bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
If I win the lotto… I’m doing this.
If you’ve got 3 minutes, read this. And then tell me your favorite. There were so many good ones, but I think #72 was my favorite. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to work it into a rug design. {Note: The list was originally written in 1958.}
My husband wants me to tell you that Costco is bringing back the chopped onion dispenser to their food court.
We don’t have a Costco nearby {yet} but he deemed this information VERY important for all of those who buy the $1.50 hotdog and a soda combo {which, even I have to admit is a heck of a deal}.
I spotted 20# bags of carrots at the hardware store the other day and almost bought one. Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t because apparently “horse carrots” which are basically just overgrown carrots, are pretty tasteless. I had no idea.
Speaking of vegetables… If you are a fan of the Maine farmers and writers Eliot Coleman & Barbara Damrosch, you can now stay at an airbnb on their Four Seasons Farm. How cool is that!!!
Looking for a fun {and creative!} gift to give a graduate this year? How about a money lei? I made these for my kids when they graduated and they are still a popular gift today. Go HERE for a quick tutorial {with lots of pictures}.
And last but not least…
Have you ever cooked a beautiful and perfectly seasoned meal only to have the person across from you add salt and pepper to it WITHOUT TASTING THEIR FOOD FIRST!? Does this drive you bonkers?
My husband has been doing this our entire marriage at home and while eating out. It makes me crazy. Taste the food first. Then add extra salt and pepper if you must. But c’mon, at least try it first.
That’s it. That’s all I’ve got.
Here’s to a beautiful weekend,
~Mavis

Ugh! My hubby not only puts salt and pepper on first but usually turmeric and or hot sauce! No matter what I make…….
jess says
I have an 18 year old son who pretty much douses anything with hot sauce before he picks up the fork…
Elle says
#72 it is as the rest of this list irritates the crap out of me. Why can’t people be themselves. I wouldn’t want to marry a fake and find out.
Kelly-Jo says
I felt the same way when reading the list. If I had to do just about any of those to get a man, I’d remain single forever!
Elaine says
My husband will be THRILLED to know that Costco is bringing back the chopped onions!!!!
Meg C says
I couldn’t narrow it down to just 3 so here are my “favorites”:
2, 30, 56, 80, 105, 125
I’m planting my dahlia collection this afternoon; here’s hoping all goes well!
Rosemary says
My hubby adds the salt and pepper before tasting also AND he will also add worcestershire sauce BEFORE tasting. That drives me crazy . . .
Jennifer says
I took salt and pepper off the table years ago. Out of sight, out of mind.
Susan says
My SIL salts everything prior to tasting. I’m thankful my husband doesn’t.
That list is horrible but has one unintentionally good nugget: (3) Advocating STEM classes before ‘STEM’ existed! I got a good laugh at (31). My husband didn’t stumble but he stepped on my foot when we met.
Mel says
Well, at least you know what to get your HH for Christmas:

For the life of me, I don’t know why they’re so expensive though! Yikes.
Brenda Landru says
Hi I was wondering if you would know the make or brand of The Duck Ladys Greenhouse?
Jennifer G says
My dad salted and peppered everything. Drove me nuts. My husband puts hot sauce on everything. But never at a restaurant unless it’s eggs or Meccan food. I’d take it personally, but I’m a darn good cook. Just a bad habit I think.
Margo says
I read the list. Wow! All I can say is, thank God things have changed! I know we have lots of newer bad ideas, but those aren’t something I’d teach my daughter today!
Kath says
At first I thought the list screamed of desperation but then I remembered where women’s rights were in 1958. You were pretty much expected to get married and be a homemaker and baby machine. Nothing against those who choose that life, but in 1958 it pretty much wasn’t a choice.
Kathy says
#129 on the list – Don’t marry him if he has too many loose buttons……….mine had A LOT of loose buttons, still does. 30 yrs and counting! Ohhh wait, they meant on his clothes……:P
Margery says
My husband is the same with the salt and pepper, please just taste it first.
I liked number 93, 99, 79 all things I did. The poor man was engaged 5 times before me, and now we have been together for over 30 years 🙂
Cheryl says
What is that delicious looking food without me knowing what it is? I’m thinking canned chicken casserole?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, tuna casserole. 🙂 https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/the-best-tuna-casserole-recipe/
Cheryl says
Thank you
Sue S. says
But what is that delicious looking plateful of yummy that is being over-seasoned? Is it tuna noodle casserole? Please do tell. Sue

Yes, tuna casserole. 🙂 https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/the-best-tuna-casserole-recipe/
Dianne says
Yep, my husband does the same thing! I gave up long ago. Let him salt and pepper his food. He has to eat it either way. Or starve.
The list is real and pretty said. You go to college only to find a man and get a degree in teaching, no men in all-girls nursing school then, if you wanted to be a male nurse you went into the military, or you married your HS boyfriend.
Lana says
I just need my packets of sauerkraut for my $1.38 hot dog deal at Sam’s. It would horrible to find they had done away with those!
Cindy Brick says
*They missed one on the list, so I’m adding it:
#130: Let a strange man sit at your table in a restaurant, if he asks to.
That’s how I met the Brick — been married 41 1/2 years now.
*I wish Sam’s would add onion back again! But they do have those great packets of sauerkraut…
*Really? The salt and pepper thing bothers you? I grew up just assuming that would happen. (Though the salting of watermelon and muskmelon freaked me out a little…)
*Thank you so much, Mavis, for mentioning the seed sale at Botanical… I saved a lot of money!
Tammy says
My husband has always salted and peppered everything before tasting a single bite. According to him, it would be rude to taste it and then add salt and pepper. LOL
Lindsey says
Like Nevada, Alaska historically has had many more men than women and was considered a good place to find a husband. But as the saying goes, “The odds are good, but the goods are odd.”
Mavis Butterfield says
Ha! I love it. 🙂
Nancy says
What about when you put the meal on the table, go back to get something and someone has added salt to the serving dish without even tasting the meal? It happened once, meal was inedible. “Someone” learned his lesson.
amy says
I’m an under-salter (because people can always add more). Some people know they need to salt before they even taste my cooking and I’m OK with that.
Sue S. says
Sounds like me. I don’t actually use salt. Sue
Angela W says
I fully support #35. Either way, I would feel independent.
Thank you Mavis for mentioning the sale at Botanical. I ordered the 6 in 1 planters and seeds! Huge savings, along with their 10% discount for email sign up!
Sue says
My hubby does the same so now I don’t add any salt when cooking. I mean all that salt isn’t good for him.
Mrs. M. says
I wasn’t desperate or even trying to get married and did ALL these items on dates:
32 ,45, 67, 70, 71, 72, 73, 82, 84, 89, 100, 101, 103, 112.
Will be married 29 years in July, and the list should have read…
1. Be yourself, unless your whiney or needy. If so, straighten up before you even think about getting married.

Salt and Pepper,
Most restaurants these days season the dishes very lightly due to fact the 70% of America has high blood pressure. The body needs a small amount of sodium to function, but most Americans consume too much sodium. High sodium consumption can raise blood pressure, and high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Most of the sodium we consume is in the form of salt. The need to add salt and pepper is ones own preference now.
I may not add salt but I always add pepper. Even when cooking at home I season sparingly on the salt. My husband and I usually add salt and pepper most of the time before tasting with the exceptions of some packaged/canned foods.
Even the great chefs while making a dish will season more than once some dishes you add salt at the end before serving.
