride in a hot air balloon; they are very popular here in my corner of Missouri, and I find them beautiful and romantic. But my palms sweat if I get on a step ladder, so it’s better for all involved if I stay on the ground.
Barbara says
I am excited to add the mascara to my shopping list so I can quit spending money on products that don’t work. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for thinning eyebrows. I am not a big makeup person but my sister-in-law has started drawing on her eyebrows and I hope someone has a better solution. With my pale complexion and hair, I hope to find something a bit more natural looking.
Annette says
I’m also looking for a product for thinning brows. Had anyone tried something called Gimme Me Brow?
Allison says
In my 60’s my hair completely greyed; my eyelashes thinned and started to lighten, and got amusingly wirey/curley. I ‘ve never found any mascare that didn’t make my eyes itch, so I felt like I was disappearing. Brows really are important to frame eyes, so I started using castor oil on them, with some success, and found a Cover Girl brow pencil called Perfect Blend, in charcoal, which I love. I find my color choices in clothes have changed as a result: much cooler, lots of black and white and bright accessories. Change is the only constant and I’m trying to embrace it. And thanks, will try the mascara.

Dear Mavis, only you could make ironing look romantic and appealing!
