bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things
According to The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird, this is the easiest way to french braid hair. Silly me, I’ve always braided my hair standing up.
But the kid can parallel park like nobody’s business, so I don’t question her methods {parking, braiding hair or otherwise}.
I had no idea awesomness could be bottled.
But it will cost you something fierce.
Mr. HB is trying to talk me into getting the Go Pro Karma Grip. Says it’s the coolest camera ever. He made a video of me and Mrs. HB in her garden talking it up but then when he went to play it back the video wouldn’t upload to his phone. Go figure. I think I’ll stick to my Canon Rebel and the camera on my phone. 😉
Thanks to Carol in New Hampshire I now have 3 new places to visit on my next trip:
- The Portsmouth Athenaeum – A wicked cool 200 year old reading room {the second oldest in the country}
- Harvey’s Bakery and Coffee Shop in Dover, NH
- Sweet Caroline’s Thrift Store in Rye, NH
Locals… The know where you can find the good stuff! Thanks Carol.
And last but not least… Lady Sybil, she’s just about the sweetest bird I’ve ever met.
Have an AWESOME Wednesday everyone,
~Mavis

Hi Mavis, Good Morning Lucy,
I just wanted to make a comment on the thrift store prices without it getting lost in the fray. It may anger some people but here goes.
Goodwill and other large thrift stores are a business, a non-profit but still a business. They pay rent, overhead and insurance for their employees. They have free classes for non english speaking people and employ A LOT of folks that may not be ’employable’ by some other place. Job fairs, on the job training, lots and lots of helping people. I’ve seen first hand what good they do in the community. As far as the pricing goes, you have to know what is a ‘deal’ going in. I’ve found great deals and just bypass the others I know are not great deals. The people pricing that stuff may not know what it is or even what it’s called in English. Don’t be afraid to point out to the manager something that is way off the mark. If you take the time, in my experience they usually are very receptive to feedback.

They may have the ” spcost of doing business” to overcome but let’s remember that everything is donated!!! When something has an Everything For A Dollar sticker on it still and they have a price of $3 on it, there is something wrong. It is enough of a turnoff to stop you from visiting that store again.
Diane says
That should read the cost of doing business……

I could never French braid my hair because I would lose circulation in my arms. This is genius!

We just got back from London where we stumbled upon an amazing bakery. It’s near Cutty Sark/ National Maritime Museum. It’s Paul Rhodes Baker in Greenwich. http://paulrhodesbakery.co.uk/ The Rasperry Drizzle Meringue was the best thing I’ve ever eaten.

I have to know where the bottle of Awesomeness is from! I have a friend who’s going through some stuff and this is right up her alley and a perfect pick-me-up!!! Can you share the name of the store?!
Mavis Butterfield says
It was some random shop in Honolulu. I’m sure you could make one pretty easily though.

Lady Sybil has become such a big girl. Any eggs yet?
Mavis Butterfield says
No, not yet.

Thanks for the shout out, Mavis. Sending you the suggestions for where to visit on your next trip east, was the least I could do. YOU have helped me so much in so many ways, over the years. I am new at commenting here, but I have been reading your blog for many years. I found you when I lost my job back in 2010 and was looking for ways to live on unemployment and economize. I have enjoyed your recipes, your garden photos, your love of order in your home, your bartering, and everything else over the years. AND, I never even knew that there was an ALDI’S within driving distance of my house—but now I do and will make a little road trip soon—THANKS TO YOU!!!
